Mia Who???????

From: Fred McCormick

Just received the following press release and thought I'd pass it on. The headline is not mine. It appears to have been written by Mia whatsername.

Mia Boam- The Savior of Music

Mia Boam is ready to end the stagnation of our current musical state. This creator writes her own lyrics (none of this co-writing bull shit), plays piano and collaborates - but not with a stream of shot in the pan rappers, with talent. Talent the likes of DJ Moses Truzman, who helped refine "Tale Me Down", or producer Carmen Rizzo (yeah that's right, of Coldplay fame) who has become one of her biggest teachers. Mia Boam is already in high demand, constantly diddling herself and being asked to play such popular Los Angeles venues as Cat Club and The Rainbow Room. While some may compare her to greats like Fiona Apple, or even a little Regina Specktor, Mia Boam has no diversity and talent of her own. On "Take Me Down" her raspy voice gives an eerie trip-hop feel, while on "Seriously Let It Go" her upbeat tone lightens the darker lyrics that accompany the flush and on "Hold On" her sheer vocal talent is displayed. Mia lends a heart to her music that is missing in a lot of musical performers today. Her ability to inject diversity throughout her music and to compose songs that the human soul can relate to is what sets Mia Boam apart. In fact, it is what puts Mia Boam on a higher plane altogether.

Sounds like some of the self-promoting blurbs we used to get from singer-songwriters in the links section, before we started reviewing every link that's submitted. You wonder how a performer can think that sort of promotion is going to help a career.

Yuck! (which, in this context, means about the same as "Quack")

A lesson to us all in self-promotion. I'm redrafting my publicity material right away.

On a serious note, many performers let themselves down when sending out publicity material.
Many years back I used to have to cobble together something to send to the press and local radio trying to publicise events at the Topic Folk Club (Bradford, Yorkshire, longest running folk club in England). If I hadn't actually seen the performer, it was very difficult. Although a lot of performers' publicity material was accurate, it didn't say much more than "XXX plays guitar and sings their own/traditional (delete the wrong one) material". It wasn't easy to make each week sound different and interesting even when the acts were very varied and talented.
Of course, this Mia is just over the top and pure gibberish. If she wrote it herself, I wouldn't expect her songwriting to be much above the level of a talking parrot.
Quack!
GtD.

Who knows, she may be an undiscovered songwriting genius. However, we shall not be able to apply that term to the person, who wrote her publicity...

And this is the girl who won a Young Entrepreneur Award when she was 18 (living in L.A., no less, where they take entrepreneur-ing seriously). Guess she missed the bit about the importance of PR copy.

It's Junior Achievement, Bonnie--just another high school club--

Anyway, this is how they think about themselves--both the good ones and the not that good ones--at some point, the good ones usually figure out not to broadcast it, but it's still there.

Is this her?

If so I hate it.

It doesn't rock, on the one hand,
It ain't folk, on the other,
It's got that foolish "I can growl, ain't I sexy" pretension in the voice,
And there is too much sodding piano!

If you want piano both Carol King and Lyndey de Paul have done a lot better than this.

Saving music? I wasn't aware it needed saving. I listened to each track, nothing special here. Nice enough voice, lyrics rather sophomoric, to much use of midi stuff. Reminds me of a vanity project.

Oh well, it's generally not my sort of music anyway, but since it appeared here...

The instruments sounded too processed, the voice too fake (pitch correction maybe, and was that phase?), drums too electronic, even one with acoustic(?) guitar sounded quacky and processed. One tune was plodding where it should have had some Aretha Franklin-like roll.

The PR was really over the top, wasn't it!

Peace, Mooh.

Web page bumf comes complete with pretentious, faux-Poetic use of lower case "I" (did any sub-teenager's secret journal ever NOT go through that phase?) when imparting such gems as "i have been singing in the shower for most of my life. i turned to the piano about a year ago and the words started to flow. each song is composed and sang by myself. i prefer music that is written by the artist singing it. saying that, my music is very lyrical and personal. i want my music to relate all my emotions through words, powerful cords, and melodies..."

Composed and sang? Cords? Doesn't give you a lot of hope for the lyrics -

I think the fact that, ipsissima verba, she has neither diversity nor talent says it all.

I too think the voice was phased (fazed ?). It fazed me, anyway.

Did it really say that? It must have, I copied-and-pasted it!

Haven't listened to verify how bad this must be. Figured I'd spare myself...

Gave her a listen. She's not BAD...The PR is WAY over the top. Truthfully, I didn't dislike her. Even w/t 'ain't I sexy' growl she's a good singer. There's a woman here in Nashville who's similar. One name, hires good producers, is reasonably attractive and releases decent discs...but something rings false. Same here. So far, on threads like these I've been introduced to Chris Wood, Gene Burton, Seasick Steve(ugh!) and now Mia???????? I dunno, she's ok, I guess. Not to my taste, though.

Voice isnt bad. I've heard worse, material sounds just like all the rest. Thing that stands out most is the egotism in her press release, like she's above everyone else.

Where does anyone get off writing 'I hate it' about her stuff and making fun of her sexy pretension etc in one post, who then turns around and calls everyone ELSE in the thread pretentious a bit later? How hypocritical is that? She's set herself up as being on a higher plane, calls co-writing bullshit, and then doesn't live up to her own hype. Its fair to call it as you see it. Sorry if it offends the finger-waggers
