Chord Req: Lilly Dale (H.S. Thompson)

Subject: Chord Req: 'Lilly Dale' by H.S. Thompson, mid 1800s
From: SouthernCelt

Anyone have the chords to this song in a postable or e-mailable form? I've been asked to do this song as part of a program on Tuesday night. I've found the lyrics and a midi file of the tune but if someone has the chords, it would save me time. As you can see I have a whole two days and one night to learn enough to at least do an approximation of the song. And since I work during the day...

Any help will be appreciated! Thanks

SC

Nothing like getting an early start--SC;-)--no matter--it's a easy song--

I assume you've got Leslie Nelson's MIDI, which is in A, if not, the song is the same in any key--there is one measure of four counts between the slash marks, each letter is worth two counts, the one letter at at the beginning is a pickup, and the double vertical lines at the ends are just for show--Don't ever say I did nothing for ya;-)

Verse
A||A A/D D/A A/E7 E7
A A/D D/A E7/AA||

Chorus
||A D/E7 A/A D/ E7 E7/
A A/ D D/ A E7/ AA||

Thanks M Ted. Boy you can always count on a Mudcatter to come through quickly.

Let me know if you need any help working it out, and, if not, how it all goes--It is a very pretty song, thanks for giving me a chance to poke around with it--

Well, after almost two hours of learning & practicing, I think I can safely say that I've got the tune firm in memory but my CRS insists on preventing the lyrics from "sticking". Plus words like " 'neath" become "near" to easily with just a glance at a "cheat sheet" of lyrics. I'm sure my two dogs and at least one of my cats do not ever want to hear this song again.

We'll see how things go tonight when the "big moment" arrives ;-).

"words like " 'neath" become "near""--I suppose that's the folk process at work;-) Anyway, no one can distinguish that "th" when it's sung--just sing "nee"--no one will know the difference! And two hours isn't really that bad, in terms of getting a song down. Break a leg.

Four sheet music editions (with piano arrangements) are at The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music. That may help.

Here are Lesley Nelson-Burns Midi and Lyrics which I referenced for the chords posted above. Again, a lovely melody, with lyrics that will brighten any occassion;-)

I think that someone in my family used to play this when I was very young, though I remember it with more of a march feel--

Open Mike, here's the link: "Lilly Dale"

This has both the midi and the lyrics, but I've posted another text version of the lyrics below:

LILLY DALE

'Twas a calm, still night,
And the moon's pale light
Shone soft o'er hill and vale;
When friends mute with grief
Stood around the deathbed
Of my poor lost Lilly Dale.

Chorus:
Oh! Lilly, sweet Lilly,
Dear Lilly Dale,
Now the wild rose blossoms
O'er her little green grave
'Neath the trees in the flow'ry vale.
Oh! Lilly, sweet Lilly,
Dear Lilly Dale,
Now the wild rose blossoms
O'er her little green grave
'Neath the trees in the flow'ry vale.

Her cheeks that once glowed
With the rose tint of health,
By the hand of disease
Had turned pale,
And the death damp
Was on the pure white brow
Of my poor lost Lilly Dale.

Chorus

I go, she said
To the land of rest,
And ere my strength shall fail,
I must tell you where,
Near my own loved home,
You must lay Lilly Dale.

Chorus

'Neath the chestnut tree,
Where the wild flow'rs grow,
And the stream ripples forth
Thro' the vale,
Where the birds shall warble
Their songs in spring,
There lay poor Lilly Dale.

Chorus

Well, I got through the song w/o a major screw-up. My part might have actually gone better than the main presentation by the fellow that asked me to do the song. He'd only had two days to do his preparation as well (including a powerpoint slide show) and ole Murphy stepped in with his "law" and made sure that everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. I think Murphy had lost interest by the time they got to me.

Congratulations, SC.

Thanks are due to contemplator for the MIDI and the lyrics. It's a charming tune, although I for one have lost patience with lyrics like that.

I'm going to download the tune and add it to my piano repertoire. Again, thanks, Leslie for the lovely arrangement and for making the MIDI available to the world.

Glad that things went well, for you, anyway. One-off powerpoint presentations are usually a disaster, sorry for that. What, if I may ask, was the subject? I thought it might have been a memorial service, or something--the idea of powerpoint eulogies makes me a little nervous--

The program was about the Battle of Ball's Bluff in late 1861 (one of the early Southern victories that ultimately cost a lot of Federal commanders their jobs). The 18th Mississippi Infantry participated and Col. Erasmus Burt who was from here in Jackson, MS, (and was the founder of the Mississippi School for the Deaf which still operates today) was killed near the end of the fight. His funeral (the first one anyway) was held in a civilian home near to the battlefield) and the then popular song "Lilly Dale" was played and sung as a funeral dirge during the service. The final part of the program showed the casualties and focused slightly on Burt since he was a local. The man giving the program asked me to do the song to close the presentation.

The presentation was being given to a monthly meeting of the the local "camp," Jefferson Davis Camp 635 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. In addition to occasionally performing at the meetings, I also publish the monthly newsletter and maintain the web site. A number of us who had ancestors who were officers in the Confederate Army are also members of a local chapter of the Military Order of the Stars and Bars; the chapter is named for Col. Burt. The MOSB doesn't meet as often as SCV nor does it have as many members, but the meetings typically include a program on some facet of the War Between the States with an obvious emphasis on the Confederacy.

Long answer I know but the song wasn't done as a eulogy for a recently deceased person.

Ignore the unpaired close paren in the first paragraph after "battlefield". Also I meant to clarify that the song was performed at Burt's first funeral in Virginia and not at the secondary funeral/memorial service when his remains were disinterred and relocated to Jackson later. Our MOSB chapter holds a short memorial service at his Jackson grave site each year near the anniversary of his death.
