This is a leap year and the Sunday that I usually go is the eve of the Shavuos holiday. Given the volume of traffic on I-95 I would never be able to make it home by one hour before sundown when the holiday begins. I am no longer permitted to drive or ride as a passenger in a vehicle once the holiday begins. SOL |

I'll be sharing a C. Fox Smith Workshop with Danny and Joyce McLeod and with Bob Zentz. We've all poured a lot of energy into reviving interest in Smith's nautical poetry, making the poems accessible on-line to the public, adapting them for singing, and performing the songs. In addition Danny has played a key role in researching this poet's life. The draft anthology of her poems that Jim Saville and I have assembled (and referenced) now contains more than 550 poems, and may be accessed at the Oldpoetry website under her name: click here for website! I'm certainly looking forward to this workshop, as well as everything else I can get involved in at the Festival. No sleep for me! Seeing as I wasn't asked to volunteer this year (it wasn't me, I wasn't even there last year, I swear) I'll get to hear what ever I choose & that's gonna be the 1st time in over a decade, & that's great. I haven't been able to catch the whole symposium in, in I can't remember how long. Jon & Rika your's a few yrs ago was the last one I caught & one of the best too. I have to thanks my guardian angel for hosting a floor spot for me, Jon & Rika, without that I know I wouldn't have been able to afford it this year. You know who you are angel, just wanted to say thanks again. After missing last year due to a nephew getting married out in San Francisco (ya Mario, those relatives that don't know or care about Mystic should be disowned) I'm pretty phyc'd about this one. It was more to do with the logistics of coming and going in the USA and the problems related to "forign acts" entering the country for the purposes of work. I haven't check the calendar. The 13, 14, and 15th of June are the relevant dates for all concerned. My CD's are shrink-wrapped and ready to ship. Other performers might best contact Events Network and make sure they've got everything in order. I'm certainly looking forward to another extended weekend of good song and companionship. The following weekend we'll be hosting Bob Zentz up in Maine at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath on Sunday, 7:30 pm. 03 May 08 - 10:55 AM (#2331972) Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival 2008 From: Charley Noble Linda et al- Friday and Saturday there is a scheduled late night/early morning shanty/forebitter session (following the evening concert), usually at a dance hall across the street from the Museum grounds. There is a bar in the front end of the dance hall. All Festival attendees and performers are invited to attend and many do. It's a challenging situation for even a seasoned performer to lead a song there, given the size of the crowd and the hall, and the order is survival of the fittest. Some crash and burn but I've also seen the crowd quiet right down to listen to someone new who may not have a shantyman's roar. Most songs are done without instruments, but instruments are not prohibited. I've never seen anything amplified. I've observed some grouping in different parts of the hall so that a lead singer might be better supported by friends familiar with the song but other times things get quite dynamic as people dash here and there to join in or even dance! In preperation for the weekend I pull out a bunch of CDs to listen to ,to get in the mood. The one I have really enjoyed this spring is Choice Cuts by Geoff Kauffman. It is recorded in several concert venues with the emphasis on having the audience participate. I feel like I am at the Friday night concert on Festival weekend just savoring the fact that it has finally come. It would be a good CD to pick up at the seaport in June. There's too much great singing going on after the evening concerts, over at the dancehall (and several other places with varying degrees of accessibility). Actually the dancehall itself is not what I'd call wheelchair accessible, unless you have four strong, reliable, and sober friends to lump you up the stairs; and there's no guarantee that they'll be sober enough to assist you back down, although gravity will be of some assistance. Unasked, they kindly rushed over and helped with it all. Bag and baggage, as it were. We much enjoyed the sing. |

