BS: Capture Video problem

Subject: BS: Capture Video problem
From: wilbyhillbilly

I have now spent six months trying to solve this To no avail, and I don't expect to get it solved here, but I would like some helpful comments if anyone has any.

I am running Win XP with nero suite for video, although I have tried loads of different "capture video" progs and devices but they all turn out the same, even had the tech bods at Nero coming up with all sorts of cures but still nothing.

I have two firewire slots on the back of my PC, when I capture video I get a scrambled picture, BUT I have now found that if I uplug the connection and put it in the one next door it works perfectly, UNTIL I close down. When I start up again, the same thing happens (scrambled picture) until I unplug and put it back in the slot next door, so the only way to get it to work is each time I want to use it is switch slots.
Ittook me five months to discover this way and now at least I can use the programme, but it's a bit annoying to have to keep going to the back of the PC each time.

Surely there must be some simple explanation.

Thoughts please.

Since JiK isn't around to give the 'definitive answer' :-P, I'll have a guess.

Woeking backwards, since moving it to the other port makes it work, then the OS is 'finding it' (attaching drivers, etc properly) the way it is intended to.

So therefore the first port is somehoew 'not initialised properly'... something you have probably already guessed...

Have you tried looking at the list of hardware (I'm currently on a linux box, so cannot remember how you get to there in the menu system!) and see if the firewire port is not initialised properly?

I'm not familar with either XP, Nero, or firewire, so I guess I'll have to leave it to JiK...

The thing is, once I have switched the PC off and on again, I then get a scrambled picture from the second port, and then when I plug it back to the first one it works again, until I switch off and on, then the same thing happens all over again. Aaaaaah.

This wouldn't solve your probklem, but it might make it less of a hassle till a solution comes around. Couldn't you get a Firewire cable so that you could do your plugging and unplugging more conveniently from the front?

Might be worth giving more details, such as which part of the world you are in.

Hi McGrath, I am using Firewire but the ports are at the rear of my machine.

I am in Suffolk, UK. Everything else works fine and at least I can now work with it, I really just hoped that someone might have come across this problem before and have a simple answer.

It's certainly not desperate anymore but would be nice to sort it.

I have given up on the "experts" at various programme help forums, they don't really seem that interested once you have purchased their programme, after all nowadays it seems that sales take preference to all else.

Never mind, it might even sort itself one day.

A new FireWire card in your PC might sort it out. Get one with a Texas Instruments chipset for best performance. They're not too expensive.

Thanks Jeff, I may as well try that. Nothing To lose.

I dunno will -- Firewire handshakes occasionally do act iffy, but not on this regular a basis -- the recurring pattern is what is odd.

Does the flp-flop between ports one and two happen when you quit the Nero program and then start it again? Or does it only occur when you shut the computer down and then start it again?

Do you have other firewire devices you have been able to run on the same ports, without the failure occurring?

What are you putting on the other end of the FW link--a videocam? A VCR?

It sounds like a timing problem.

Does the scrambled port still misbehave if you unplug the device and plug it back into the same port?

Right here goes,

If I quit Nero and return it is ok. So it is when I shut down my pc and then start it again.
I haven't got any other firewire devices I can run.
I have a VCR hooked up to it.
If I unplug it and then put it back in the same port (while the pc is running) it is ok.

So it seems to be every time I shut down pc then start it up?

Sounds like it sees it as a new device every time you plug it in from a cold start and loses it every time you power down. I would guess that if you leave the device connected when you cycle power it is, somehow, not seeing the device or loading the driver properly.

I am not sure how firewire works as I do not use it but I have seen similar conditions occuring with USB - Ie you need to either re-plug or swap ports to make the OS read the driver again. Make sure you have the latest drivers for the firewire ports. If they are onboard the MB make sure your Motherboard chipset driver is up to date as well. Finaly check with Micros**t. Unfortunately their XP patches do sometimes need to be applied when they discover it doesn't work properly with a new device.

One last question though. Are you sure this is not the way it is supposed to work? Maybe firewire does need to see the new device AFTER the OS has booted? If so, how about a firewire 'extension cable' so you can plug it in at the front?

Cheers

Dave

*trying to think*....I do know that there is an icon in my tray for access to the "safely remove hardware" option. I am supposed to use that when I remove my USB powered external drives.
Perhaps 'not' using that could make recognizing a piece of equipment a problem? I don't do this often, so I am not sure what might result from not doing it.

From what you say, all you have to do is replug the FW device when the dysfunction appears. What you have is a timing error creeping into the firewire transmission. This is a problem with the device drive OR with the firewire protocol itself,. I don't know enough to differentiate but you would do well to ensure you have any available updates to the device drive and to Nero itself. If the device or the software are not on the same page in the details, you get problems, as here.

I have looked for MONTHS for a firewire adaptor to turn it into one end with a HDMI plug.

It does not exist or I will have to experiment with splicing one myself.

I will give $100* to any mudcatter who succeeds in sending me a 4 pin firewire to HDMI cable or a practical solution . DH

*By paypal or postal money order.
