BS: SINSULL's Turn

11 Feb 08 - 12:48 PM (#2259544)
Subject: BS: SINSULL's Turn
From: SINSULL

Some of you have noticed that I have been more than my usual "confused" lately. My thyroid finally went haywire and a biopsy shows a cancerous growth in the left lobe. On Friday Jacqui and I will see an oncologist at Mass. General (My company will pay 100% of all medical, transportaion, room and board expenses). Hopefully the surgery will happen soon. Either they will remove the nodule or the entire thyroid (my preference). It can be done on an outpatient basis but because of my age (?????when did become old?) they recommend an overnight. Recovery should be two days rest and then back to work.

This has been monitored carefully for years - Hashimoto's disease, an auto-immune hereditary problem that attacks the thyroid and causes hormone levels to go up and down unpredictably. I don't expect any unpleasant surprises but even if it has gone into the lymph nodes or bone it is considered the more treatable of cancers. The one danger is to the nerves of the larynx causing a loss of speech.

Keep me in your thoughts. Direct any positive thoughts you may have to my neck and the surgeon's hands. On Friday, we will know more.

Mary

A good thing there is a company there to make the remedy possible. Well done on that part.

While I am sure many of us have wanted to get their hands around your neck at various times, this time we'd better let the expert do it.

Good luck, GOd bless, and white light fill your very being.

Go SINS!

My mom had most of her thyroid out for cancer as a young adult, and never had a worry after. If they give you synthetic hormone replacement for it, you may want to look into that picture carefully, as it will affect a lot of other things.

You're going to be fine.Trust ol' Doc Spaw. I've been working on this medical degree for years at Igotit Medical College. Several points in your favor here and the first being that this is a very slow growing cancer.   The second being it is equally slow and even a bit reluctant to metastasize. That's medical truth, but here's a story! (Yeah, I know........OH NO SPAW, NOT ANOTHER DAMN STORY.........just shut ta' hell up....)

Karen's Dad lost his voice with vocal cord problems almost 9 YEARS before they realized it was caused by thyroid cancer. Simple meaning is this one is very slow to grow. Although her Dad's did spread it had been growing for over 9 years before they found it and was probably about 10 or 11 years old! Metastasis to the lymph nodes is the most common spread but as you already know is very treatable with excellent success.

PROGNOSIS: You're goin' to kick this fockin' thing in the ass. The surgery will go well and you'll do the recommended follow-up and all will be well.

Next case please!

Pat and Karen (and all our best thoughts as well)

Stretch out and put your feet up in the stirrups while I get the appropriate tool..............well, yeah.....I know its a long way up to your thyroid from there but, uh.....like, I got a really long tool I can use and.........Hey! Where ya goin'........Wait!.................Damn..........................

First thing I was told by the technician & Doctor preparing to do the biopsy on my thyroid nodes was that if it is cancer, is the "best" one to have as it is easily eradicated. I'm really not sure whether the mention of a good cancer made me feel any better about having the biopsy!

But mine are benign little nodes & have been around since 1999, and I've had another biopsy since, so I'm getting used to the procedure & I'm very comfortable with the on-going care of my Specialist.

Get well soon, you'll feel better (to quote my favourite Get Well card!)

Ya' know Sins, I can see how it might be troubling to you that several of the major goofballs of the 'Cat......me, Bruce, Barry, Mick, etc...... have all said they have no worries! Of course WE have no worries but with support like us you may be in serious trouble.

Having had a number of near-death experiences in the past 10 years I want to echo what Barry said. I seem to be blessed by someone, somewhere. So if you even contemplate sending any more of those crazed and gyrating and often scary "toys" I will have a conversation of my own with the powers that be..............

Just back. I am fine; my thyroid isn't. The oncologist strongly recommends complete removal which is fine with me. Recovery rate is 99%+. If the cancer has spread (and he is fairly certain it hasn't) there are a variety of treatments available.

News to me: Hashimoto's Disease did not cause the cancer. It was caused by a genetic mutation of the thyroid cells. As far as I know I have had minimal xrays - dental, mammograms, chest xrays - so I don't know where it came from. I do know that once my thyroid is out, I should be my old self without the manic lapses.

