I've been asked to do this song as part of a program on Tuesday night. I've found the lyrics and a midi file of the tune but if someone has the chords, it would save me time. As you can see I have a whole two days and one night to learn enough to at least do an approximation of the song. And since I work during the day... Any help will be appreciated! Thanks SC |

Thompson, mid 1800 From: SouthernCelt Well, after almost two hours of learning & practicing, I think I can safely say that I've got the tune firm in memory but my CRS insists on preventing the lyrics from "sticking". Plus words like " 'neath" become "near" to easily with just a glance at a "cheat sheet" of lyrics. I'm sure my two dogs and at least one of my cats do not ever want to hear this song again. We'll see how things go tonight when the "big moment" arrives ;-). SC |

My part might have actually gone better than the main presentation by the fellow that asked me to do the song. He'd only had two days to do his preparation as well (including a powerpoint slide show) and ole Murphy stepped in with his "law" and made sure that everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. I think Murphy had lost interest by the time they got to me. SC |

Thompson, mid 1800 From: SouthernCelt The program was about the Battle of Ball's Bluff in late 1861 (one of the early Southern victories that ultimately cost a lot of Federal commanders their jobs). The 18th Mississippi Infantry participated and Col. Erasmus Burt who was from here in Jackson, MS, (and was the founder of the Mississippi School for the Deaf which still operates today) was killed near the end of the fight. His funeral (the first one anyway) was held in a civilian home near to the battlefield) and the then popular song "Lilly Dale" was played and sung as a funeral dirge during the service. The final part of the program showed the casualties and focused slightly on Burt since he was a local. The man giving the program asked me to do the song to close the presentation. The presentation was being given to a monthly meeting of the the local "camp," Jefferson Davis Camp 635 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. In addition to occasionally performing at the meetings, I also publish the monthly newsletter and maintain the web site. A number of us who had ancestors who were officers in the Confederate Army are also members of a local chapter of the Military Order of the Stars and Bars; the chapter is named for Col. Burt. The MOSB doesn't meet as often as SCV nor does it have as many members, but the meetings typically include a program on some facet of the War Between the States with an obvious emphasis on the Confederacy. Long answer I know but the song wasn't done as a eulogy for a recently deceased person. SC |

Also I meant to clarify that the song was performed at Burt's first funeral in Virginia and not at the secondary funeral/memorial service when his remains were disinterred and relocated to Jackson later. Our MOSB chapter holds a short memorial service at his Jackson grave site each year near the anniversary of his death. SC |