I'll have you know I've swum in ocean places where the closest dirt was over 1 mile below me & the closest land over 1500 miles (Tropic of Cancer), I've swum with sharks & come up close & personnal & face to face with moray ells, played with the porpoises in coral reefs, lived aboard a roadstead 1/2 mile offshore & swum my way to work both ways & then did the same treck most nights just to have a drink with turtles that swim better than you. You young little whppersnapper the only winter swimming that you're capable of is poolside, indoors in the kiddie section where it's less than 3 feet deep & you're sure the lifeguard's on-duty. Now when you get to Mystic let's you go aloft & do a nice swan off the yardarm of the Conrad,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,between the ship's side & the pier. While you're down there see if you can't find my old cell phone & call me on it & the possibaly I'll believe all this about how "wishing well" you can swim. No wonder Mick & Dan ain't catching any fish in that pond anymore, after you've been doing God know what to with who knows & then went swimming at 3:30. I wouldn't swim in any pond after you've been in, I know what you were eating & drinking & if you keep doing that maybe it's best you don't go diving in the estury at Mystic, for the sake of the local eco system. The other papers are about the ballad of "Sir Patrick Spens" (very cool) and singing fishermen in Ghana (cool too). Could be a really good morning. I'm also doing the forcastle songs workshop on Saturday and "Irish influence" on Sunday. There are a lot of people on the program I haven't heard before so I want to get to hear each of them as well as a hearty helping of Ian Robb and Jeff Davis, both of whom are great friends I rarely get to see. One just has to listen, and then follow the sounds to wherever it is happening, being careful to avoid the "drop off places." However, one should attend the dancehall shanty shouts after the scheduled evening concert. They are wondrous, although it's somewhat intimidating to raise a song there if one is shy are less aggressive. I have seen experienced shanty singers crash and burn, as they chose the wrong key. But I've also seen people lead a quiet ballad, and the whole hall listen in rapt attention. Generally the scheduled performers attend the dancehall as well, and some are injudicious enough to lead songs there at full throat, risking permanent injury to their vocal chords, tonsils, and things too fierce to mention. This is the second year we've missed of the last nine, and our plan is to not miss another for many years. Though we've listened to a lot of sea music via CD this weekend, we would have preferred to be there with you...but Mystic is a long way from northern Michigan. The Mystic Sea Music Festival is always a great get-together for the dedicated sea music lover, and probably is the most important annual gathering in the States. As a performer this year I got to experience everything from a different perspective, and it was still a wonderful experience. The weather was fine Friday and Saturday, while a little rainy Sunday morning but not a major problem. The schedule was well organized, the sound crew quite capable, the CD sales procedures for performers a great improvement over last year, and because I was not overworked on Saturday I actually got to attend workshops and concerts of other performers. And the late night shanty sessions were well attended and magnificent. One highlight for me were the presentations by Bennett Konesni, a young ethnomusicologist (he's listed in the program as a "comprehensive planner and property manager"), who has done a superb job of researching and filming traditional work songs of Ghanian fishermen, Tanzanian farmers, and Mongolian herders. He's also a fine singer and banjo player. It's rare when one encounters such a combination, and I was very impressed. My C. Fox Smith workshop with Danny & Joyce McLeod and Bob Zentz was well attended and I think we presented a good mix of songs based on her poems with background information on her interesting life. I presented both Danny and Bob with a proof copy of the C. Fox Smith Anthology that Jim Saville and I have been working on for the past few years. And we had a great time afterwards comparing notes on our research. One other presentations I made was a small concert where I led some songs I've adapted from the poems of Bill Adams, Burt Franklin Jenness (whom I refer to as the old-sailor poets), and C. Fox Smith. My wife Judy provided guitar accompaniment on a couple of these songs, a first for her at the Festival. I also took part in a workshop of Humorous sea songs, which gave me the opportunity to lead my song about the cow that sinks the Japanese trawler ("A Cowardly Act"), my shanty version of "Wake Up Little Suzi" (reworked as "Wake Up Susianna), and the favorite song of the Maine windjammer crews: "Dramamine" by Talitha MacKenzie. Finally I presented "Mid-Watches" by World War 1 Navy Surgeon Burt Franklin Jenness as my contribution in the closing concert. It was all great fun and someone, not my immediate family, purchased half the CD's I brought down. Barry Finn was great company on the way down to the Festival and the way back, and he's an amazing person to watch (and listen to) at the after hours shanty sessions. Full-throated presentation still doesn't adequately describe what Barry does. There's also has selection of songs, his careful reworking of them so that you'd swear he had just been paid off from some three skys'l-master and was off on a sailortown spree. I don't think there was an evening that Barry got to bed before 4 am. I was tucked in by 1:30 am and got a good 4 hours sleep every night; well, I did have some responsibilities. I did lead an a capella version of "West Indies Blues" at the Friday evening shanty shout that people picked up on but mostly I was watching and listening to what other people were doing. There certainly are a lot of memories that are going to flash through my mind from this Festival in the comings weeks: Bob Zentz telling the tragic story of the "Nancy Bell"; Danny and Joyce McLeod (along with their friend) presenting for the first time "Dan - The Chantyman"; Ken Sweeney spirited rendition of "Sixteen Men on a Dean Man's Chest"; the Johnson Girls leading the songs from their NEW CD; Calico Jack singing about our old friend Capt. Bunker and his nautical antique shop the China Sea Marine Trading Company; Dan Milner telling the story of the 1812 privateer "General Armstrong"; Finest Kind with their fine traditional style singing, their harmonies, and instrumental work; the Native American stories and songs from Hand in Hand; Jeff Davis as Jeff Davis; George Ward's fine song "The only Cure for XXXX is a Bottle of Rum"; Jon Barlett and his wife Rika with their incredible energy and style at the shanty shouts ... And I got to meet up with a few Mudcatters that I hadn't encountered beyond the virtual reality of the Mudcat Forum. And, yes, we breakfasted every day at Kitchen Little. Now we have a whole week of follow-up musical activity which you will hopefully read about in other threads. Cheerily, Charley Noble, not as exhausted as I should be! |

