20 Feb 08 - 10:18 AM (#2267361) Subject: Tech: IPod Q&A From: wysiwyg The waterproof MP3 players I've depended upon for use underwater are becoming less available, and I think that soon they will disappear as other technologies are trumping them. On dry land, I like my Samsung player. New versions of that come along, but are pricey. Features I need are the same, both in water and on land. So I am increasingly curious about how Ipods may fit my purposes, but I don't have access to any to play with. My hope is that as Apple continues to soup up their technology, their earlier models may still be around for some time to come, cheap. 1. Which Ipod models store sound files in folders, and store them arranged in the folders by file name (not tag)? 2. Do Ipods have voice-record mics? And Yes - there are Microphones for iPod's - but there are problems, so I should do a Recording Equipment here on Mudcat as there is a lot of advise flying around. Tim Radford |

20 Feb 08 - 01:56 PM (#2267620) Subject: RE: Tech: IPod Q&A From: M.Ted You have to copy everything into your iTunes program, from whence you upload it to the iPod-- but then you can organize things into playlists/folders of whatever kind you want, then and upload them to the iPod. However, whether you want it or not, the iPod will also organize everything into Artist, Album, Genre, Song menus that you can pull down and search or simply shuffle. You can also upload photos, podcasts, and often, videos, depending on the model. One thing to note--you can upload to your iPod, but, for reasons known only to the Apple Marketing people, iTunes is set it up so you can't download from the iPod, so you have to keep everything that is on your iPod on your computer, as well. There is at least one program that you can get(though not from Apple) that allows you to download. There are also a lot of folks on the internet who dedicate their lives to finding ways to do what they want on the iPod. As a naturally cheap person, I have found that it is often a good idea to check the on-line Apple Store for "refurbished" stuff(which is often really "open box" or store demo)--it can sometimes be had for a tidy discount. However, I tend to follow the dictum "If it's not 50% off, it's not on sale." 16% off the original "new" list price for a refurb is not a deal. |

I have seen several even in our backwater, as well as reviews of others from other aquaticizers. I just haven't been ready to switch over from known toys to unknown ones before knowing what I will be getting. I'll have a look around my ITunes, from your tip-- I already use it to manage hockey podcasts. Obiviously, no case can be waterproof if you do it harm, but I figure if I watch for cheap IPods I can keep up with my carelessness. ~Susan |

And if they display any of those formats,, can they be magnified? Such as to put a graphic of a lyric page and then view it! |

Then you can either do shuffle play, or toggle a switch and play tracks in the exact order they are in the playlist. Those are the only two options. Note - You can move back and forth in the playlist without having to listen to every track. So if you put the tracks on alphabetically, for example, you could advance through the playlist to find what you want, but you would have to click on each track one at a time, in order, probably stopping every now and then to see what you're up to. Very tedious, and not very practical. If it otherwise meets your needs, the iPod Nano has a display and gives you full choices with your music, and is very lightweight. |

Supposedly one function of the thing is as a backup (I've got 80 gigs): what good is that if you can't retrieve stuff from it?? Or does that only apply to music? The original Shuffles could be used as a memory stick but music files playable within the device could be transferred only one way; onto the device and not from it. Designed to prevent piracy. But you generally can't download music to listen to from the iPod to the computer. Check this link for a detailed explanation of the difference and how to use your iPod this way. But, when you're connected to your computer, there's an icon on the desktop that opens to a normal Finder window (that's in Mac-speak: presumably something similar happens on a PC -- a regular file directory window can be opened.). Different folders (Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Recordings) show up there than appear in iTunes, and the Music, Video, etc. that you see in iTunes are invisible. I can copy a text file from my computer to the "Notes" folder in the Finder window, and then copy it back with no problem. I can also view the text on the iPod screen (although I can't figure out how to increase the font size...). So, that's where the other sorts of data go. There are of course various utilities available (not from Apple) for downloading the downloadable stuff, easily found via Google. ~ Becky in Tucson |

The first one will arrive soon, so I will be able to see how good Ebay stuff is with equipment that us familiar to me. And I will be able to put them in waterproof cases available locally. If they are really good I will save one as a personal backup for car use, and keep it dry and unfrozen. The rest will rotate as water units for students. It's actually an advantage to my planned use of these that copying music off of IPods is a no-no, but on the Samsungs it's a snap. ~Susan |
