02 Feb 08 - 07:12 AM (#2251330) Subject: SONG OF THE EARTH From: GUEST,ALBERT Song of the Earth [the title comes from the novel by Alexander Cordell ] was performed last night at the Valley Folk Club in Pontardawe. The eleven strong troupe of writers and folk musicians were drawn from the Pontneddfechan Acoustic Club and the Valley Folk Club itself. The theme of the performance was life and work in the South Wales valleys and the songs and tunes came pouring out along with readings from Sharie Jones and Liam Kealy. Among the gems were "Brechfa Forest" written by Andy Jones of the Boys From The Hill and sung last night by Heather Pudner.She also sang a song about Welsh working class hero Dic Penderryn called "The Gates Of Cardiff Jail" written by Huw Pudner. Huw himself sang his song about open cast mining in the Neath Valley "Selar Hill" while Alan Chesterfield played banjo and contributed "Walking Boss" and "Roll Down The Line". Joe Hayton contributed "The Bells Of Rhymney" and "A Working Man I Am" AND Liam Kealy sang the evocative "When We Walked To Merthyr Tydfil". What a great night of songs from the earth! |

02 Feb 08 - 08:37 AM (#2251378) Subject: RE: SONG OF THE EARTH From: GUEST,Thomas And it was a very good night at the Ivy Bush ... in addition to the above mentioned singers Jamie Nemeth [fiddle ] ,Angela Nemeth soaring voice] and Sandor Nemeth guitar,voice and songwriting ] were on fine form singing Sandor's "Tareni Flood". I also enjoyed Janet Jones singing that great hymn of the Welsh religious revival of 1903 {?} "Here Is Love". Also stepping in at short notice were Ivor Gwylim [guitar], Rob Watkins [guitar] and Mark Thomas [guitar and drum ].Ifor sang that rare old welsh traditional favourite "Green, Green Grass Of Home!"
