In "Kiss of Death".....the old lady in the wheelchair.....remember the scene? Now that was cold, as cold a character that has ever been portrayed! Always strikes me as funny how many great actors with bad guy careers (or at least a portion of it) are in fact caring and gentle human beings. His career was so varied that you can pick almost any type of flick and he did it. His cynical cop portrayals were something new and I think Clint Eastwood owes both Widmark and Bogey a debt of gratitude. I guess I enjoyed his westerns the best and always watch "Two Rode Together" with Jimmy Stewart every time I see it is on. Lots of today's actors could take a lesson from his career. Spaw |

Yeah, Spaw, while reading that, it occurred to me that moviedom's quintessential monster, Boris Karloff, gave generously to children's charities and loved to sit in an easy-chair and read stories to children gathered around him. I have no rational explanation or justification for it. Perhaps he reminded me of someone I'd had a bad experience with as a kid or something. Who knows? I felt the same way about Ernest Borgnine. "The Bedford Incident" was one film that I remember well. It was a real nail-biter. Widmark played the obsessive captain of the ship very effectively. |