The news is as good as it could be. Jacqui will have to fill in the details. Next step is a meeting with an endocrinologist and the surgeon. The surgery will be done asap but within two months is still safe.

Thank you all for the good thoughts and prayers, PMs, lit candles and general moral support. The Maine crowd has been looking after (read: mothering) me. By the way, the oncologist said he would never have believed that Jacqui was old enough to be my mother - at least that's how I heard it.

And Maeve - they are lining up to snatch up the best of the hideobilia should I take a turn for the worse.

Which brings up the Assistant's desk which had an odd assortment of items some quite beautiful...and some not. There were quite a few insipidly nasty angels so I asked (with the thought in mind that I had finally located a repository for my undesirable collection of angels) "You collect angels?" She replied "No. They seem to come to me" I sympathized" Grateful patients inflict a lot of "stuff" on medical people as do grateful houseguests.

Hi - just back from a weekend away with no PC access. I've just about managed to get the shakes under control with a fix so can report in, although I think that Mary pretty well covered it.

We will probably be back down in Boston on the 26th to see the surgeon and, hopefully, the endocrinologist, although that date may change if the EC isn't available, or we might need yet another trip to see him. The oncologist went to great lengths to tell us that the was an infinitesimal chance of the cancer not being eradicated by removal of Mary's thyroid and even less chance that it might spread further. Mary will most likely be in hospital for one night and then allowed home to rest and should be back on her feet in a week. She will be sore and may have problems swallowing for a few days so I'm already thinking about easy to eat meals for her for that period.

The trip was not without adventure. We had crazy bus drivers both there and back - I swear they choose them for their whacky sense of humour. If you're ever thinking of coming up this way fly into Logan and take the Concord Trailways up to Portland - you'll see what I mean.

When the oncologist walked into room it was a bit of a shock - he hardly looked old enough to be in medical school, let alone the one oncologist on the staff there. Mary told him that she had a son older than him, which amused him greatly and he did say that he was older than he looked. The collection of goodies on the assistant's desk had to be seen to be believed - no doubt it will be added to at some point.

We came out of the hospital and hailed a cab that was just going past. When the guy asked us if we knew the way to Boston South Station we both knew it was going to be an interesting ride, particularly since he had an accent exactly like Barry Finn's. He chatted away all the way, occasionally stopping to ask another cab driver for directions. We just nodded and tried to restrain the giggles until we got out of the cab. Boston is an interesting place!

Some of you are asking what can you do for Mary - I have a particular idea - PM me for details if you are interested. (hehehehehehehe)

Subject: RE: BS: Hospital 'To Do' list brainstorming
From: gnu - PM

Right.... so far...

Hospital -

Bring: soft packaged, non-perishable foods – e.g., pudding, housecoat, sweat pants, tees, u/w, socks, slippers, Vaseline, eyeglasses, books, crossword book, pens, clipboard, dental floss (little jobbies), ziplock baggies, small flashlight, Tylenol (only use if that is what they are giving you and they forget), blindfold and ear plugs, ice bucket, fan, insulated coffee mug, Music and recorded books and player, batteries, do NOT take valuables but if you do MARK all CDs, CD players, etc. for the same reason (if there are serial numbers, record them and the brand, model, and other such data), a marker/tape/tags for ID'ing stuff, pics of you/ family/ friends/ pets/ goals, change for payphone, list of telephone numbers (pizza delivery at top), sunglasses, list of meds you are on and if any allergies, pillow (better check first as might not be allowed),

Questions: ask for Discharge instructions NOW! (if you can't drive for two weeks after, it's good to know that NOW), ask the doc to write prescriptions for meds before you go in (if he can - great fun going home and having to ask the taxi to stop at Shoppers Drug Mart on the way... ever been in the checkout line at one? Takes forever!),

Home -

Food       pudding, cottage cheese, yogurt, juice, ice cream, bananas (bananas? what a stupid idea! unless you freeze them first??)

Pre-paid cell phone minutes or cordless phone, snow removal, mail & newspaper delivery during & after (DA), last will & testament, who holds papers & keys & ???, who will be allowed to stay or visit and tell them so (you might not want certain people around, especially if you are spaced out on drugs),

Keep 'em comin!

