I imagine it must be here at Mudcat, if it's in our MIDItext format. The song is on Gibson & Camp At the Gates of Horn and ...Revisited, and on the Limeliters Our Men in San Francisco album. The Limeliters "Civil War Medley" is a medley of "Bright Golden Buttons," "The First Battalion," "Yes I See" and "Two Brothers" - and the Gibson & Camp "Civil War Trilogy" is "The First Battalion," "Yes I See" and "Two Brothers." The Limeliters medley seems to be more-or-less the same arrangement, but with "Bright Golden Buttons" added at the beginning. -Joe-

The Limeliters' Version This version is the first version with "Bright Golden Buttons" at the beginning. Randy Burn's Version This version is very different from the original version and it's the only studio recording of this song. John Denver's Version 1 Though John sounds exhausted and this version is a little bit too slow for this song (nearly 9 minutes), it's still my favorite version. John sounds exhausted because he just sang a very energetic version of San Francisco Bay Blues. John Denver's Version 2 I have to say I like the former version better. |

If a melody has already survived a hundred years, why not capitalize on its established strength to give your new set of words an infusion of power and familiarity? They all sound quite the same except the version by Randy Burns. IMHO, Randy Burns' version is somehow too slow - the "First Battalion" and "Yes I See" part should be more upbeat (did I use that word in a wrong way? Sorry but English is not my native language) tune, while he sang all verses like dirges. Also it's kinda inappropriate exchanging the second verse and third verse in "First Battalion", as well as leaving out the first verse in "Yes I See". John Denver may have gotten his version (1969) from the Limeliters' rendition (1963), so their versions are quite the same. I am sure my lyrics have morphed a bit but the tune and chords hold true with the Limelighters recording. Hope your fingers are in shape because it is a long song. Get the brush strums right and it really adds to the vocals. If you have a 12 string it is easier to get the right hand but your left better be in shape. Plus you don't want to hit the overtone bass note. If you use your thumb with a kind of up stroke you can do it.
