Wikipedia favored over MySpace for music info

Recent data finds that an artist's 'wiki' chosen 2-to-1 over MySpace page

Billboard
updated 10:35 a.m. CT, Mon., March. 24, 2008

DENVER - Search for an artist on any of the popular search engines, and the top three results are practically guaranteed: the artist's official Web site, Wikipedia entry and MySpace page — often in that order.

But while artists and their handlers devote massive attention to the Web site and MySpace, the Wikipedia page is often overlooked. Recent data suggests they may want to reconsider their priorities.

According to data provided to Billboard from Yahoo — the second-most popular search engine on the Web after Google — those searching for artist information are selecting the Wikipedia entry link over artists' MySpace pages by a factor of more than 2-to-1. The Wikipedia entries are also more popular than artists' Web sites.

"The interest that people had to go to MySpace to find out more about their favorite band is waning in favor of going to Wikipedia," Yahoo head of programming and label relations John Lenac says. "In the last six months, it's surpassed it."

Yet when compared with the number of artist profiles on MySpace, Wikipedia entries are noticeably fewer. MySpace claims 3 million artist profiles. Wikipedia does not have an exact count of artist entries, but estimates that it's in the "tens of thousands," according to Wikipedia Foundation head of communications Jay Walsh.

There's a bit more at the link.

Who's gonna write the Wiki articles about which of our performers?

Wiki pages seem like a good idea - if I could be bothered I'd suggest it to the artist whose Myspace page has black writing on very dark pictures! I was so unimpressed I didn't even try to read the info.

Sandra in Sydney -

On pages like that, all you need to do is click and drag, as if selecting the text to copy. When an area is selected, the forecolor usually reverses, and the background color goes to a default, so the contrast is usually good.

Try this on the blank space at the bottom of any thread page, below the "Forum Home" link, if you haven't seen the old "surprise."

But if they have no talent for web design they almost certainly have no musical talent of interest .... so why bother.

Tthere's no absolutely corrolation between the two, I know of at least 4 people who are completely hopeless when it comes to matters concerning computers and other electronic toys, yet they're all very good musicians indeed, so.......

My son made me a wiki page a while ago, but if you don't get enough hits they delete you. And they did :-(

Actually, I'm glad to see that. Sems to me that the main reason that folks would prefer an artist's Wiki entry to his own self-promos (whether MySpace or a dedicated website) would be to separate the recognized/established musicians from the wannabes.

(And I'm saying this as the most small-time, half-hearted kind of wannabe myself...)

Despite Wiki's potential shortcomings as a completely reliable source (due to the editing-by-anybody policy), it is generally pretty objective, and entries can be expected to exist only for subjects of interest to the public in general, not just to the subjects' own selves.

'to separate the recognized/established musicians from the wannabes'

even the "recognized/established musicians" were wannabes at one point in their lives/careers, wanting to emulate their particular musical heroes.

Yeah, sure, Charlotte, every big shot was an unknown once upon a time. But it's every bit as much a trusim to observe that not every ambitious nobody ever attains success. Some of those who never make it may indeed have excellent qualities and be worth a listen, of course, but many more are not.

My point was that anybody and everybody can promote themselves with a homemade website and a MySpace page ~ the modern-day equivalent of "vanity publishing" ~ and it's helpful to have another source where a bit of outside influence is available to keep a lid on the massive number of self-promos.

Why else would you think Wiki has recently become a more trusted source of info than MySpace, etc.?

By the way ~ are you ever going to sing up and "officially" join Mudcat? You're certainly more than active enough, on a daily if not hourly basis, and your contributions are almost always interesting and very much to the point. We all know your first name as well as your preferred nickname; why are you holding out? Aren't you getting tired of typing out "the Mole Catcher's . . . Apprentice" every time you post even the shortest message? Join up, and your Mudcat name wil be inserted automatically. Plus which, folks will be able to send you personal messages, and you can respond if and and when you like, and even initiate your own PMs if it suits your fancy.

Been a member of Mudcat for quite sometime, and as I perform both acoustically and 'plugged in' it seems appropriate here as well

John, thanks for the info. I have passed it on to my brother.

Last I knew, Mick was writing something up on the Patons or Art Thieme, or maybe both. I forgot.:-)
