Woody Guthrie: One Man Show

In the early eighties I saw a show in L.A. by a fellow...I believe his name was Tom Taylor....personifying Woody Guthrie. It was excellent. I was wondering if it is still being performed or if it was ever taped or anything and what happened to the guy?

I asked this same question several times in other threads here---to no avail. Good luck. I'll be watching too.

I don't know,'bout him, but we have a wonderful event (songs, readings, slides) every July 'round about Woody's Birthday. I'll ask Mark Greenberg, the organizer of the event here, if he's heard of this person.

Is that the Mark Greenberg who hung out at the U. of Chicago Folk Fest in the very early 60's? Friends with and played with Bob Hoban & Andy Sacker etc.? If so, give him my regards!!

Hmmm, I honestly don't know. I'll give him your regards and see what happens.

There IS a Woody Guthrie One Man Show coming up right about now or in the next few days in Burbank of Pasadena, CA. I met the man who co-wrote it and is the one playing Woody. But I cannot find any information about it on the web. Anybody out there who can fill me in? The actor/writer's name was Rob.

There has been a one man Woody Guthrie show going on for years and still is right now wherever Rambling Jack Elliot is appearing, and that will be in the UK very shortly.

Topic Records in London recorded Jack reading from Woody's book and singing the songs way back in the late 50's. Perhaps Tony Engle could be persuaded to re-issue it.

Woody has become an icon. I remember him from my days in Topanga Canyon.
The mythologizing of a person is inherent in the popularity that they have.

I remember when "This Land Is Your Land" was just considered another song.
Nothing special.

The danger in One Man Shows is that all kinds of stuff is added to it that really didn't
happen.

Guest.Sioux-

You can find info on the One Man Show with Rob Tepper playing Woody at

Not sure when he's going to do the show again but he just performed it at Santa Clara University last month...

I'm guessing they're traveling around the country, or if not...they should be

There's a good chance that there is more than one show out there. I know there was a guy in north Texas that did a one man tribute to Woody. His name may have been Williamson. I'll see if I can find out something more.

The fellow yall are talking about is Tom Taylor. Tom Currently resides in Belton Texas. Tom is still performing and in fact I just performed with him last night at Kinky Freidmans Smoking Lounge in Salado Texas. He did several of his Woody Guthrie tunes and is also a great story teller. His link is here. http://tomtaylorplus.com/index.php?page=about-me
