10 Feb 08 - 04:00 PM (#2258753) Subject: Library Music - Gloucester/Portsmouth From: adventure We have been back and forth from Gloucester, MA to Portsmouth, NH for the past several years singing at events and pubs and what a great connection it has been...Doryman and his mate from the Schooner Adventure in Gloucester, MA would like to bolster up the two libraries of these communities with some traditional folk and sea music CD's. Both libraries, Sawyer Free in Gloucester, MA and the Portsmouth Public in Portsmouth, NH would be the targeted libraries of choice for this effort. Valerie Marino and Carol Gray of Gloucester and Katrina Caulfield of Portsmouth are our contacts. We have already primed the pumps with several CD donations to Portsmouth and are looking for assistance from anyone that would care to donate a few traditional CD's to this effort. If you care to support this worthy cause and care to donate a CD or several to these two libraries, please send them along to us....Peter and Joanne Souza, PO Box 525, Essex, MA 01929. We'll make sure that they get hand delivered to the libraries in hopes that all visitors will have a chance to listen to and to keep traditional music alive and well. As a new iPod owner, I'm in the process of copying all my stuff onto the computer anyway. Once I replace the CD burner (d'oh!), I'll burn a backup CD for my files and then and then donate the original to this effort. (I'm assuming that my music will still be legal in the eyes of ASCAP given this approach.) An additional thought about this effort: As non-profit entities, it might be good exposure for Adventure and the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival to have the CDs stamped "Donated by..." on the copies that go to each city's library. Depending on the response of our respective crews, we could even do a press release on this "campaign to preserve and share the heritage of these seafaring port cities." Peter |

We like the idea about a "donated by" on the CD, but we are truly interested in just getting some good traditional folk and sea music CD's for these two city libraries. There is rich history in both places as we have seen and bolstering up the libraries with local music would help at least to share it with the public for years to come. Let's see who comes through with a few donations. Barry was the second person to belly up to the bar on this "ask". The idea of a Press Release sounds really good. Maybe we could knock heads and come up with something to put in the papers of both communities. Thanks for your ideas and thoughts. You're a good man. Just hope those who do and can will. Row hard. You have a wealth of information and songs behind you. We are trying to do this for a good reason and are looking for ways to promote the idea, too. Whatever you and your crew can do....thanks. Rapaire....yes.....money is awfully tight all around. Last year the library director in Gloucester quit his post as no funding was coming forward for the facilities or programs. We performed several readings and singing events and most were donated time...as we expected. Send me a letter to the address posted and maybe Adventure could do a free talk about our National Historic project of rebuilding an 82 year old fishing schooner at your library if we are within an appropriate travel range. I've often wondered about the Audio collections at libraries. Questions: 1. Do they want brand-new items only? 2. If they take used items, do they take cassettes, too? 3. As for your own project, how far off the "traditional folk and sea music" track are you going? I'll look around through my recorded music.