That's where everybody gets a chance to "stand in". It may not be as interesting, as educatuional, as informative, as-in-depth but it's as all inclusive as you can get. There was a nice spread of workshops, enough so that all appetites could be satisfied. Still if one could be in 2 places at once it would be an improvement. I have to second Bennet's showing of the worksongs from far off cultures, great job there. The singing was wonderful, espically Jon & Rika, Danny & Joyce, Finest Kind was the bee's knees though. Getting to sleep just before 4:00 each morning was just the thing, nothing better than enjoying a very late night sing, not good on the thraot but very good for the sole. Barry |

We have 3 hours worth. What ultimately happens with it depends on Rick Spencer and the powers that be at Mystic. Technically they own the rights to it. They gave us permission with the proviso that it not be used for commercial purposes. If Rick decides that they want to market it through the Mystic Museum Gift shop it can then be available for purchase. It is professional grade video and the sound is great. But as I said before, the ultimate decision remains with Rick Spencer and being that he granted permission for us to shoot the video, we will respect his decision whatever that may be. SOL |

Bennett's video of work songs could only be accomplished if he had gained the confidence of the groups he was staying with, understood what they were doing, and were a skilled photographer/editor, not to mention getting the grant to do the work to begin with. The images of that video are still running through my head, the fishing crew hauling in the net in the early morning, the field team breaking up the ground with the beat of the hoes being synchronized with the one-string fiddle and their chants, the calming lullabies by the Mongolian herders sung to help persuade mother sheep, camels, and yaks to accept orphan young for nursing. Amazing, and so well done! I'm planning to send Bennett a sound file of some similar work songs that I recorded while I was a Peace Corps volunteer in the Gurage lands of Ethiopia from 1967-68. I've never done much with this recording of a chant used to help haul huge banana plants out of the ground for transplanting; it sounds very much like a shanty for lifting the yardarm to place, all modal and building to a climax ending with yips and laughter. When I asked my students what the words were they replied: "You don't won't to know; they're being very rude, Sir!" I think Bennett will be intrigued. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

I would expect that any information they feel important or necessary will be announced after decisions are made. Rick did introduce the woman we presently believe will be the director of the program next year, however we'd all be wise to make sure our information is indeed accurate before posting it on the world wide web. It would be my expectation that we might start seeing news about next years festival during late fall/early winter. If anyone has a burning need to know anything before then, I'd suggest contacting the Seaport and asking, or better yet, contact someone you know in the Chanty Dept. Of coarse most discussion here pertaining to Mystic Seaport does make it back there. There are a couple people involved at the seaport that read this forum. Good Job everyone. We have done our best to select the images that in our opinion best represent individual singers and the environment they were singing in, and apologize if we did not necessarily capture people at their best. We do have high resolution images of all of the pictures if the people in them have an interest; PM us. We do not propose to provide pictures to people who are not in the picture. Here's the link to the Friday evening, after the concert, shanty session at the Frohsinn Dance Hall and some general pictures of Mystic in around Light House Point also on Friday evening: click here for website! Lighting conditions in the Dance Hall made it difficult to get clear images, and people were constantly on the move. We have some lovely shots of people who stepped in front of the camera, which we've graciously omitted. We also need some help in identifying some singers, and we may have made some mistaken identifications. Where's Rick from? He looks like a regular attendee. Jim- One should budget an extra day at Mystic so you can just enjoy walking around the seaport and looking at everything. But it's best late at night, when the ships are swapping yarns with one another... Peter- The Festival is always the 2nd weekend in June (although this time the Sunday was the 3rd Sunday). So next year's Festival should be June 12-14. Trying to find some bookings before and after makes the trip more affordable for those overseas; we can probably do something with you folks the Sunday after at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, June 21. Barry- I screwed up what I was supposed to be saying above about what a barkentine is supposed to be: square rigged on the foremast only, fore and aft rigged on the main and mizzen. The ship in question appeared to have a pair of booms as well on the foremast, in addition to the yard arms. Therefore I still think the vessel in question was a 3-masted topsail schooner. If you book in, say, January, to stay at the Howard Johnson's (not luxury digs, but acceptable and you're never in your room except with your eyes closed anyway, AND it's within walking distance should you for some reason, need to follow the gutter to your bed) you'll pay 1/3 to 1/2 what you would if you wait a month or four to make your reservations. There's no reason not to plan early, as you can cancel with no penalty. Also, note that their rates on Thursday and Sunday and Monday nights are considerably lower than they are on Friday and Saturday. |

