From: katlaughing I've had a theory, for years, that I hear better from one ear than the other and I've always wondered if it had to do with playing the violin so much when younger. I had thought my left ear, being closer to the fiddle, would be the one to suffer from that proximity, but it seems to be better than my right, more able to "tune in" and just plain hear better. I've never checked them with a doctor nor, asked about my theory, except recently when talking to my dad, who has fiddled for about 70 yrs. He'd never thought about it, but agreed that he thinks it is likely, as once he DID think of it, he noticed a difference. Have any of you noticed this? Thanks, katlaughing |

From: Paul Jay katlaughing, I've played the fiddle for 20+ years and it does seem that my left ear is more sensitive to sound. My wife says that neither of my ears is sensitive to sound. So I went to an audioligist(?) who checked my hearing and found a curious thing. I hear well in all ranges EXCEPT the one wy wife speaks in. I even have a piece of paper to prove it! Cheers |

Seriously, I read somewhere years ago that the left and right ear do process sounds differently, but I just can't recall what those differences were. I've been playing fiddle a little lately, and I think it just trains you to be more aware of small differences in pitch. |

All the players that I know seem to have bad shoulders, necks and backs. Has no one invented a stand, that held the fiddle while you just got into it and played? |

Don't some countries with fiddle-type instruments play them resting against the waist rather than the neck? |

I get really embarassed when I ask someone to spell something I couldn't make out, and they look at me as if I am a simpleton and spell out slowly B-E-E-R H-A-L-L, and then explain that DEER usually gather in the woods. By the way Les B the song is the Twa Sisters, or Two Sisters. It is ,I believe done in more variations than any other song I have ever heard. |

From: Bert It's a known fact that most people suffer from a hearing loss in the upper frequencies as they age; with the exception of those people who USE those upper frequecies. I haven't heard of this being one sided but it's quite possible that you are seeing this effect. You use the left ear more, so it is more sensitive. Regarding playing position. In the Middle East, the one stringed stick fiddle is played as follows. The player squats cross legged on the floor. The fiddle is held vertically in front of him with the spike between his toes and the string facing away from hime. Bert. |
