Some of the pages have spaces embedded in them and with those, a text browser needs to replace those with %20 for each of those spaces or it won't work. |

In particular, it looks like they've added several of the reference books available from google and archive as web pages, which is handy if you haven't the bandwidth for downloading them (I think I've got about 2Gb of downloaded books - mostly 19thC but some 20thC). I and others put a lot of energy making English Fiddlers tunebooks available free on the Village Music Project website. And this person has taken them (1000s of tunes)straight off us with never a word of please or thank you and offered them FOR SALE on his website. If you are casually searching the web for a particular tune or song, issues of the provenance of the transcription(*) aren't necessarily a priority compared to issues of availability and accuracy. Google doesn't distinguish between the original transcriber and the secondary sites. But people (myself included, although none of my stuff seems to have been assimilated into this particular Borg Cube) put a lot of time and effort into creating online versions of this material for free reference use. Content creators are then entitled to feel more than a little bit disgruntled if someone hoovers up that free content, tries to make money off of it, and doesn't even bother to properly acknowledge the original sources. (*) I am of course here purely talking about transcriptions of traditional music. IP, ownership and copyright in original works is an entirely different fish of kettles). |

I can't imagine he makes much money selling CDs of fiddle tunes, but at least he makes it available and gets compensated for the hassle of sending somebody a personal copy. As I see it, folk music is community property - property the community has an obligation to preserve and share with anybody who wants it. If I compile folk music information and post it, I don't really care how somebody uses it. It's nice if they give me credit, but I don't mind if they fail to. Most of the information I compile and disseminate comes from other sources. I try to give credit when I can. I suppose you could say that most of the music information posted at Mudcat is plagiarism - but it serves to preserve and to share the music. This is not saleable material we're dealing with here - nobody loses or gains any material benefit from the information posted on folk music Websites. So, I take a word of advice from my patron saint, Alfred E. Neuman:

But I get a little peeved when someone's contribution to a transcription is merely to strip out the name of the transcriber, and then put it on their website as their own work. That happens often enough but at least the stuff is being made freely available. But offering someone else's work for sale when it is meant to be available free? I consider that to be immoral. |

19 Jul 09 - 12:59 AM (#2683164) Subject: RE: Traditional music library website From: Joe Offer I've spent the last couple of days working with Linux software, admiring all the wonderful stuff that is available free of charge, with no attempt to claim credit for the many pieces of cooperative effort that go into this wonderful stuff. It made me think that's one thing that computers and humans can do very well together - cooperative research for the sheer love of it. Look at Wikipedia, look at Mudcat - they have their flaws, but they are the extraordinary outcome of community effort. But yeah, it does help to give credit when it's due. We have a number of books and other resources posted here at Mudcat, and we do try hard to give credit to the people who do the work. -Joe- |
