Old Dungeon Gill - Langdale

From Monday till Thursday evenings next week I'll be taking my banjo to the Old Dungeon Gill to have some tunes with a fiddling friend from the Netherlands called Jan Vader. There could well be some other players as well. So if you fancy some good old tunes as relaxation after the Lake District hills, bring an instrument to the ODG and join us.

Cheers
Ray

Ray,
what an invitation! Good tunes and incredible pub and Langdale Valley. Do buses still run up the valley? people could camp I guess.

If anybody has the time, drop in at the Church and Church Yard at Chapel Stile. William Irving is buried there - it says so on his tombstone. He was a Lakeland fiddler who worked and played in Langdale. He is the inspiration and source for many of the tunes on A Trip to the Lakes by the Boat Band.

Portugal? You're just showing off, Les. Yes I'll be camping in the NT campsite. Thanks for the tip about William Irving - I'll pay my respects. Langdale seems to be a good place for fiddlers - the Landlord of the ODG's a good fiddler as well - we'll have to try and get him out from behind the bar.

Cheers
Ray

Not sure now as it was around 40 years ago but a bunch of us were thrown out of either the ODG or the NDG for singing. We went outside and sang. Also had a really good sing around one Sunday with a bunch of fox hunters somewhere near there.

I would swap two Portugals for a Langdale, but seven wouldn't wash with the rest of the party. I will see if I can find a bar that will let me sing Oh Good Ale or some such song.

have a good one.

Dammit! I've just got back from Langdale.

Yes, Les, there's a pretty good bus service these days - drops you practically at the door.

I've just realised I won't be able to make it till Tuesday, I forgot about the Sheffield Old Time session on Monday night in the Kelham Island Tavern.
Doh!

Not been there for years - Do they still serve the beer in plastic "glasses"?

The Rivelin Folk club people (sheffield) are having their annual lake district do in Langdale this weekend so you'll find plenty of folkies in the vicinity.I'll probably be there myself. Its being held at Raw Head, the Fell and Rock hut in Langdale.

Pity I won't get there till tuesday, then. Did an Old Time gig with Dave Young at the Rivelin folk club a few years ago.

Just being picky ... but the fiddler buried in the churchyard at Chapel Stile is William Irwin, not Irving!

You can see William Irwin's tunes, and some other Lakes MSS, on our website www.village-music-project.org
I don't know whether this link will work as I can't get it to work in the linkmaker, I'll see when it's posted.
