Back in ought ought troll (who is the epitome of all that is courtesy - ironic for one of his name on the web) posted the following in the MudCat Island Folk Festival thread.

'Tis now we remember, when revelry's o'er
The songs and the tunes that we've played by the score
The day that is ending, 'twill come back no more
As the first star of evening is twinkling.

As we sit by the fire with glasses in hand
We think of the friends and the fellowship grand
Of the time we have spent where the sea meets the land,
And the ocean goes rolling forever.

The night is swift falling. Our moment is passed.
Each lass to her lad and each lad to his lass
And we'll pray that this parting will not be the last
For we'll meet in our dreams here forever.

it was brought back to my attention today - and I realized that I really, *really* want to use this song.

It scans to 'Sweet Betsy from Pike' - and slowed down a bit and with a couple of minor note changes gives it a haunting air...but does anyone have a "better" tune?

MMario-

"Sweet Betsy" or the "Old Orange Flute" works fine for the first three lines. Something different is most likely intended for the last non-rhyming line, and it's probably best left unresolved rather than coming back to the first chord. There's a "freedom" song that would be a good fit, but its title is eluding me for now.

The tune to the Limerick Rake would fit a lot better.

For some reason the song I was thinking of above was "On Birmingham Sunday" where the last line runs "And the choir was singing of freedom..."

It may not help but now I can think about something else!

Any of the tunes used for the False Bride/Week before Easter/I Once Loved a Lassie/Dancing at Whitsun/Lambs on the Green Hills family of songs.

They are slow and haunting, and they fit the metre perfectly, including the last line.

MMario, thanks for posting this, I went to the original thread and was enchanted. Shame it's closed. I don't know troll but if he is still around perhaps he has a tune for it? (he did call his offerings poems but...)Seems like if he had something in mind it would be good to use that. It's a lovely piece.

Thanks for starting this thread, MMario!!!!

The poem scans well to "Bold Fenian Men." You would need to stretch a little with the last line, but it's got lovely opportunity for some haunting harmony.

Works also with "Health to the Company," but isn't as wistful.
