Mike & Marg www.cbchoices.commike.little@ns.sympatico.ca   Begin forwarded message: From: "Phill McIntyre" Date: February 20, 2008 11:23:59 PM ASTSubject: Jerry Holland to play The Skye on Wed, March 5th We have put together a very special benefit show for Jerry Holland on March 5th Jerry will be joined on stage by several Maine musicians including: Don and Cindy Roy; Ellen Gawler; Frank Ferrel; Bill Scott; Mairi Rankin; and step dancer Bob McCormick. 100% of the ticket sales will go to help Jerry with his medical bills. This promises to be a very exciting evening with fiddlers and musicians coming from all over Maine. The pre-show jam will be bursting at the seams with wonderful players and step dancers. Don't miss this great show. We have an opportunity to extend Mairi Rankin's tour with Jerry. She has agreed to stay in Maine a few extra days and will present a workshop here at the Skye on Sunday March 9 at 3:00 PM followed by a show at 7:00PM. Please plan to attend, I understand she may have some friends show up for the Sunday night show so a real Cape Breton kitchen party will likely brake out. Please sign up for both of these concerts asap. The workshop fee will be $20.00 and will start at 3:00 on Sunday afternoon. We have had two meetings with the Friends of The Skye to discuss the expansion plans. Many great suggestions were offered and plans are moving forward to start on the expansion in the next couple of weeks. More on that and what you can do to help your Favorite Celtic Theatre in a separate news letter in a week or so. Thanks to all who participated in the think sessions, your observations were very much appreciated . Below is a recent press release on the upcoming Jerry Holland show. Jerry Holland tribute and fund-raiser at Skye. New England Celtic Arts will present a tribute and fund raiser for Cape Breton fiddle ledged Jerry Holland at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center on Wednesday March 5th, 2008 in So. Carthage, Maine starting at 7:00 PM. Jerry will be joined on stage by Maine fiddle greats Don Roy; Ellen Gawler; and Frank Ferrel along with special guests Mairi Rankin and Cindy Roy. A pre-show jam will start at 6:30 PM. One of the finest Celtic fiddlers performing today, Jerry comes by his music honestly. His father was a musical man respectful of tradition. Jerry senior was over 50 when Jerry was born and this placed the budding musician directly into a vibrant older culture. From childhood on, a series of fortunate events put young Jerry in the company of many of the greatest Cape Breton musicians of the last generation - -Winston Fitzgerald, Bill Lamey, Angus Chisholm and several other less well-known fiddlers, including his father. Jerry Senior also had an interest in Irish music and he passed on repertoire to Jerry, including music learned from the 78s of Coleman, Morrison, Killoran, and Cape Breton fiddler Johnny Wilmot. For the past 25 years, life in Cape Breton has surrounded him by people who know and love the music. Digesting those experiences, a mature musician and composer has evolved. Today, his settings of older tunes and his own compositions usually pass the muster with the traditionalists. For the last year Jerry has been battling bone cancer with very expensive post-operative treatments and medications. Not to mention the interruption of dates scheduled that had to be canceled. The influence Jerry has had on the lives of both musicians and Celtic music fans in Maine is inestimable. Fans all over the world have been gathering together to lend support. This is the first such show organized in Maine. Maine fiddle master Don Roy will be the host for the evening. Other guests such as Ellen Gawler, Frank Ferrel, Mairi Rankin, Jay Young, and Cindy Roy will be involved in this tribute to Jerry. A minimum donation of $10.00 or more is suggested. 100% of the ticket sales will be donated to Jerry. Skye Theatre is located 3 miles West of East Dixfield village at 2 Highland Drive off Winter Hill Rd and US RT. 2 in South Carthage. Ticket price is $10.00 at the door. Reservations are required for this show. Call New England Celtic Arts at (207) 562-4445 for reservations and directions. I haven't heard much lately but he is playing the Cape Breton dance and ceilidh circuit so hopefully that means that he is doing well.
