Try this - it'll drive you crazy. And the interesting thing is how often you can get the right answer on the basis of knowing zilch. "Multiple choice" is a doddle if you know how to play the game.

Since a lot've the words are American usage, I find the given options a little different to general British English definitions

A lot of the words are not really in use at all, except in unusual circumstances. They're sitting there all neglected in particularly comprehensive dictionaries.

.........& some've the spellings are unfamiliar -

'Hajj' = pilgrimage to Mecca

I've on seen this ever spelled 'Hadj'

Yup, I've been addicted to this for ages. I'm hovering around 7000 or so,mainly because by now I'm recognizing most of the words, so it's not as much fun. ;)

Variant spelling, not mispelling.

Oh, thanks for my new addiction! Sheesh! I just got to 7000 grains and it started me all over, so I guess that's the limit? Anyway, lots of fun. I knew Latin classes would come in handy someday! How many grains in a bag of rice, anwyay?

Harpmolly: glad it's got you too.
Pleased that this has hooked some of you; it does seem to be genuine and is fun. I agree about the variant spellings, but then if they come round again you can recognise them.Picked up a few words handy for Scrabble!

I got addicted to this last year. being canadian, I'm usually passing familiar with both American and British spelling and usage, so I generally clean up in this game. ;-p

How long does this bloody thing go on for?
I'm on 2460 grains of rice and it is showing no sign of stopping and letting me get on with what I'm supposed to be doing.
Quack!

I daresay a scientific background is a big help, as at least half of wht I've clicked on are either medical or descriptive words used when identifying plants or animals.
That said, at 3440 grains, I am getting bored and it is starting to repeat words.
Quack!

Yes, I learned that one from Mudcat about a month ago - it's pronounced Gooey Duck, apparently.
I like the Kitty Wake, though!

It's a great site, it's very addictive. But I don't get the thing about the rice. I mean, surely it would be easier to just go to the shop and buy a bag of rice and send it somewhere?

Subject: RE: BS: Try Free rice for charity

But the rice comes from a damn sight closer to where it will be sent. Why ship it to USA/UK/Germany then ship it back half way across the World. CARBON FOOTPRINT...

It's an ingenious idea, really...use the banner ads to generate the money to buy the rice. Way to use your thinkin' box, people! :)

A bag of rice would cost more to post than to buy. This way is more fun and more effective.

skive means:

transmit

For me, none of the options!

skive: 1 to pare or split leather
2 to evade a duty, work etc
fascinating to find words such as begorra and snickersnee there; quite a few musical terms, instrument names too
