06 Mar 08 - 04:47 AM (#2280964) Subject: RE: A.L.Lloyd and EwanMacColl on my space From: The Sandman but their music is not dead.their singing lives on. It reminds me of the song the outside track. The Carter Family are on there as is Paul Robeson,Frank Proffitt,RoscoeHolcomb, and other sky giggers. I suggested to Rosemary Tawney to put Cyrils work up. |
06 Mar 08 - 06:25 AM (#2281008) Subject: RE: A.L.Lloyd and EwanMacColl on my space From: matt milton I'm in two minds about all these supposed "fansite" myspace pages. There's something a bit wrong about there being a Ewan MacColl myspace page. Somehow I doubt he'd have had a myspace page if he were still alive. Can't really imagine him signing up with a Newscorp-owned (Murdoch-owned) enterprise. (Reminds me of an awful TV advert from a few years back in the pratty DJ Chris Evans was teleported into bed between John & Yoko, via manipulation of stock footage, in order to shift some mobile phones. Horrible to think how peoples legacy can be co-opted so easily.) And a lot of those "fansite" pages seem a little disingenuous – kudos by proxy. (I play the blues and guess what, Robert Johnson is my friend!.) Reading those 'thanks for the add' and 'I really love your music' is really bizarre. Then again, some of them are done with a sense of humour: leaving messages on fellow dead musicians pages in character; and listing their "hobbies and interests". And it is good to be able to hear their music. |

06 Mar 08 - 08:08 AM (#2281087) Subject: RE: A.L.Lloyd and EwanMacColl on my space From: The Sandman Matt,In my opinion there is nothing wrong with being able to hear the music of people who are dead,or who no longer play[Nic Jones]. It reminds us of their music ,and brings their music to the attention of new people. as far as I know no one criticised Jeanette Carter[AP and Saras daughter]for setting up a venue for people to listen to Carter Family music in their valley.she regarded it as a shrine to her parents, I cant see any difference,I see it as away of honouring Ewan and Bert, the Carter Family,Roscoe Holcomb, Frank Profitt,Clarence Ashley,Paul Robeson and hopefully introducing their music to others. 06 Mar 08 - 03:26 PM (#2281473) Subject: RE: A.L.Lloyd and EwanMacColl on my space From: The Mole Catcher's Apprentice (inactive) "Ewan MacColl myspace page." "Can't really imagine him signing up with a Newscorp-owned (Murdoch-owned) enterprise." Neither can I, and I somehow can't see Ewan MacColl approving either...but there again Billy Bragg has, so........ A.L.Lloyd, I must admit, I don't really care about. 06 Mar 08 - 03:42 PM (#2281487) Subject: RE: A.L.Lloyd and EwanMacColl on my space From: Gene Burton Less well known musicians include the pages for famous and often dead performers in their myspace "top friends" list as a matter of routine. Among younger users (which I imagine comprises the vast majority of myspace-ers) it's generally recognised as a method to signal where one's coming from musically, providing some kind of recognisable context to their own efforts-nothing to do with claiming any kind of direct personal connection with the (ex-) performers concerned. Of course, music myspace originally grew out of the personal networking side of it, hence the heading "Friends", which I agree is somewhat anachronistic...I'd prefer "Links", but then again I of course don't run myspace (wouldn't need to advertise my gigs or try to flog CDs if I did!) You can find links to Leadbelly, Jake Thackray and Nick Drake among others on mine |
