07 Mar 08 - 08:27 PM (#2282579) Subject: RE: BS: As Long as We're Dealing with Basics From: Bert Hmmmm. Reminds me of when I was a kid. A friend gave Mum and Dad an old Banjo. It didn't have any strings. I was really keen to learn to play it, but Mum said she would buy some strings when I learned to play it. Catch 22 before the term was invented. They sold it, I guess to pay for food for the family, but I still haven't forgiven them. |

It was thirty years later before I could afford to buy a guitar. Thats a big chunk of music I lost. I would have sooner gone hungry for a few days. |

The person who gave me the old Stella (which I painted with a kitchen enamel and it didn't change the sound one iota) for a few bucks has a place in both my heart and memory. I have been writing lots lately after 25 years of not, and I am very sorry I ever stopped. I DO understand about lost years. Great to see you posting again, Bert. |

07 Mar 08 - 10:35 PM (#2282650) Subject: RE: BS: As Long as We're Dealing with Basics From: Bee-dubya-ell Whether to hold a guitar string side in or string side out depends entirely on how one's fingers are attached to one's body. People whose fingers are attached to their hands generally find it best to use a string-side-out orientation. People whose fingers are attached to some part of their bodies other than their hands may be more comfortable with the string-side-in approach. |

07 Mar 08 - 10:43 PM (#2282657) Subject: RE: BS: As Long as We're Dealing with Basics From: catspaw49 My best suggestion is to not buy strings OR a guitar and simply buy the soundhole. These are often available for considerably less than an entire guitar. If you want, spend a few more bucks and get a set of f-holes so you can alternate. Spaw |

08 Mar 08 - 12:01 AM (#2282690) Subject: RE: BS: As Long as We're Dealing with Basics From: catspaw49 Geeziz Beedub.....Anybody can get a new Martin soundhole but who wants it? The really valuable ones are the vintage ones and you pay through the nose for them. Some folks say they can't tell the difference but you can. Take a soundhole that's spent the past 60 or 70 years in front of Brazilian rosewood and surrounded with pre-war Sitka and you can tell the difference right off. Spaw |

08 Mar 08 - 10:39 AM (#2282877) Subject: RE: BS: As Long as We're Dealing with Basics From: Rapparee Being extremely versatile, I play the guitar AND the banjo by laying them strings-side-down in my lap. I would prefer not to explain my patented picking technique any further lest it be stolen by one of you unscrupulous pric...gentlemen. There's also the matter of the order from the Health Department, but I'm appealing that. |
