04 Feb 08 - 08:45 PM (#2253673) Subject: RE: Art Thieme Offline for a while From: GUEST,Art Thieme It was a good game. Fine defense for both really put heat on both quarterbacks all game long.---- I can't watch bad football being perpetrated, but the good stuff is great art---as was watching Michael Jordan all those years in Chicago----and also the Chicago White Sox entire season plus the superb playoffs and World Series a couple years back. Those examples personified team perfection to the extent it can be achieved. All that said, the Miami Dolphins team that went undefeated---Larry Czonka and cohorts---that was the most amazing football machine I've ever watched. Football is important to me probably because of the day in 1956 I blew out my ACL practicing with the Lakeview High team when I was fifteen years old. That lucky day kept me out o' Viet Nam. My surgeon was Sidney Sideman and he improvised the repair with a transplanted ligament. I was told it was the first time that repair had ever been done, although it's common now. He was also the father of my buddy, Mike Sideman, who I was with in 1962 in Cheyenne, Wyoming when we met elderly cowboy DEL BRAY in our hotel's bar. That was the night Del sang the song I eventually called "The Cowboy's Barbara Allen" on my first LP in 1976 or so. (Dr. Sid Sideman was also the doc for the Chicago Cardinals football team before they moved on to St. Louis.) ----- Good memories. In 1997 I had my right knee replaced---41 years later. 10 Feb 08 - 12:16 AM (#2258216) Subject: RE: Art Thieme Offline for a while From: Stilly River Sage Art plays an amazing array of things very well. He could have no voice at all and still had a great musical career. Instead, he has that marvelous voice and the great musical instrumental talent--what a combination! Sorry for gushing--I was listening to this CD of the 1980 interview again on my drive back from the concert in Arlington (Jed Marum--also very good!). Almost crying at the "Death of Robin Hood." I have been rearranging the musical section of my office since a few weeks ago when my sister mailed me a bunch of my father's books she had taken from his house after he died. I thought I'd never see them again, so have happily been moving stuff and putting the Child's English and Scottish Popular Ballads and several of his other large books in a place of honor. Along the way I've been revisiting a lot of the home-made and commercial CDs I have of various folks, many Mudcatters. And I have to do what Art is doing--move his music from cassettes to CD. SRS |

14 Feb 08 - 08:25 PM (#2262725) Subject: RE: Art Thieme Offline for a while From: Stilly River Sage Oh, and to answer your question Andrez, I'm tempted to put it in Star Trek terms: he is phasing in and out, kind of blinking at the Internet. I get the idea that he's using a loaner computer, so is logging on as a "guest" and doesn't pass by this way often. He'll be back up to full strength (and probably transporting all over the galaxy) when you see him log on as regular Art Thieme, not GUEST, Art Thieme. SRS |
15 Feb 08 - 12:07 AM (#2262808) Subject: RE: Art Thieme Offline for a while From: GUEST,Art Thieme Maggie, The problem with getting to the post office is that my wheel chair won't do ice. I can take a cab there but then the walkway leading to the ramp isn't shoveled. Nobody shovels their sidewalk these days. And even if they do, the next guy doesn't. You go as far as you can-----and then you can't. Carol did manage to get there with some packages today but won't be going until I have another pile of 'em to send because of arthritis. But yours went out today. Yes, like Kat said, I'm on line with a loaner computer while mine is being gone over. |
15 Feb 08 - 12:07 AM (#2262809) Subject: RE: Art Thieme Offline for a while From: katlaughing Art, I meant to clarify: the UPS guy because I ordered a bottle of that tincture & asked the company to ship it directly to you and the snail mail for the CD for your granddaughter! I hope you enjoy both! luvyakat |
15 Feb 08 - 02:10 AM (#2262830) Subject: RE: Art Thieme Offline for a while From: Stilly River Sage Too bad you can't winterize with studded snow tires on wheel chairs--but then you'd end up feeling like all of the timber beasts in logging country. All around town are businesses with nice wooden floors and signs at the door that say "caulks not allowed." When you tried to go back into your house you'd roll around and tear up the floors and carpets. I wonder if the UPS guys are under-dressed up there in the snow and ice? They seem to dress casually down here year-round. At the first hint of weather being above 50 they turn up in brown shorts. I'll look forward to your package, Art! Any hints as to the contents? SRS |

There's no question Art's depths are beyond the depths most people would think of going to. Re-reading some of this, I find: Dr. Sid Sideman was also the doc for the Chicago Cardinals football team before they moved on to St. Louis. Do we need an "intervention" over OUR ART patronizing a doctor who's patients all leave town after he's treated them? Actually, maybe we need to find a "curator" for him rather than a doctor. Does anyone know who's tending that kid named "Tut?" John |

