One of my favorites passes on at the ripe old age of 93.

Wow...I really, really liked him. Had no idea he was that old!:-)

Just watched him, yesterday, looking pretty young, actually, in a 1990 Perry Mason episode. He was a high-roller in Vegas who murdered a blackmailer.

Thanks, Wesley.

one of the great "tough guys". They don't have actors like that anyhmore.

I really liked the sneering laughter and cold anger he could bring to his more villainous parts and naturally he wasn't anything like that in the real world. In "Kiss of Death".....the old lady in the wheelchair.....remember the scene? Now that was cold, as cold a character that has ever been portrayed! Always strikes me as funny how many great actors with bad guy careers (or at least a portion of it) are in fact caring and gentle human beings. His career was so varied that you can pick almost any type of flick and he did it. His cynical cop portrayals were something new and I think Clint Eastwood owes both Widmark and Bogey a debt of gratitude.

I guess I enjoyed his westerns the best and always watch "Two Rode Together" with Jimmy Stewart every time I see it is on. Lots of today's actors could take a lesson from his career.

Wow. I had no idea he had played so many roles. I always liked him and it's nice to see that he had such a long life. Hope it was a happy retirement.

That is a most impressive body of work!

"Always strikes me as funny how many great actors with bad guy careers (or at least a portion of it) are in fact caring and gentle human beings."

Yeah, Spaw, while reading that, it occurred to me that moviedom's quintessential monster, Boris Karloff, gave generously to children's charities and loved to sit in an easy-chair and read stories to children gathered around him. Marvelous at acting out lines, and the kids really lapped it up.

I was wrong. It was Kevin Tighe who was in the Perry Mason I saw yesterday. had a very similar look, but younger. No wonder.

Still, Widmark was one of my favourites.

A favorite as well. I was first introduced to his movies in the one that he is tied to a wagon wheel. Can't remember the name. Maybe "The Last Wagon". Great great actor.

Something always bothered me about the characters Widmark played...not that he didn't do it well...I just found his characters or his personal style or something generally not likeable in some way (whether or not the character was meant to be sympathized with by the audience). I have no rational explanation or justification for it. Perhaps he reminded me of someone I'd had a bad experience with as a kid or something. Who knows? I felt the same way about Ernest Borgnine.

"The Bedford Incident" was one film that I remember well. It was a real nail-biter. Widmark played the obsessive captain of the ship very effectively.

I liked that when he played a racist jerk opposite Sidney Poitier, he apologized after every scene. And Sidney handed him his lifetime achievment award, well-earned, Mr. Widmark!

One of the very best. Another link to the golden age has been severed.