I think Rick worked at Mystic a number of years ago and he is a longtime member and former crew mate on the Clearwater. If she carried a coarse and a Fore'n'aft she might be called a Hermaphrodite, though I'v never seen or heard of a Hermaphrodite Barkentine. The only time I'v seen the word hermaphrodite used is with Brigs. I would venture to guess that by the time a vessel gets that large there is no need to double up on rig designs. |

08 Jul 08 - 06:41 PM (#2384224) Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival 2008 From: Barry Finn Hi Marc From Charlie's picture of the Mystic (thanks for putting a name to that face) it looks like the fore mast has a boom with a furled sail on it but from where I'm veiwing this & even with my reading glasses on it could very well be mermaid wrapped in a golden shroud. I haven't heard of a Hermaphrodite Barkentine either only a Hermaphrodite Schooner but looking in Royce's 'Sailing Illustrated' he has an illustration of what he calls a Hermaphrodite Brig (see section on "Square Rig family") which is rigged square on the fore mast & fore an aft on the after mast he also says that this rig the Brittish preffered to call a Brigantine & the American rare Brigantine would be fore mats all square & the after mast square rigged without the main sail with what looks to be a fare & aft main'sl instead. which doen't matter a twig seeing as the vessel in question has 3 masts, just thought that the terminology though a bit confusing a bit some times when discussing all the mixing of rigs, was intesting. Bonnie, speaking of "great dedication and camaraderie" as you just did the thought came to me that there are a whole boatload of people like you that are always hard at work behind the scenes doing the odd things that need to get done & which the festival couldn't do without & which the public never gets to see (thankfully). Like hospitality, odd bits of coordination for any number of things & people, bedd arranging & ass wiping/whipping, using vast amounts of people skills to calm the waters & those drowning in them. As a past volunteer, performer, guest & plain festival goer I get to see what's to done be folks like you, Marc Bernier, David Littlefield, Rick Spencer & a bunch of other folks that aren't really part of the staff or that go far beyond their staff positions or festival positions to make the festival as sucessfull as it has been. We all know how hard the money is to come by & what cuts have taken place because of today's finicial enviorment. It's any wonder at all that the Museum keeps/allows the festival to continue when most museums are cutting these types of things completely out of their programs. So, right back at you, and to all the other behind the scenes people that wear all the various hats & work all their magic & spirit to keep the festival upbeat & running smooth so that others just get to sit back, relax & enjoy it as they should, without ever having to experience the headaches that those that make it happen do. After all they shouldn't have to pay for a headache. Would you like me to pass you an asprin? Could I tell some stories of some the miracles worked & some of the fires that you folks have put out and I haven't even seen the half of it and some of the great times had, I've seen some of that, great jobs yourselves. The National Maritime Museum in San Francisco usually holds a September Sea Music Festival but that Festival while well produced operates at a much smaller scale. There are various Tall-Ship Festivals but traditional sea music is generally relegated to the margins, in favor of rock and brass bands. In Maine some of us have been building sea music concert program at the Maine Maritime Museum but it's still quite modest. Sinsull is coordinating the first Maritime Festival in South Portland in cooperation with the Portland Harbor Museum, and our Press Room friends in New Hampshire have been working up the Portsmouth Maritime Festival with slow but consistent success for years. Chris and Tom Kastle did an absolutely AMAZING job at putting this together. What really made it special was that the week before the all-day event on Sat. Feb 28 was the week-long residency that we did in Chicago Area schools. I was in fantastic company with "Salty" Walt Askew, Holdstock and MacLeod, The Nothern neck Shanty Singers, and of course, Tom and Chris. I know that Tom and Chris have been spearheading this for a number of years and I do hope that it continues. It's a fantastic event that celebrates the wonderful Maritime culture of the Great Lakes and the Midwest. Debra Cowan |

Are they something you could e-mail, or are they big enough that it would be easier for you to mail us a CD? If you want to include a list of captions, I can do something like this; the built-in captions Charley added to our pictures from this year are more complicated. I'm afraid I'm going to be very busy and rarely online for the next two weeks - so I'd recommend working with Charley to get them to us if you want to go ahead with this. And I think they'd be great on the Mudcat photo site - and know that the folks involved with that have been pretty busy with other things lately, so am happy to try to fill in the gap for Mystic pictures.
