I remember the shop next door to Woolworths in Cirencester where I bought it. It was a very brittle '78' which eventually got broken. The first '45' was "Living Doll" Cliff Richard 1959. cost 6s.8d. My parents were buying the same folk stuff that I liked when I was a youngster (Baez, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Ian & Sylvia, the Weavers, Judy Collins, etc), so I can't clearly recall who it was who bought those early albums in the first 10 years...me or them. But the first one I really can REMEMBER buying myself was Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited". That was tantamount to a revelation as far as I was concerned. I can clearly remember the first time I put it on the turntable and heard the opening chords of "Like A Rolling Stone". |

First 33 rpm was probably the Kingston Trio's First Album. Before that I had to get by on either things my folks bought me (Burl Ives) or things I borrowed from my brothers (The Weavers). I don't have any of the records any more (disappeared in the purge of '97) and I don't play 26 Miles any more, but I do occasionally play some of the Burl Ives, Weavers and Seeger songs from those early albums. Not so unusual until you consider that I didn't have a record player. But I said to myself, "when I get a record player, this is what I will listen to." So I used to carry it with me, to the language laboratory at Rhode Island College, and between studying French on the turntables that were available there, I would listen to The Stones. O.K. O.K. make that I would study French in between listening to The Stones...It was Mono and wonderful. I played it so much that it wore out. So I had to get another copy, but that was in Stereo. Not as good. Some of the raw power of the mono got lost. Everything prior to was on an 1960 Emerson radio. One of the first transistor radios, which I still have. Before that a 50's GE radio modded with an external car speaker so I could get "Stereo". Before that it was a crystal set. Oatmeal box, crystal, needle, headset, wired to the plumbing. Got New York from Rhode Island. Comparable to a lunar landing when you are 8-10 years old... But that first Stones record got me started in the Blues. That and all the Classic Rock&Roll(a lot with a country blend) from 1953 to the dawn of the 60's... bob |

I found a second-hand shop that sold singles at a price just about affordable on a pocket-money budget, and that was the first one I found there that I liked. |

Theme from "CaptainZeppos" (Living It Up) I used to watch the "Captain Zeppos" series on TV when I should have been studying, couldn't get the tune out of my head and some kind soul at the BBC eventually told me what it was. My first record was "I Walk the Line" by Johnny Cash, 78 RPM. I didn't know it at the time but Mr. Cash's mom attended my uncle's Southern Baptist Church in Ventura CA at about this time. I was in Delano CA about a hundred miles away. It was only years later that I learned about it. Seems my family was never too impressed with celebrity! My uncle (the Pastor) said that Johnny would slip in after services had started and would exit before they were over. The reason for this, I suppose, was to avoid dispruting the proceedings and out of respect for the House of Prayer. |

My parents did. I loved that record. I think that one of my very early purchases may have been a 45 of the Chipmunks (Alvin, Simon, and Theodore) singing their classic "Alvin's Harmonica"!!! Wow, eh? ;-) Or my mother may have bought it for me. Not quite sure about that. I now see that it was a harbinger of things to come..."Alvin's Harmonica" was clearly an omen of my future long and abiding interest in Bob Dylan! (heh!) |

Just prior to this (I think) my mother bought me "The Peppermint Twist" by Joey Dee and the Starlighters and "The Twist" by Chubby Checker. First LP was by Andy Williams. My primary record player was a circa 1953 top of the line RCA given to me by an uncle. It only played 45s. I had to wait (even after buying that first LP) to get a record player that would play 33 RPM -- and it, of course, also played 45s and 78s. I'm old, right? Linn |

I did not own a turntable until about 1966, and it is unlikely that I bought any records before then, tho I owned some, probably given me by my mother, and played them on other people's turntables. However, in the '60s I had a friend of the I-can-get-it-for-you-wholesale religion, and he importuned me to buy a turntable for my lo-fi thru him, and even offered to fix it so I could play mono records on it (at that time, I thought stereo recording was fashionable frippery; I continued to buy mono records as long as they remained available). Naturally, I hesitated; but then it occurred to me that if I owned a turntable, I could listen to Bob Dylan any time I wanted. So I gave in. That makes it very likely that the first record I bought was an early Bob Dylan one. |

Actually I didn't buy 'Blue for You' exactly - I swapped it for a pair of jelly sandals - and I hadn't heard it but I had kind of slightly heard of Status Quo because I had written their logo, along with those of a lot of other bands whose music I didn't know, on my school bag. Saw later versions of the LP and she had a dress painted over her. Turns out the 'nude' one is worth quite a bit in the 'collector's market'. First 78 that I actually bought with my own money. Patsy Montana - Good Night Soldier/Smile And Drive Your Blues Away Decca 6101 (Blue Label). I bought it used for about 25 cents in maybe 1951. You can have your very own copy for about $24 with postage at ebay, I just looked it up. Most of my other 78 purchases were of Hank Snow, beginning with The Golden Rocket. First 45, having a bit of trouble remembering for sure, as there was a period in which I jumped back and forth between 78s and 45s, but I am fairly certain that it was The Louvin Brothers 45 set of Tragic Songs Of Life. First LP, no problem there, Hank Snow Just Keep A-Movin' RCA Victor LPM-1113 1955. First CD, that's easy too. Nanci Griffith, her first album on MCA, Lone Star State of Mind (1987). and yes I bought that at least a couple of months before I had a CD player. I had no faith that MCA would keep it in the catalog long enough to risk not getting it. Obviously, I was wrong. |

