Utah Phillips Benefit-The Ark-Ann Arbor 14 May 08

19 Mar 08 - 12:57 PM (#2292719)
Subject: Utah Phillips Benefit-The Ark-Ann Arbor,
From: Big Mick

I just got the call from Flemming Artists and am very pleased to announce the following:

Benefit concert for Bruce "Utah" Phillips

May 14, 2008
The Ark, Ann Arbor, Michigan
Featured Guest Artist:

Garnet Rogers

Guest Host:

Matt Watroba

of "Folks Like Us" on WDET,
and host of Sing Out! Radio Magazine
heard on XM Radio, many public radio stations and streamed live on FolkAlley.com

I will post more detailed information as it becomes available in this thread, but mark the date. It is going to be a great concert. And I believe that Utah will be doing a callin to the show, as well as another good friend of his.

All the best,

Mick

This benefit concert continues to come together in fine shape. It looks like Utah will be doing a call in that night, Garnet is excited and honored to be a part of it, Matt Watroba will be performing and hosting. It will be a great time. Those of you in the Eastern Michigan precincts can help be spreading the word, and we are putting it out through other channels as well. I hope there will be a nice Mudcat contingent (leftydee, Cool Beans, Maryanne, and others) so put it on the calendar.

The Siglin clan and all at the Ark are great folks who built a perfect setting for folk music shows. Not being able to be there for Utah pisses me off exceptionally. Being part of a song swap show at The Ark with Michael Cooney, Sally Rogers, Barry O'neil and Joe Hickerson was a grand memory for me that I will always cherish!! I hope you make a million for Utah.

Well, buddy, I am looking for you to do a callin that night. I spoke with Jim Flemming about it and he wondered how you were. So if you can't be there for it, you surely can be a part of it. I am sure Anya Siglin will be happy to hear that.

All the best,

Mick

I just spoke with Mark Damron of the IWW General HQ. They are fully onboard with the project, and are making available for sale at the event copies of the centenary reproduction of the Little Red Songbook with all proceeds to go to the fund for Utah. This is really shaping up nicely. It is going to be an event worth travelling to.

All the best,

Mick

Best of luck with this special event.

I have fond members of the "seven wonders tour" we provided Utah in Lansing, way back in the Pleistocene.

What a treat for the folks of Ann Arbor, and anywhere within a decent radius. Thank you, Mick, for doing all the legwork to put this show together!

Doing the legwork for something like this isn't much strain, Dan. Everyone that knows Utah Phillips wants to help out. The show is going to be fun. We really appreciate Garnet Rogers, bless him, for donating his time.

This is a simple principle. It's called taking care of our own.

All the best,

Mick

It looks like Len Wallace and Chris Buhalis are going to join us for the event. We will probably do a singaround of labor music for a set on stage. Pass the word, pass the word. Going to be a special night.

I just got off the phone with Utah. He sounds great and is very excited about the event, as well as others out there that are helping him. This gentle man is such a wonderful spirit, one cannot help but slip into idolizing him. He is going to send me CD's which will be for sale that night, along with the centenary reproduction 1905 songbook. I am asking all that I contact to treat it as it is, a fundraiser. Come prepared to spend a little, enjoy a lot, and help out a Brother who needs the help, and who has spent his life spreading the word. Art Thieme told me that Utah taught him the secret to spreading a message is to do it with humour and grace. I heartily second that notion.

Please pass the word, and let's make this a night to remember.

Al the best,

Mick

If you go to The Ark's website and go to the May Events Calendar, you will see the listing there for the concert, with all the appropriate details. It starts at 8:00 PM on May 14, the cost is $20.00. The lineup for the night is:

Garnet Rogers
Len Wallace
Matt Watroba
Chris Buhalis
Eleni Kelakos
Mick Lane

We are going to have CD's for sale, centenary reproductions of the 1905 songbook, and just a great night of music. I am hopeful we can do as good a job as our friends down east did, and have one of those special musical nights. Sure hope Mudcatters within 3 hours can make it.

I am going to be a busy big boy that week. I will be coming back from Indian Neck the weekend before, and leaving to play Beaver Island with my band right after.

All the best,

Mick

I wish I could be there. A gang of us did a benefit for the great man in Blue Hill Maine last Sunday, and it was a great time.
I wasn't able to sing, but I did do the narration in Phoebe Snow while Jacqui did the singing. She also sang Miner's Lullaby.

kat, apparently they IWW did a 100 year anniversary reproduction of their Little Red Songbook. I am not sure yet if is all the songs over 100 years or if it is a reproduction of the songbook from the first year. But they sell a lot of them and they are sending me as many as I want at cost so I can mark them up a bit and give the proceeds to Utah. I will let you know when I have them in hand.

All the best,

Mick

Things are progressing swimmingly, m'dear. Just had a conference call with Jim Fleming (Utah's agent, and a producer) and Matt Watroba, host of Folks Like Us on WDET in Eastern Michigan, as well as the host of the Sing Out! Radio Magazine. We laid out the format for the night, and put the finishing touches on an email flyer that I will post a link to as soon as it is done. It is great looking. I expect a sold out audience that night, and I hope to see many Mudcatters.

May 14..... 8:00 PM..... The Ark in Ann Arbor,MI...... be there or be square....

All the best,

Mick

Judith...you should add an area code--this is an international forum..
Mick..--we are holding a folk music festival in Chico May 17th and would like to have some Utah products to sell there for him. Apparently he and Joanna are too involved to send any thing...any idea of another source of his goods? Perhaps...if you have any c.d's or song books after your gig, perhaps you could forward along to our Folk Music Society to
market? There is a benefit for him in the Bay Area tonight..too.

Laurel, I will see after our concerts what I have left. I have two of these two do. When I speak to Utah, I will mention this to him. I know he wants to sell this stock.

We are fast on track to a wonderful night that will greatly help this wonderful man. I want to urge all Mudcatters within a reasonable driving distance to please help make this a successful event.

All the best,

Mick

Claudia Schmidt
Peter "Madcat" Ruth

How cool is that? This is going to be a whale of a show, and do some good while we are at it.

If you are within a couple of hours of Ann Arbor, you would do well to be there.

PS: for local folks going to A2 from Detroit, I heard on the tv that M-14 is down to 1 lane in each direction, for bridge work at Sheldon Rd. Ford Rd or I-94 is the alternate.
