Qualified To Be a Folkie?

10 Mar 08 - 07:59 AM (#2284199)
Subject: QUALIFIED TO BE A FOLKIE?
From: GUEST,Alan Surtees

I just thought it would be interesting to explore exactly what our expectations are of anyone who may be described as a folkie. It would be good to understand the UK perception and those of our colleagues from the USA and Canada, in fact, anywhere.

And just to make it fun (with just a pinch of mischief) I will offer a few possible questions to discover those who really qualify. At the end of this thread I think we should find a panel to consider entries and they should put forward their suggestions for: "Folkie of the Year 2008". It would also be good to have a way of formally recognising qualified folkies, perhaps a badge a little like the MacDonalds badge with a fully qualified folkie having five pint pots (other suggestions welcome). So, what questions do we need to ask to find those answers which define a folkie?

What sort of Folk Music should a real folkie listen to?
What sort of, so called, Folk Music should a real folkie not listen to?
What does a real folkie drink?
What sort of car would a folkie drive, if any?
What sort of house would a folkie live in?
Do real folkies need to be computer and internet experts?
Folkie Dress Code?
Political leaning?
Sexual Orientation? (Bluegrass fans can ignore this one)
Formal Educational Qualifications?
What hobbies do real folkies have?
What is the ideal form of employment for a folkie?
Should folkies be Morris Dancers?
Married or single?
Could a folkie ever be considered a real folkie without a tankard?

Have fun, try not to be too serious and please add more qualifications of your own. We will then discover what it means to be a real folkie.

All the Best

Alan

Field recordings of bonny sailors and trusty farmhands.
The Spinners or Fivepenny Piece.
Raw scrumpy or real ale only. (Mead is allowed at Christmas).
An ecologically soundly produce bicycle.
A farmhand's tied cottage.
Computers?
Rustic, with a small, unnecessary red scarf.
Loyal to whichever charlatan claims to embody trusty, old fashioned values.
Gay.
The university of life. Formal qualifications are not allowed.
Walking with fair wenches, sailing the salty sea etc...
Ideally a horny handed toiler upon the land.
Of course.
Married.
Certainly not!

Any music you like to listen to as it all originates from 'Folk' music anyway.
Drinks water to stay alive, otherwise a good glass of any make of 'real ale' will do.
A real folkie would ride a horse but I guess a Nissan will do.
He/she lives wherever they lay their hat.
Experts only if they lay their hat on a computer.
Dresses in beatnik style clothing....as in the 60's
Leans on Political posters.
Sexual orientation...definitely.
Educated by life and nature...qualified to comment on anything.
Hobbies...woodturning...antiques and collectables...crafts.
Ideal employment...loads of paid gigs.
Morris dancers if they want to be.
They should certainly be married or single.
You can get pissed without a tankard!!!!!
ALSO:-
Needs to be able to sing with teeth clenched.
Needs to be able to harmonise...especially with songs about 'good ale'
Will preferably have a head, body, legs, arms and all the bits and pieces that go with them but anyone without any of these parts will be acceptable.
Preferably able to handle a bodhran or banjo.... ability to throw it in a river or crush it with bare hands essential.
Be able to sleep on a clothes line or telegraph pole at festivals without falling off whilst under the affluence of incahol.
Must have a party trick such as being able to dislocate a shoulder or hip (best for those unable to sing or play)

Based on a long observation of Mudcatters...

What sort of Folk Music should a real folkie listen to? What is folk? (...no, please do not answer this)
What sort of, so called, Folk Music should a real folkie not listen to? Ani DiFranco
What does a real folkie drink? Strong ale or strong scrumpy (depending on orientation but not a G&T or sweet sherry at any rate)
What sort of car would a folkie drive, if any? His or her partner's (if said partner is not a real folkie as well...)
What sort of house would a folkie live in? An exceedingly untidy one
Do real folkies need to be computer and internet experts? Yes... in order to debate what folk is, what the folk process is, whether the folk process is dead, etc. (ad infinitum)
Folkie Dress Code? A suitable collection of out-of-date and ill-fitting, yet practical garments
Political leaning? Strongly to the left or strongly to the right (or both simultaneously... lurk in the centre is not permittted)
Sexual Orientation? (Bluegrass fans can ignore this one) Yes please
Formal Educational Qualifications? Nowadays... a least a Batchelor' degree (... higher with specialisation is preferable to participate in the "What is Folk?", etc. debates)
What hobbies do real folkies have? Drinking, sex, debating "What is Folk?", Pagan interests
What is the ideal form of employment for a folkie? Librarian, teacher, archaeologist, herb grower, university professor
Should folkies be Morris Dancers? If it keeps them off debating "What is...?" etc., why not
Married or single? Separated or divorced
Could a folkie ever be considered a real folkie without a tankard? A tankard would be compulsory for real folkies of a English singing bent, together with the regulation battered hat and small book with even smaller writing (otherwise optional)