Don't pay a Boston Cabbie if they ask you where South Station is. Hire me as your Indy 500 tour guide. There's not a back alley I can't go the wrong way on. You can get a horse driven cop to give you a lift from Mass Gereral to South Station, as long as they know the way down hill & the horse has the strength to go up hill. From Mass General just follow the smell of salt water up over the hill till you get a whiff of the century old molasses, then head downhill towards the water till you can't smell the molasses any more. At that point walk left keeping the water on your left shoulder till South Station looms up in front of you. Inside the station get a slice of Mama Rigina's pizza. Best in Boston for at least the past 50 yrs.
Mary, Jacqui, the bus should stop at Park Street Station before it reaches South Station. Mass General is just 1 train (On the Silver Line) stop from there. Don't use those nickle chasers again, you probably got a ride with my father. WEven after he died he wouldn't give up his job as a cabbie in Boston, there's just to many people like you out there in need.
As far as what to bring for an overnight stay. 1 very long straw, the Frappes that are made in the East St Cafe (the name of the hospital cafeteria, in the basement) are to die for, REALLY.The maels in that cafeteria are pretty good to & the candy store on the 1st floor is excellent too. They have all the local news papers near the main entrance & across from that in the library is the computers which have internet access free & usually available too. If you can sneek ou down the street on the main drag (Cambridge St) is a Hamburger joint, the best burgers anywhere, I think that's all they sell, it's been a landmark for yrs. Around the corner going uphill is a movie theather. On the 6th floor of the hospital you can see all the transplant folks, they like presents & they encourage you to throw peanuts at them if you get bored. Say hi, from me. There's a coffee shop on the 1st floor just past the newspapers with yummy muffins & great coffee. The pool is usually closed during winter. Don't eat the food they serve if you can afford the Cafe, to bad if they put you on a restricted diet, plan for battle. Charles Street Jail is just next door, go in & have a look. You can get a nice meal there in one of the few cells that are left, look for the "BF 1969" carved into the wall, tell them you know me & the meal may be for free. They did a fantistic job with the renovations, it's now a grand hotel, very costly too. Imagine, one could stay there for nothing in the old days, but the beds were 1/2 singles at the time & the food sucked. I believe there are still ghosts that they couldn't get rid of that date back from the hanging days.
OK, so after all this excietment, sight-seeing & joy-riding your try-rod should be just about ready to fall out. So there you go, all better. Anything else I can hepl you with, once you're able. Buzzy's Roast Beef is no longer at the rotary, so don't bother looking.
LOL

Reminder: Spending more than $.50 on a piece of crap is sinful. No pun intended. $75 for a plastic avenging angel is obscene. Teletubbies are perverts just ask Jerry Falwell and Tom Paxton. The art of the crappy gift is finding the perfect horror (that some one else has paid $75 for) for $.50 or less. Jacqui and i have mastered the the craft. The rest of you are posers - searching the net for crap is the easy part. Negotiating down to it's real value is what makes us great.

We just got back from Boston trip #2.

This time we saw the surgeon who did an ultrasound to check the state of Mary's thyroid gland. It is very inflamed from the problems that Mary has had over many years and, with the extent of the damage that has been done to it, there is a 60% likelihood that there will be a cancerous growth.

The surgeon explained that, even it there is no cancer, with Mary's symptoms, it is likely that they may agree to remove the gland anyway, if the insurance company will agree to the procedure. Quite often the thyroid will burn itself out naturally, which would be a relief to Mary, but only the endocrinologist would be able to give any idea of how much longer that might take.

On Friday we go back to Boston to see the endocrinologist - a 9.00am appointment that will require us to catch the 6.00am coach from Portland - and, by then, the pathologist should have a definitive answer about the cancer from looking at the slides that are finally with Mass General.

More news then.

Just to give you an idea of my "confused" moments: tonight my garage sent a van to pick me up and drive me home. My car wasn't ready. So I went downstairs and the van was waiting in front of the building. I got in and said "Hi". Then proceeded to babble about my car problems, my health, the weather, etc.
The driver finally looked at me and said "I am not who you think I am" I must have looked panic stricken because he quickly added "My fiance works here and I am supposed to pick her up. You are perfectly safe."