24 Feb 08 - 01:27 PM (#2271080) Subject: RE: Art Thieme Offline for a while From: Charley Noble With regard to "squirrel wheels": 'Among the many models of the good society no one has urged the squirrel wheel'. "So Galbraith remarks, yet living in affluent societies closely resembles a life on the squirrel wheel. This is the first aspect of the problem confronting those who live in a comparatively rich society. It arises because our aspirations get focussed on increasing income just as we have more of it than our parents or grandparents could ever have dreamt of. No sooner do we have more, than we want more….and so the wheel turns one more time, we re-adjust our beady eyes and begin to ascend the ladder again….with predictable effect." There are also links to such apparatus, and no doubt with a little more research we could find a medieval wood block print. Need I press this case? Or does the fur still fly? And its not even that we would be lessened had you not started that brilliant and important Condom Thread, although we may have been. Actually what we do know is that you have so much great stuff to get filed and saved for future reference that we can't afford to trust the job to a worn out hamster ferchrissakes........... Think of it this way......Most of us support NPR and PBS in the hopes that our $$$ go to something WE want, like maybe traditional music, instead of another informative special on Ubangi tribesman which, although interesting, I could really give less than two craps about. So some of us decided that if we gave our support to ART instead of PBS we'd be a lot better off. Dang thing, it was in technicolour and you all were there and we was all cryin' and laughin' and slappin' each other on the back and the dream just kept weavin' in and out of my sleep. I'd get up for awhile, brush the cobwebs from my brain, lie back, then wake again to realise I'd been dreamin' it again! It was Groundhog's Day all over, but lots more fun! I spent the morning downloading updates of all the areas of the computer that needed that done. Mostly Symantec, but some HP too. This machine really is FAST. I slept great last night. Had a strange dream where two politicians were in a debate! (Where could that've come from?) One of 'em yelled, "That's ludicrous!" And the other responded, "No, it's you that's luttefisk!!" ----- And it went on from there... I told that to Kat on the phone today and I don't think she believed me. But that is accurate---just as it was dreamed. How the hell do you eat luttefisk anyhow? --- My spellcheck imploded on itself after that word confusticated it just now. I'll be getting word to as many of you conspirators as I can learn about having had something to do with this grand gift! 25 Feb 08 - 08:43 PM (#2272359) Subject: RE: Art Thieme Offline for a while From: Stilly River Sage Your spellcheck no doubt went nuts because there is only one "t" in lutefisk. :) Here are some recipes from the Sons of Norway. 25 Feb 08 - 11:14 PM (#2272441) Subject: RE: Art Thieme Offline for a while From: Stilly River Sage Lutefisk must be served hot on piping hot plates. Accompaniments vary from bacon or pork drippings, white sauce, mustard sauce, or melted butter which seems to remain a favorite. Boiled and steamed potatoes, stewed whole, dry green peas are a must as a vegetable accompaniment. The only other necessary additions are freshly ground pepper, lefse, or flatbread. In some parts of Northern Norway, lutefisk is served with melted goat cheese. How can you resist it--hot fish and goat cheese?! I have two copies of the cookbook mentioned at the bottom of that page, if you need one. . . |

I don't remember it as we left when I was a baby, but that didn't keep them from calling me their "little Norwegian!" I don't think I'd like lutefisk! I can't believe they cure it in lye, just like you said, Art! Oh, well, if they let it go too long, it turns into a handy soap! |
26 Feb 08 - 12:37 AM (#2272483) Subject: RE: Art Thieme Offline for a while From: Stilly River Sage Actually, you'd like this book. I was mistaken. The book mentioned on the lutefisk site is Ekte Norsk Mat; my book is the same authors, but is Ekte Nork Jul, traditional christmas cooking. Cookies, pastries, cakes, breads. . . not a fisk in sight! I suspect that getting lutefisk too close to the Dell might void the warranty. Say--we could send Chris some lutefisk! We need to offer him a huge thank-you--without his help this would have been quite difficult to pull off. SRS |

26 Feb 08 - 08:22 AM (#2272642) Subject: RE: Art Thieme Offline for a while From: bassen Lutefisk is made by soaking stokkfisk (dried cod) in lye, then steaming, simmering or baking to prepare. Bacalhau or bacalao or klippfisk is salted, dried cod. You can make lutefisk out of that too if you want, like they do in the part of Norway where I live. It's the softening in lye that makes it lutefisk (literally "lye fish"). Lutefisk is good - once a year, at Christmas , with lots of Christmas beer and akevitt to wash it down. Skål! Bassen |
