Fiddleplaying causeshearing loss/improvement?

I've had a theory, for years, that I hear better from one ear than the other and I've always wondered if it had to do with playing the violin so much when younger.

I had thought my left ear, being closer to the fiddle, would be the one to suffer from that proximity, but it seems to be better than my right, more able to "tune in" and just plain hear better.

I've never checked them with a doctor nor, asked about my theory, except recently when talking to my dad, who has fiddled for about 70 yrs. He'd never thought about it, but agreed that he thinks it is likely, as once he DID think of it, he noticed a difference.

Have any of you noticed this?

Thanks,

katlaughing

katlaughing, I've played the fiddle for 20+ years and it does seem that my left ear is more sensitive to sound. My wife says that neither of my ears is sensitive to sound. So I went to an audioligist(?) who checked my hearing and found a curious thing. I hear well in all ranges EXCEPT the one wy wife speaks in. I even have a piece of paper to prove it! Cheers

I am chuckling my arse off at that one! Are you sure this doesn't belong on the more BS thread?!**smile**

Thanks, Paul Jay! It is interesting to "hear" you might've noticed the same thing.

Paul, that is not at all impossible. My mom can't hear in the lower range,ie. my dad. I'm wondering if my hearing isn't askew because I hear the wrong words all the time. People wonder why I am laughing when nothing humorous was said. But it's not what was said, it's what I heard!

What else can you expect if you scrape hairs from the ass-end of a horse, powdered with the sweat of a tree, across the guts of a cat ?!? And all within inches of your face !! Seriously, I read somewhere years ago that the left and right ear do process sounds differently, but I just can't recall what those differences were. I've been playing fiddle a little lately, and I think it just trains you to be more aware of small differences in pitch.

I have even heard that fiddle playing is implicated in eardrum cancer. I recommend you stop immediately and get rid of the instrument. Contact me for information on where to send it.

Huh?

I love Les B's description of fiddle playing and am reminded of the one time I tried dragging a bow across the guts of a cat. The resulting sound would indicate that the cat was still alive at the time and deeply resented what I was doing.

Kat, why would suppose that Paul Jay's post should be in the BS thread? We aare discussing music here, after all.

Les, I meant to mention also, careful how you spread that description about the horse hairs and the catgut. If the animal rights folk get their hands on that were are liable to see the banning of fiddles as we know them!

it does seem to be the most difficult instrument to hold, let alone play. All the players that I know seem to have bad shoulders, necks and backs.

Has no one invented a stand, that held the fiddle while you just got into it and played?

Hey! Banj, I resemble that remark about animal rights phoaks! Yet....I love the description, too, just don't tell my cats! And, I just think Paul Jay's is an "equal opportunity" posting**Big grin**!

I love starting my day on here. I always get a good heart-healing laugh from something someone said! Thanks, everybody oh and Murray? In your dreams!!! I'll jist hafta tek m'chances with the eardrum thing!

My singing has the similar effect: others sing with a finger in one ear, in my case it's the audience who put BOTH fingers in their ears! Don't some countries with fiddle-type instruments play them resting against the waist rather than the neck?

Banjer, there is music discussed in the "more BS" thread, too. I just guess you couldn't see my tongue in my cheek through the computer screen.

Banjer: And we won't mention to the animal rights folks all the calves and 'possums that have gone into banjo heads over the years, let alone the abalone that have given up the ghost for inlays on guitar necks. Actually, I'd be pretty happy if someone used my hide & bones to make good music. What's that song about the miller's daughter that drowns and they make fiddle pegs out of her long finger bones ?

What is the difference between a violin and a fiddle? Nobody cares if you spill beer on a fiddle!

Margarita I'm really glad you said that. It happens to me all the time. I get really embarassed when I ask someone to spell something I couldn't make out, and they look at me as if I am a simpleton and spell out slowly B-E-E-R H-A-L-L, and then explain that DEER usually gather in the woods.

By the way Les B the song is the Twa Sisters, or Two Sisters. It is ,I believe done in more variations than any other song I have ever heard.

OK Alex, what then is the difference between a violin and a viola?

A viola burns longer!

It's a known fact that most people suffer from a hearing loss in the upper frequencies as they age; with the exception of those people who USE those upper frequecies. I haven't heard of this being one sided but it's quite possible that you are seeing this effect. You use the left ear more, so it is more sensitive.

Regarding playing position. In the Middle East, the one stringed stick fiddle is played as follows.
The player squats cross legged on the floor.
The fiddle is held vertically in front of him with the spike between his toes and the string facing away from hime.

Bert.
