It does have two electric blue and purple areas but still photography does not capture the movement of color in opal. I have several pounds of this stuff to cut up and polish into opal design rocks. I am auctioning a 1,800 necklace I made that is true picture opal. The opal takes the shape of a geisha dancing in flowing silks. It is rare for an opal to look like a person, in fact I have never seen one before. http://images.channeladvisor.com/Sell/SSProfiles/10060508/Images/YA34838-1.jpg I found out that Hackmanite is white when it is exposed to light but turns raspberry red when you put it in the dark or blast it with UV light. Lots of it come from Russia while the ebay sample is from Burma. I wonder if my step grandfather Hackman from Russia had anything to do with naming this rock ;<| |

I'd sit there with all my mates - the other breeze blocks (deemed unworthy by the poshocracy and Prince Charles). And people would say - that idiot could been the rock in St Ives bay with waves crashing over him, and the most beautiful view in the world. But he chose to be breeze block, cos he couldn't break free of his environment and shit upbringing. But I wouldn't care, I would enjoy a laugh with my mates and sing dirty songs to keep myself amused. Some of us would rather make our own unique contribution, than be looked down on with condescension by the Tate Gallery and all the bloody boring trappings of the English establishment. |

Perhaps Herkimer quartz, or maybe something with a hint of mystery like the Phantom quartz they pick up in Arkansas. Not necessary to die to obtain either type. :) SRS A died in the wool rockhound, as demonstrated by the rocks all over the house and some pitched out into the garden after a while. |

Have you ever done much with malachite or lapis lazuli? Those are two of my favs. along with amethyst and amber, though of course the latter is not technically a rock/stone. I've always loved rocks. When we moved when I was 8, I was very angry at my parents for throwing out my box of rocks! I have a tray of treasures which sit in front of my kitchen window, now, as well as various "chunks" throughout the house. |

The room itself has been in the news lately because a fellow found an old war-time journal from a father or grandfather with coordinates of a bunker that may have been built to hide museum loot, including some of the Amber Room). Donuel, I am glad you posted the ebay link. You've got some beautiful work on there. I can see the dancing lady much more clearly in those photos. Thank you. I will have to post a link to a 2 inch circle which was part of a larger painting my grandson did when he was only about 2.5 or 3. I looked closely at the circle, enlarged it, using the scanner, and other people saw what I saw...a hut with geishas or men in kimonos, pine trees on red sandstone hills like we have around here and something like a banshee hanging out above it all on the right. I am sure it was not conscious on his part, but I do think it may have come through from past life or just his imagination. Who knows? I'll dig it out and get it scanned in, again, and put a link in. The colours are somewhat similar to your opal. |