It was all 78s. When I was in my very early teens, I went regularly to Saturday matinee movies, usually with my sister (good way for mom to get us out of the house). The second feature of the double bill was often a western (maybe Hopalong Cassidy) or a crime drama (i.e., "film noir"), but frequently the main feature was one of the musical movies that were coming out of Hollywood at the time. Some of them were 90% fictional "Hollywoodized" bio-pics of some musician or composer. I got to liking some of the music that I heard in these movies, and after seeing "A Song to Remember" (1945 - Cornel Wilde as Chopin), I bought Jose Iturbi's recording of Chopin's Polonaise in Ab, which actually made the pop-charts shortly after the movie came out (Itubi did the piano playing in the movie while Cornel Wilde "finger-synced"). I think that was the first record I bought with my own money. I bought a lot of classical music, mostly stuff I had heard first in movies like the aforementioned, and opera recordings (weird kid, I suppose - but I also had an album of "Sons of the Pioneers"). But when I first got interested in folk music and bought my first guitar ($9.95 Regal), I went to Campus Music and Gallery in Seattle's University District and bought Walt Robertson's two 78s, and one 10" LP each by Burl Ives, Richard Dyer-Bennet, Susan Reed, and Cynthia Gooding. About 5 years later I bought a second record, Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water LP on the first day it was released. I spent the grocery money on it, and lived on beans and rice for weeks after that. It was another odd thing to buy since I still didn't have a record player, but Simon and Garfunkel started going to parties with me and Ray Charles and that was fun. I've had a Kingston Trio EP with "Tom Dooley" on it for a long long time, so that was probably my first 45. My First album was "The Buddy Holly Story", in common with a few others on here. From: Janie 1st albums bought for me (and my younger sister) were Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas album, and a Huckleberry Hound dog album. The first album I remember buying (probably we three sisters combined our resources) was Chubby Chekkers, but it could have been something else. I don't really remember having any money of my own to buy anything other than 45's before I went to college - and even then, funds were very scarce. Mom and Dad liked music and bought the first stereo in our neck of the woods -the speakers were major pieces of furniture in those days. Mom had a great, eclectic collection of 78's (that my neatnick Dad trashed at some point) and 45's before then that we listened to on a humble mono turntable- .don't remember most of them, but they included the Andrews sisters, Patsy Cline, Elvis Presley, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Andy Griffin, early Everly Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis. Johnny Horton, etc. There may have been some early Buddy Holly. For no particular reason, I remember a 45 my Mom had of a rock & roll song "They Call Me Hawkeye" and I can not, for the life of me, remember who did it. I am the keeper of the family albums that have survived. (Survival and playability are not synonyms.) In terms of albums, I am never clear about what Mom bought "for us girls" (her excuse - she loved rock 'n roll and loved to dance. She'd set up the ironing board in the living room Saturday mornings so she could watch American Bandstand while she ironed - taking frequent breaks to dance and to teach us, especially my older sister, how to lindy, jitterbug, etc.), and the early purchases we made for ourselves. |

His father bought him a couple LPs -- Ewan MacColl and A.L. Lloyd. The die was cast. I was talking to Jeri yesterday about the thread. She talked about the recordings her mother had and it got me thinking. Until they started buying ME records (45s -- including story records like "Bambi" -- couldn't listen to the second side where Bambi's mother dies), there were no recordings around the house. Lots of MUSIC around the house, but no recordings. My father had played clarinet and sax in a dance band in north-central Wisconsin in the '40s and still played a lot at home in Milwaukee (though a second shift job kept him from playing professionally). My mother played piano and we didn't have one, so she'd hijack my accordion when I was taking lessons (at age 5). We later (in the '60s) got a piano. My brother played trumpet, my sister played piano. I took those accordion lessons, then clarinet lessons and played with the school band. We all sang -- at home, at church, in the car, together or alone. (Lutherans, fer-pete's-sake.) I learned harmony by osmosis and didn't realize it til about 25 years ago. Polkas were the folk music of my youth -- Wisconsin, doncha know. But no records around the house until I started buying them or they were purchased for me. Strange, now that I think about it. Linn |

I suspect that might be true for lots of us, Linn. I was for me. We had a piano that none of us could play (Wertheim upright with 3 pedals; I never did work out the function of the third pedal) but the bloke next door would often visit and he could accompany almost anything we cared to sing, so there were a lot of songs sung; G&S, popular from the 1890s through to the 1950s would cover the most of them, although there were quite a few "scout songs' that were originally English folk songs. I went and pulled it out of the bookcase so I could be specific about it, because it was so good and still is. Bit of an oddity but great: Bob Atcher, Early American Folk Songs, Columbia 10" HL 9006, one of the first LPs, issued c. 1950. Included: Barbary Allen, De Ladies' Man, Methodist Pie, Devilish Mary, Young Rogers the Miller, Old Smoky, The Hunters of Kentucky Atcher, son of a fiddle champion father, began as a working cowboy in North Dakota. He became a successful country singer on radio and records during the 1930s and 40s, particularly in his duets with Bonnie Blue Eyes. He was staff vocalist at WBBM in Chicago in the early 40s. But he put away all the fancy studio backing and professionalized singing for this record (and for one other, a 10" of cowboy songs, also on Columbia). On this LP he goes all the way back to his roots with bone-simple authentic singing, fine fetching traditional style fingerpicking guitar, and some terrific songs. I would have bought the Armsatrong Hot 5s and 7s but the shop didn't have it. Went on to buy far too many LPs, CDs, piano rolls and cassettes since (according to the current Mrs S.),new and second hand, from shops, by post and online. I CAN be cured, send conmtributions NOW! First record, not my money (well I was ill in bed) Alfven's Swedish Rhapsody, arr. percy Faith. The BBC has been using it as the signature tune for a children's tv prog, c.'53.
