Tune Req: Civil War Medley (Limeliters/Gibson)

It's a suite which have been composed by Bob Gibson and sung by The Gibsons, The Limelighters and John Denver. I have the lyrics of the parts "First Battalion" & "Two Brothers", but don't know where can I find the lyrics of the parts "Bright Golden Button" & "Yes, I See". So I wish that you could help me. Thanq very much!

From: Uncle Phil

And, if memory serves:

Yes, I See

There's battle raging somewhere and its thunder shakes the ground,
Terrible silence when its over, only death makes such a sound,
And I see, yes I see, on the last day of July,
Yes I see, yes I see, on the last day of July.

Something's moving in the shadows, what is this that's drawing nigh,
It's the reaper moving silent, must be someone's time to die,
And I see, yes I see, on the last day of July,
Oh yes I see, yes I see, on the last day of July,
Oh yes I see, yes I see, on the last day of July.

I don't know who wrote this part.

I am wondering if this was originally Bob Gibson's "CIVIL WAR TRILOGY"---the one he and Bob Camp did on their live album at Chicago's folk club THE GATE OF HORN.----Often Bob Gibson did arrangements for the various groups---or they just used what Bob had already done on his own recordings.

If it's in MIDItext, I'd be glad to convert it - just point me to where you found it. I imagine it must be here at Mudcat, if it's in our MIDItext format.
The song is on Gibson & Camp At the Gates of Horn and ...Revisited, and on the Limeliters Our Men in San Francisco album. The Limeliters "Civil War Medley" is a medley of "Bright Golden Buttons," "The First Battalion," "Yes I See" and "Two Brothers" - and the Gibson & Camp "Civil War Trilogy" is "The First Battalion," "Yes I See" and "Two Brothers." The Limeliters medley seems to be more-or-less the same arrangement, but with "Bright Golden Buttons" added at the beginning.
-Joe-

Bright Golden Buttons

Oh, hear the drums thunder
They sound such a wonder
Go march off to war, boys
And have at your fun

With your bangles and spangles
And bright golden buttons
And bright golden buttons
That shine in the sun

Oh, the cannons are screaming
Or is it my dreaming
Young men will stumble
And fall in the dust

And the cheers turn to crying
When life turns to dying
And bright golden buttons
Will all turn to rust

Here's my transcription of the John Denver recording, which I like best of the three:

Civil War Trilogy
(Bob Gibson, as sung by John Denver)

Oh, hear the drums thunder
They sound such a wonder
A young soldier lad
Marches off with his gun

And his bangles and spangles
And bright golden buttons
Bright golden buttons
That shine in the sun

The cannon are screaming
Or is it my dreaming
Young men will stumble
And fall in the dust

And dreams turn to crying
And life turns to dying
And bright golden buttons
Have all turned to rust

Boom bah bah boom bah bah boom
Twelve riders in the gloom
Seven show red and the rest are dead
But the First Battalion's home

Boom bah bah boom bah bah boom
You can hear the hoof beats boom
The drums are low and the pace is slow
But the First Battalion's home

Boom bah bah boom bah bah boom
And Richmond is their tomb
There's a hundred dead at Richmond
Three hundred more at Gettysburg
A hundred more they've never found
But the First Battalion's home

There's a battle raging somewhere
And its thunder shakes the ground
Terrible silence, when it's over
Only death makes such a sound

And I see, oh, yes I see
On the last day of July
Oh, yes I see, oh, yes I see
On the last day of July

What's that moving in the shadows
What is this that's drawing nigh
It's the reaper, moving silent
Must be someone's turn to die

And I see, oh, yes I see
On the last day of July
Oh, yes I see, oh, yes I see
On the last day of July

I said I see, oh, yes I see
On the last day of July

Two brothers on their way
Two brothers on their way
Two brothers on their way
One wore blue, one wore grey
One wore blue and one wore grey
As they marched along their way
The fife and drum began to play
All on a beautiful morning

One was gentle, one was kind
One was gentle, one was kind
One came home, one stayed behind
A cannon ball don't pay no mind
A cannon ball don't pay no mind
Though you're gentle or you're kind
It don't care for the folks behind
All on a beautiful morning

Two girls waiting by the railroad track
Two girls waiting by the railroad track
For their darlings to come back
One wore blue, one wore black
One wore blue and one wore black
Waiting by the railroad track
For their darlings to come back
All on a beautiful morning

Boom bah bah boom bah bah boom
And Richmond is their tomb
There's a hundred dead at Richmond
Three hundred more at Gettysburg
A hundred more they've never found
A hundred more they've never found
But the First Battalion's home

Thanks for posting these,folks.
I thought what The Limeliters did was a medley using excerpts from several songs (except they seeem to have used the whole song "Two Brothers"). Is there more to "Bright Golden Buttons," "The First Batallion," and/or "Yes, I See" than just the parts sung in these medleys?

