Obit: John Wright (UK, Feb 2008)

Subject: Obit: John Wright (UK)

Just passing on the devestating news that John Wright, who for the past decade or more has lead many incarnations of the John Wright Band, has passed away. I afraid I have no details though.
John has been a friend of mine through virtually all of that decade and I am struggling to believe the news. A great singer has been taken before he should have been in my opinion.
My most heartfelt condolances go to Barbara and John's family.

One of nature's gentlemen. He introduced me and many others to singer / songwriters who would otherwise have remained unknown.

The late 90's line up of the band was my personal favourite, he remains the most charismatic performer I have ever seen.
He'll be sadly missed

He was an absolutely stunning performer. He said he would only sing songs that he believed in, and this gave his act a tremendous power. My favourite was the one that starts "They say the battle is over....."

I also loved his story about the sheepdog trials "There was nowt wrong with the dog".

RE: The "John Wright of Jew's harp fame" someone asked about earlier in this thread was truly an amazing performer who got sounds out of those much maligned instruments that I have never ever heard anyone else duplicate---except possibly an expert Tuvan mouth singer. I heard him in the later 1970s with his performing partner from France named Catherine --- I can't recall her last name--but maybe it was Perrier. This man definitely spoke with a British accent and I assumed he was from England.

Please, someone, clarify whether or not we are talking about the same gentleman named John Wright!?

Either way, I am saddened by the death of this talented man this thread is mourning, and I send my sincere condolences to all who loved him and his music.

Art, you're thinking of a different John Wright. The one you and PMB are talking about has lived in France for years, was a great singer, Jew's harp player, fiddler, and in the 1980s and 90s was a member of the Breton Sea Shanty group Cabestan. His wife was indeed Catherine Perrier.

I don't know whether the John Wright who moved to France is still with us, but I have no reason to think he's not. He's definitely a different man from the John Wright who this thread was about.

Very sad to hear it nonetheless. Never got to see the late John Wright live, but I have a couple of CDs he's on....

As far as I know the John Wright, married to Catherine Perrier in Paris, is indeed alive and kicking. I think the Michael Wright mentioned above is his brother, but I may be wrong there.

I didn't know the John Wright of the John Wright Band, from what I have read I wish I had, and mourn his passing along with everyone else.

I got confused about the two John Wright's a few years back.
Lucy Wright who used to play at Gainsborough Folk Club and Faldingworth Live, kep't on talking about her uncles John & Michael Wright and it was quite some time before I realised that the John Wright that she was on about, had no link to the John Wright Band.

I do remember that one of her uncles was a brilliant Jew's Harp player and indeed Lucy learn't to play the Jews Harp from him.

So the answer is that John Wright (Jews Harp) was not the John who sadly passed away.

There is a book of condolences on his website, as shown in the link above in danensis's posting.
From what I have heard too it sounds like it was a massive stroke that sadly took him away. He had been due to do another tour in Scotland in March.
He did at one time have a young fiddler in the band called JOE Wright, who came from Norfolk (not too far from Lowestoft, so maybe that's who Captain Birdseye is thinking of?) This was the source of a number of jokes; "the son I never knew I had" at his gigs.
I believe John was from the North of England?

Sad is not just the word...it's the deepest felt feeling of sorrow and tears for losing this musician, this friend, this husband, this father, this grandfather!

We got the new by Els and Rian his Dutch tourassistants. They, as we were too, were as struck by lightning finding the newly wed husband John passed away so suddenly. Joke and I have been to concerts John gave in Holland quite often and will always remember the warm ambiance of his songs as a kind of verbal embrace everyone in the hall experienced.

Many songs have been mentioned by those entering their thoughts onto the condolences website(s) in UK, DE, DK, BE, NL as being of importance to all morners. To me it's "Dance with my father again" that struck me and brought me to tears.

Barbara, there's always too little words, too little arms around you, too little time to speak, to cry, to comfort, to remember your John.... because afterall that's who he was: YOUR John.
Knowning him just a little ....I'nm sure his love will never leave you and the (grand)kids.

Cherish his unique love for ever in your heart and soul!

Love from Zoetermeer (NL)

John Wright 1947-2008

Pete Abbott (John Wright Band) will be at The Clarence Folk Club (Blackpool) this Wednesday 13th February, it's going to be a tough gig!

I heard this evening (too late to confirm) that the evening will be turned over to "John's songs", and Gregor Borland (John Wright Band) is coming over to Join Pete for the evening.

This will be a sad farewell to John but I'm sure he would prefer to leave us all with a smile on our faces, fond memories of his friendship and appreciation of his works.

To quote Pete's song "Windy Harbour"

Life is a game Win or lose it's all the same
you live and you die Just don't let it pass you by
You have choices to make You have chances to take
You will laugh, you will sing and you will cry
But don't let a moment pass you by"

John sang this song for us the last time we saw him and certainly John didn't let a moment of life pass him by!

