There are several with national reputations. Whoever the organiser of this is, he or she should be more careful of protocol and peoples' feelings. No one is in this game for the money - but they are entitled to what little prestige attaches to being booked to entertain at a folk festival. |

I bumped into one of them so angry that he said he was withdrawing. I get the impression theres some weird people organising folk festivals these days. Have you seen the poster for Southwell? theres all these ubermensch types on the front page. On the reverse side in tiny tiny letters - it transpires they have booked Bill Caddick! Like, as if one of these new people were capable of writing songs like The Writing of Tiperary or John O'Dreams. Weird shit..! It can only mean the organisers are very Johnny Come Latelys to the folkscene. |

Visited Critch tram museum as well and had a lovely tine - But it was perishing cold for May - Think we had some snow if I remember rightly. Don't let that put you off though - It is a great place. Watch some episodes of 'Peak Practice' before you go and then spot the locations. Visit the Heights of Abraham at Matlock Bath as well - Brilliant. Good Luck Dave. |

Have you seen the poster for Southwell? Let me declare an interest. I am a trader and I took a stall at Gate to Southwell Festival last year. I am taking another one this year because last year was a very succesful weekend for me. The organisers had a pretty good idea what they were doing and they had the best bogs of any greenfield festival I have ever been to!! :-) The organisers as far as I could seemed to have a pretty good idea about what they were doing as far as artists were concerned and some work was done involving local schoolchildren doing longsword, rapper and singing. Their Friday afternoon concert was packed. Of course I had the advantage of going to the festival. Below is a link to the website. As someone who goes to a lot of festivals because I am a trader and without seeing the programme or who is on with who, that's a good up-to-date line up IMHO. Precisely what's wrong with it? And who on there is a Johnny Come Lately? Also it strikes me that Bill is there as a member of All Blacked Up Ceilidh Band as well as a solo spot. I go to a lot of folk clubs and I am repeating a point of view that has been expressed to me three of four times. It could be that you know a lot more about folk music than the people I have been talking to. However from the way you have declined to engage with the central point - namely that Bill Caddick should have been on the front page with top billing, I take it its just the regular let's have a stupid argument about sod all sort of malarkey. |

If you write something I want to agree with, I may or may not write and say so. If you write something - which let's face it was pretty vehement - "weird shit" was your expression - if I disagree with it I may or may not say so on the same basis. I am quite happy to engage with the argument that Bill Caddick should be at the top of the bill and on the front page with top billing. I get the impression that Bill Caddick is not particularly bothered about being top of the bill. How do I get that impression? Well for starters his gig list on his own website does not seem to have been up-dated since 2006. http://www.billcaddick.co.uk/gigs.html Not a definitive answer I know - but it does look as if not many people are booking him these days. He is booked at a few festivals (Chester 2007, Lincoln 2008) but I have not seen him much at a festivals as as a solo artist, more as member of All Blacked Up. I don't see how you can assume that because of where they put him there on the bill they are Johnny Come Lately's, which is what you wrote. Are you saying that all those festival organisers who haven't even booked him - which as far as I can see is many of the rest of the festival organisers in the UK - are Johnny Come Lately's too? I just don't think people should make allegations - however expressed - that don't seem to have much basis in fact. If the people you met at the folk clubs said something you disagreed with I doubt if you would have posted it on here. And Bill Caddick is a great singer and has written some of the best songs I have ever heard. |

You may feel that Bill Caddick's name will sell tickets. The organiser whose festival it is - on that piece of paper - did not. Bill is given more or less the same amuount of space on the website as everyone else. You started the argument by calling festival organisers "johnny come latelys" and suggesting that it was "weird shit". Having had personal experience of the festival last year and attracted again this year in part by the line-up, I thought you were wrong and said so. That's all. |

The one at Easter this year was like being in Siberia... howling winds and drifting snow. Our pals tent blew up, and our display tent blew down. Luckily we were sleeping in R Pod... the caravan. And the event organiser and staff were ace and let us put up our display in one of the tramsheds. Hope tomorrow is good weather. It must be fun playing music riding the trams. |

A great idea to write one about the victim. I was telling Hudson about your idea for a song and he was also intrigued and thought it a brilliant idea. Print the words here or hereabouts. People ought to know about the idea. Some people who make a fortune out of folk music NEVER get an idea that good. Folkiedave - we don't agree. we never shall. let's just agree to disagree. It was a good day. A nice good humoured session in the pub afterwards as well. Julie Felix is really a link to another generation. So many people 'do' Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie - because our generation heard them on firstly record, we don't really get it! This lady really 'uses' those songs. Watching her - one gets the vaguest inkling of what Woody must have been like in those Labour Union Halls. Real folk music. An actual dialogue with the audience. She really is quite excellent, and I was totally unprepared for what I saw. |

Met her at the Gainsborough Festival three years ago, what a lovely lady. Tiny in stature, yet mind-bogglingly powerful in performance. Her performance of 'Boots of Spanish Leather' was brilliant and unforgettable. A true Star. And good to hear Jack Hudson's on form. Would have loved to meet up with him again, but other pressing matters kept me away. |