These are all I can find:

Bob Gibson's Version
I think that it's the first version of this medley, though it's "incomplete".

The Limeliters' Version
This version is the first version with "Bright Golden Buttons" at the beginning.

Randy Burn's Version
This version is very different from the original version and it's the only studio recording of this song.

John Denver's Version 1
Though John sounds exhausted and this version is a little bit too slow for this song (nearly 9 minutes), it's still my favorite version. John sounds exhausted because he just sang a very energetic version of San Francisco Bay Blues.

John Denver's Version 2
I have to say I like the former version better.

Additional lyrics:

Bright Golden Buttons verse II:

Oh, the trumpets are blowing
But you'll not be going
You'll stay here so safe
And warm in your bed

For the last time you heard them
You marched off behind them
Now your bright golden buttons
Have all turn to red

Oh, the cannons are screaming
Or is it my dreaming
Young men will stumble
And fall in the dust

And the cheers turn to crying
When life turns to dying
And bright golden buttons
Have all turned to rust

First Battalion bridge II:

So hold him close and keep him warm
And hang his coat away
And don't you mind that spot of red
That's spread in through the gray

Yes, I See verse II:

Clouds are gathered in the darkness
There's a tempest drawing near
When the darkness has passed over
Then the new day will appear

And I see, and I see
On the last day of July
Yes I see, yes I see
On the last day of July

These verses are not included in the medley.

I don't think anyone has mentioned that "Yes I See" uses one of the two melodies most associated with the American traditional song, The Cuckoo - the up-tempo version.

Oh the cuckoo, she's a pretty bird
She warbles as she flies
And she never hollers cuckoo
Till the last day of July

And I see
Yes I see
On the last day of July

You mean that the tune of "Yes I See" is not written by Bob Gibson?

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Civil War Medley (Limeliters/Gibson)

Yes, that is what I mean.

Some people see this as theft, but I see it as recycling. If a melody has already survived a hundred years, why not capitalize on its established strength to give your new set of words an infusion of power and familiarity?

Bob Dylan did this with much of his early work, thereby bringing additional life to both the new and old songs.

imho

Well, I just listened to the 5 versions I referred to in my last post. They all sound quite the same except the version by Randy Burns.

IMHO, Randy Burns' version is somehow too slow - the "First Battalion" and "Yes I See" part should be more upbeat (did I use that word in a wrong way? Sorry but English is not my native language) tune, while he sang all verses like dirges. Also it's kinda inappropriate exchanging the second verse and third verse in "First Battalion", as well as leaving out the first verse in "Yes I See".

John Denver may have gotten his version (1969) from the Limeliters' rendition (1963), so their versions are quite the same.

Also I would like to say that I really love Glenn Yarbrough's tremling tenor.

Here is a YouTube video that uses the audio from the 1963 Gibson & Camp "Live at the Gate of Horn" album.

Here are two other videos of "men of a certain age" (that is, guys who were obviously influenced by the original performances) playing 12-string guitars and singing the trilogy:

David Albion, uploaded March 2011

I learned "Two Brothers" at summer camp in the early 1970s, but did not learn its origin at the time.

I learned this from the Limelighters Album in the 60s and have played it through the years. I am sure my lyrics have morphed a bit but the tune and chords hold true with the Limelighters recording. Hope your fingers are in shape because it is a long song. Get the brush strums right and it really adds to the vocals. If you have a 12 string it is easier to get the right hand but your left better be in shape. Plus you don't want to hit the overtone bass note. If you use your thumb with a kind of up stroke you can do it.

Am(Arpeggio and let it ring until next chord)
Oh, hear the drums thunder
C (Same as above)
They sound such a wonder
D (same)
Go march off to war, boy
E (same)
And have at your fun

Am (Single strum)    C (Single Strum)
With your bangles and spangles
    D(SS)
And bright golden buttons
Am (SS)
Bright golden buttons
    E(SS)
That shine in the sun

(Same as 1st verse)

Oh, the cannons are screaming
Or is it my dreaming
Young men will stumble
And fall to the dust

And the cheers turn to crying
When life turns to dying
And bright golden buttons
Will all turned to rust

(Here you want to hit the root Bass note heavy on the Booms and then it is that same heavy bass note rhythm through out)

Am          E            Am
Boom bah bah boom bah bah boom
Am            E      Am
We're riders in the gloom
Am         E          Am       C
Seven show red and the rest are dead
       D          E    Am
But the First Battalion's home

(This section same as above)

Boom bah bah boom bah bah boom
You can here the hoof beats boom
The drums are low and the pace is slow
But the first battalions home.