He is going to be missed by us and everyone his life touched, a sad loss.

RIP John Wright

This morning we received the bad news from our friends who introduced us to your music and concerts. From that very first moment you could count us to your fans. At least once a year we met somewhere in Holland in concert, but also after your moving shows there was always time for an autograph and a good word. We will never forget the last time we saw and heard you in Voorhout the 20th of November 2007: a concert in a café! But what an excellent music and intimacy with you and all the people over there. That we had the opportunity to meet and enjoy you in Voorhout will be a little consolation to the pain of missing you forever. Your music will never leave our souls. John, thank you for all. There is no doubt you will rest in peace.

Dear Barbara, family and friends of John,
What a great loss of a wonderful man with a golden voice and heart.
How shocked we were hearing the news that John passed away. We visited many of his concerts during the last 10 years. The last one was in november in De Wijnberg in Sneek (his home in Holland).
We (my daughter and I) had a such a nice talk with John after the concert. We tried to get tickets for the next concert but it was sold out. Knowing we never see and hear John again makes us very sad. We will miss John dearly but his memory will live on in the many beautiful songs and lirycs he left us. Our deepest condolences for Barbera, John's family and the many friends he has.

As a comfort for you all I found the next poem of Emilia Larson:

May you always have an angel by your side
Watching out for you in all the things you do
Reminding you to keep believing in brighter days
Finding ways for your wishes and dreams to take you to beautiful places
Giving you hope that is as certain as the sun
Giving you the strength of serenity as your guide
May you always have love and comfort and courage
And may you always have an angel by your side
May you always have an angel by your side
Someone there to catch you if you fall
Encouraging your dreams inspiring your happiness
Holding your hand and helping you through it all
In all of our days, our lives are always changing
Tears come along as well as smiles
Along the roads you travel, may the miles be a thousand times more lovely than lovely
May they give you the kind of gifts that never, ever end:
Someone wonderful to love and a dear friend in whom you can confide
May you have rainbows after every storm
May you have hopes to keep you warm
And may you always have an angel by your side.

Few singers can make a song their own without a brimful of passion - John Wright came into the folk relatively late without the preconceptions of what a "folksy style " might sound like. To those who found his unique singing style at odds with a more traditional "singer with guitar" performance, one needed to take a step back and listen -- I felt he gave every song the breath of his sincerity and passion. Another great loss from a gentle man of music.
Perhaps those who doubted his delivery and materisl might now buy an album or two.------------ Sounds like the audience at the Clarence in Blackpool had a real good night.

"European tour to go ahead in memory of lead singer John
By Jim McTaggart

MUSICAL TRIBUTE: John Wright with his dog, Stanley
MORE than 50 concerts arranged by folk singer John Wright before his sudden death are still going ahead because so many fans want to pay tribute to him.

He was booked to perform with his three-man band in Germany, Holland and at many venues in Britain before he died in February at the age of 60 at his home in Barnard Castle.

There are so many requests to hear his songs that his widow, Barbara, has announced that the band will fulfil all engagements, with guitarist Pete Abbott singing in his place.

Mrs Wright said: "Usually when a singer passes away, his gigs are all cancelled. But the response from the public has been so great that we are going ahead with everything.

"That in itself is a huge tribute to John.

"He always said he wanted his music to live on after his death. I know this is what he would have wished. He treated his audiences like his family, and now his vast family want to pay their respects to him."

advertisement
The trio, still known as the John Wright Band, has given five concerts so far, and will give the sixth at Darlington Arts Centre at 8pm next Thursday. They will then tour the UK, followed by a tour of Germany in October and Holland in November.

They finish each gig by playing a record of Mr Wright singing one of his favourites, Silver Thunderbird, and hanging his dark brown trilby on the microphone stand.

Mrs Wright said: "They do this as a wonderfully moving tribute to John. They walk quietly off stage, leaving the last word to him, and the audiences find it very touching."

A concert due to take place at Frosterley Village Hall, in County Durham, was cancelled shortly after his death, but has been rescheduled for Saturday, May 31.

Apart from Mr Abbott, other regular band members were champion fiddler Gregor Borland, harmonica player Fraser Speirs and Joe Wright (no relation), who plays fiddle, mandolin and guitar.

Three of the four will take part in each concert.

Mrs Wright had been married to her husband, a former cavalryman in the Army and later a shepherd, for only a month when he died, but had been his manager for several years.

He said he moved to Barnard Castle because he loved looking round its neighbouring farmland and could get easy access to motorways and airports when he set off on tours."

For some strange reason this news only reached us this week. Sad, shocking and tragic.
We all mourn the loss of so passionate a performer. We never know when the thread will run out, do we?

Nearly 5 years on, I have every reason to believe that the fiddle- and Jew's-harp-playing John Wright, brother to Michael and Lucy's uncle, husband of the amazing Catherine Perrier, is with us still. I looked John and Catherine up in France in July.

It's ten years on now.

He is still missed.
