Forum Search Question

Subject: Forum Search Question
From: Allan C.

All too often I get the following message when attempting a forum search: "The time taken to process your request has exceeded the allowable limit of 60 seconds. Please notify the server administrator (using the mail link below) that this error has occurred.

Note: You can override the request time limit by adding a 'RequestTimeout' parameter to the URL used to request the page (e.g. page.cfm?RequestTimeout=500)"

Now, this is probably quite clear to someone else, but poor, ignorant me can't make any sense out of it. Does this mean that there is a way to extend the amount of time allowed for the search? If so, exactly how would that be done? (Hopefully, you can phrase an answer in real English instead of whatever that is in the "Note".)

Thanks

I don't know what browser you are using, so some of my terms my not be correct.

when you reiceve the above error message, you should have a "location box" somewhere on your browser that tells you the address of the site you were trying to get. This will end in ".cfm" ADD the following to the address:

?RequestTimeout=500

then press "goto" or press the enter key, or whatever you do on your browser to make it go to the address in your location box.

I've actually found that some of the searches will complete with lower values then 500, such as 120, or 250

default is evidently 60 - which we seem to have outgrown.

Thanks, MMario. That makes sense. I will give it a try.
P.S. to any I might have offended by my wording above, my deepest appologies. My words, (at least the part in parentheses,)were reflecting my frustration but should not have been phrased in such a manner.

Allan, I think the error message you were complaining about comes to us from a friendly corporation known as Microsoft. That being the case, complaints, cusswords, and parenthetical remarks are completely justified and encouraged.
MMario, thanks for the explanation. I've been wondering about that for a long time. I guess I'll have to wait to get on my own computer to test it - these library computers are also worthy of cusswords and parenthetical remarks.

but that still doesn't work for me. I even tried raising the number to 750 and then 1000. I still get the timeout error. bummer

The forum is made up of over 75,000 messages right now, and grows very fast. Currently I'd say it's nearly impossible to do a body search in any reasonable time frame. For our new version of the site (a week or two) there will be an index of the messages that will make it easily searchable. So for now, stick to subject line searches and wait for the new site to go up. Also, you could just ask Joe Offer, and he's likely to know just about anything.

Wow, Max! Right on top of the problem as usual! Thank you for all you do.