Boom bah bah boom bah bah boom
For Richmond is their tomb
There's a hundred dead at Shiloh
Two hundred more at Gettysburg
And a hundred more we've never heard
But the First Battalion's home

(Alternating Bass here)
Am C                     Am
So run to your home, Virginia gals
                E
Fix your hair in pins
Am                C
Give them wine and kisses
          D       E            Am
But don't ask them where they'd been

(Same as other Booms)

Boom bah bah boom bah bah boom
You can hear the hoof beats boom
The drums are low and the pace is slow
But the First Battalion's home    (Let it ring a few beats here and then no vocals as you pick up the tempo. Then it is alternating Bass, Carter Style)

Am                C
There's a battle. Raging round us
       D       E          Am
And the thunder shakes the ground.
Am                     C
And there was silence, when it was over
    D            E    Am
Only death makes such a sound.

Am         C
And I see, ah, yes I see
       D       E Am
On the last day of July
Am         C
And I see, ah, yes I see
       D       E Am
On the last day of July

Am                C
Something's moving in the shadows
      D      E            Am
I can hear a man's voice cry
Am               C
It's the reaper, moving silent
             D         E       Am
I think it's someone's time to die

Am         C
And I see, ah, yes I see
       D       E Am
On the last day of July
Am         C
And I see, ah, yes I see
       D       E Am
On the last day of July

(Pause the vocals and then up to The D chord you play the chords with a very fast and light strum back and forth with the pad of your pointer finger only. Then the D, E, and Am, are played with just one down strum.) *I don't know where I picked up the 3rd Two brothers but the song flows better into the one wore blue section when the 3rd two brothers is in there and the vocal is like the first two brothers line.

Am            C
Two brothers on there way
Am          E
Two brothers on their way
Am          C
Two brothers on their way
D                E       Am
One wore blue and one wore gray

(The chords through this next section are all down strums on the beat.)

Am /    C    /   /   /    Am
One wore blue and one wore gray
Am /   /   /   /    /    E
As they marched along that day
Am(Single Strum)    C (SS)
The fife and drum began to play
D(SS)          E(SS)Am(SS)
All on a beautiful morn

(Same Pattern)

One was gentle, one was kind
One was gentle, one was kind
One came home, one stayed behind
'Cause cannon balls don't pay no mind
Cannon balls don't pay no mind
Though you're gentle, or you're kind
They don't think of the ones behind
All on a beautiful morn

Two girls waiting by the railroad tracks
Two girls waiting by the railroad tracks
For their loved ones to come back
One wore Blue and one wore black
One wore blue and one wore black
Waiting by the railroad track
For their darlings to come back
All on a beautiful morn

(Boom Bahs same as before.)

Boom bah bah boom bah bah boom
For Richmond is their tomb
There's a hundred dead at Shiloh
Two hundred more at Gettysburg
And a hundred more we've never heard
But the First Battalion's home

Boom bah bah boom bah bah boom
Boom bah bah boom bah bah boom
Boom bah bah boom bah bah boom

Civil War Trilogy (Bob Gibson Cover) by Boot Leg.

I also added the Bright Golden Buttons at the beginning of the trilogy, like the Limeliters did. I basically stole John Denver's arrangements.

One was gentle and one was kind
One was gentle and one was kind
One came home, one stayed behind
Cannonball don't pay no mind

Cannonball don't pay no mind
Though you're gentle or you're kind
It don't think of the folks behind
All on a beautiful morning

Two girls waiting by the railroad track
Two girls waiting by the railroad track
For their darlings to come back
One wore blue and one wore black

One wore blue and one wore black
Waiting by the railroad track
For their darlings to come back
All on a beautiful morning

[C] [G/B] [Am]
[C] [G/B] [Am]

[C]Boom bah bah [G/B]boom bah bah [Am]boom
And [C]Richmond [G/B]is their [Am]tomb
There's a [C]hundred [G/B]still at [Am]Rich-[D]mond
Three [C]hundred [G/B]dead at [Am]Gettys-[D]burg
And a [C]hundred [G/B]more they've [Am]never [D]found
Yes, a [C]hundred [G/B]more they've [Am]never [D]found
But the [G]First Ba-[D/F#]ttalion's [E]home