Well - it was a red van...

We're back from Boston yet again. We saw the endocrinologist this time, who had the pathologist's opinion on the original slides.

Whilst the slides were atypical they could not say for sure that there was any sign of cancer. The endocrinologist did an ultrasound and was a bit confused about which particular part of Mary's very inflamed thyroid gland her previous guy had biopsied, as there were a number of areas that looked like nodules but were more likely to be damage caused by the Hashimoto's disease.

He finally found an area that seemed to match with the description given and did another needle biopsy, taking five slides for study. Luckily he used a different technique from the other guy, causing Mary a lot less discomfort in the process.

Summing up, he has said that if these slides show anything out of the ordinary they will go ahead and remove the thyroid gland. However, there is a possible 10% danger, given the inflammation of the gland, of damage to nerves connected to the vocal chords, which are very close to the area. He's going to call her with the biopsy results in a few day's time, so we just have to keep on waiting.

Remember, Mary, they are plotting a road map for the best outcome. Remember how it took them five months before they would actually replace my valve? Every time I went in for a new test, they'd tell me we were one step closer. They even used the map analogy with Points of Interest being a heart cath (maybe two, I can't remember), 2 CAT scans, endoscopy, colonoscopy, xrays, myriad of blood tests, sleep tests, etc., etc.:-) It's a bitch, I know, but it is safest and will be good in the long run.

One last thought: my endocrinologist in Portland took the test results as gospel and made an appointment with a surgeon to have the thyroid removed. He (through his assistant ) seemed to be put out that the diagnosis was in question. I was told "We don't deal with the slides. Doctors don't question our diagnosis generally." Hence a two week delay in getting the slide to Boston.
In Boston, no rush to surgery and a genuine concern for my voice which is how I make my living. No voice; no job; no house.
I am frustrated with the time it is taking to figure this out but I am very grateful that these incredibly talented (and expensive) people are doing their best for me.
AND put in the perspective of others here who are dealing with life threatening illnesses and terrible losses, I apologize for being such a wimp.

It's a good sign for a surgeon to say he thinks you may not need surgery. Usually they're the ones pushing for it.

You're not a wimp, either. Everybody has their own crap to go through, and it's all different. We can help each other wade to the other side*, but we can't put the plastic suit on and wade through it for them. This is YOUR crap, Mary. Somebody else may have stinkier crap or bigger chunks, it may be deeper or thicker, it may have more fiber or little pieces of corn, but everybody's gotta go for a poop promenade at some point in their lives. This is yours, and you can bitch all you want to.

I've learned the people who take the best care of others (sound familiar?) often have tremendous ISSUES letting their guard down, admitting pain and fear, and letting others care for them.

But what a good feeling to let go, let yourself be cared for, even get tucked into bed once in a awhile, without actually giving up the pedestal for good.

Here's to you, sister. Wimp on.

It is said that Musashi contracted eczema in his infancy, and this adversely affected his appearance.[citation needed] Another story claims that he never took a bath because he did not want to be surprised unarmed. While the former claim may or may not have some basis in reality, the latter seems improbable.[9] An unwashed member of the warrior caste would not have been received as a guest by such famous houses as Honda, Ogasawara and Hosokawa. These and many other details are likely embellishments that were added to his legend, or misinterpretations of literature describing him.

*Sniff* if ya'd checked Wiki or maybe even "snopes" ya might've learned the dirt don't work, darlin'...remember all those communal baths in samurai movies? Maybe you're supposed to start bathing with friends!**bg**

Second (actually third) biopsy negative. It is official - I probably don't have cancer. Good enough for me. I was offered several options - another opinion (SIGH), surgery based on the original positive finding (BIG SIGH), careful monitoring with ultrasound not needle biopsies. That is my choice.
Thank you all for your support and kind offers of everything from money to cross country and international trips to keep me company. Thank you too to my incredibly supportive insurance company (can you believe it?) and the doctors and staff at Mass General.
