20 Mar 08 - 05:21 AM (#2293357) Subject: Alan Lomax on Radio 4 From: Fred McCormick There was an interesting item on this morning's edition of the Today Programme, BBC Radio 4; Shirley Collins talking about her work with Alan Lomax on his Southern Journey field trip in 1959. Only three minutes long, but you should be able to find it via the Listen Again facility, http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/progs/listenagain.shtml , after the BBC updates it (presumably later morning). Also, Tuesday March 25, there's a BBC Radio 4 programme called Love, Death and the Lady; the Life and Music of Shirley Collins. 11-30 am to 12'04. |

20 Mar 08 - 07:52 AM (#2293419) Subject: RE: Alan Lomax on Radio 4 From: Kevin Sheils In fact the most important thing, as far as "advertising" is concerned was a brief mention at the end of the item that Shirley will be featured on at 11.30 next Tuesday Radio 4 - Love Death and the Lady: The Life and Music of Shirley Collins presented by Verity Sharp. |
31 Jan 12 - 07:10 AM (#3299569) Subject: RE: Alan Lomax on Radio 4 From: ChrisJBrady Radio 4 - Love Death and the Lady: The Life and Music of Shirley Collins presented by Verity Sharp This is on BBC iPlayer right now and available for downloading or recording. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01bf48n/Stuart_Maconies_Freak_Zone_Shirley_and_Dolly_Collins_Love_Death_and_the_Lady/ Folksie female siblings Shirley and Dolly Collins provide this week's Featured Album. Plus Stuart chooses his pick of not-normal music for your delectation. Shirley Collins' uniquely plain yet prominent voice is one of the gems of English folk, accompanied here by her sister Dolly's sparse and haunting arrangements. 1970's Love, Death And The Lady is a mournful album with tales of murderers, thieves and wrong-doing. The follow up to the more widely known Anthems In Eden, it glows with critical praise and is often hailed as the Collins' masterpiece. The music at times, seems in opposition to the vocals rather than accompanying it, which all makes for a challenging but rewarding listen.