Must we really do this again? Oh, if you insist--

(1) Whatever he/she likes to listen to and can be inspired by.
(2) Whatever he/she doesn't enjoy listening to.
(3) Silly question.
(4) Silly question.
(5) Silly question.
(6) Sure. How else are you going to get lyrics, tunes, etc. But "expert?" No such thing. An "expert" is only an expert in what he/she knows. Ponder that. Oh, and how else are you going to get the latest raft of filth which is supposed to be funny or how else are you going to get dissed for ignoring the possibility that during certain phases of the moon, A# is not Bb? If you weren't computer literate, and couldn't pass time posting on the 417th thread playing at a definition of folk music, you might accidentally turn on Oprah and end up voting for Barack "I'm on Fire" Obama.
(7) Silly question.
(8) Silly question. You don't have to have voted for William Jennings Bryan to like folk music, though it might help.
(9) Hetero sapiens.
(10) Music as a hobby might help. Eventually they might invest enough time in it to learn a major scale. Beating dogs is fun too; Whoopie Goldberg says that's ok.
(11) You should be able to count the number of notes in an octave and frets on your guitar. Not to worry; we seem to have waived that requirement in a couple of cases I could mention. But won't. Gentleman. Ha! Pig's ear.
(12) Whatever gets you six figures, per diem and a company car. Me, I'm still working on that part.
(13) Absolutely! And every open mic should include a shtick that starts, "This is my interpretation of a potted geranium." Alternative answer: I'm having trouble learning to dance like a cat.
(14) If the majority votes "single," do I need to get a divorce? Silly question.
(15) I hope so. My most frequent open mic is in a dry hole. Number two is staffed by such blunted waitresses that your chances of getting a tankard, let alone enough tankards to ever get tanked, are slim to none. The only other place I've ever been moved to perform was one where the brew flowed freely, but after the last shooting incident I sort of dropped that one off my gig list.

There. That's the best I can do.

As I see it, "Folk Music" is an ancient term that is no longer relevent. Originally, the term was applied to songs that were learned and sung in the oral tradition by the people, as opposed to, say, opera, or other songs that were impossible for most people to sing (The Star Spangled Banner), That was before written songs were common. Anyone with a voice could sing "The Fox", one of the oldest songs in the English language.

So, I guess any song that is sung by the common people could be considered a folk song. Just don't ask me to accept Achey Breakey Heart, or I love a rainy night as a folk song!

BTW, Mr. Bridge, it is my understanding that both Jack Daniels and Wild Turkey are made mostly from maize, not rye. Perhaps the bluegrassers could weigh in on this one. But anyone singing lumberjack songs would be well-advised to tank up on Canadian Club, which is made from rye with the addition of a small amount of propylene glycol to keep it from freezing when shipped by rail.

Unfortunately for this debate, refusing to qualify for anything they don't have to is a strong folkie trait.

In the interest of the common good, folkies are willing to register to vote and to study the driver's manual. After that, it's a free-for-all.

What sort of house would a folkie live in?

A--The dog house. Then he can sing the blues.

Do real folkies need to be computer and internet experts?

A--What's a computer?

Folkie Dress Code?

A--It's up to the individual. I do not look good in a dress. (Someday I will explain that.)

Political leaning?

A--A bit to the left, but when that is view by a viewer, the viewer's view will depend on which way the folkie is leaning.

Sexual Orientation? (Bluegrass fans can ignore this one)

A--Sheep.

Formal Educational Qualifications?

A--I don't understand the question. It's about school, right?

What hobbies do real folkies have?

A--Sheep.

What is the ideal form of employment for a folkie?

A--Independently wealthy. No need for that.

Should folkies be Morris Dancers?

A--Definitely not. If all folkies were named Morris Dancers, we'd never know who was booked at gigs.

Married or single?

A--For sure.

Could a folkie ever be considered a real folkie without a tankard?

A--That's a military weapon. This seems to be a very odd question.

It's about what you wore to the prom, Peace. Did you wear a tux, tails and top hat, or overalls with brass buckles?

No, Mr. Bridge.

I don't play that song. You obviously are referring to the Merle Haggard song Okie from Muskokee which was a giant hit and actually rates as a modern day folk song, because many, many are familiar with it.

There is a misconception that all folksingers are just dope smoking, drinking, ranters out to change the world. I assure you they are not, and there is a good reason to believe I could out live that type.

I prefer to think of a folksinger as one who entertains and keeps a certain type of music alive. It's not about politics really, it's about the music.

Actually, 'brass' knuckles are made from steel. Not that I know that from personal experience.

"It's about what you wore to the prom, Peace."

Truthfully, I didn't graduate high school and so didn't go to the prom. However, had I, there is NO way on God's green Earth that I would have worn a tux. NO WAY!

Hey, Stranger. Meet Richard. Richard, meet Stranger. Guys, it's about music for both of you.
