Shannon - you can support the Mudcat forum and buy the CD online by clicking on the catfish jumping out of the banjo at the top of the Mudcat Cafe page (Music Boulevard, CDNow, CD Universe).

If you are looking for the lyrics and the chords, try a forum search here (Click on to Forum Seach and Type the name in) -- there was a thread a long time ago, started by me, and answered by the sainted Brenda, Frank in the Swamps and others. It was a life saver at the time!
Yours, Peter T.

To everyone that answered my thread - thanks very much. Your help and effort are greatly appreciated as always. The 'catters have always been good to me so there is never any question of buying music etc anywhere else if the cat can help! Thanks again to everyone, love Shannon

Hi, I really love Lorrena McKinnett's version of Bonny Portmore too. Did anyone come back with the chords or notes for this, if so I would like you to send them to me. Also this is my first attempt at finding lyrics and chords to this sort of music. Do you know any sites where I might find help. Would be really grateful Thanks... Regards ...Jacqui

Your first step would be to type bonny portmore into the "Digitrad and Forum Search" box on the main Forum page; this will get you links to all sorts of very interesting information about the song, including lyrics and a midi of the tune, that people have posted here in the past.

Hi Malcolm,

I have tried the forum search and checked through all the listings on that thread, none of them have the chords as such, although a girl by the name of Becky has tried - I'm not sure how roman numerals equate to chords???

It could be me, as this is the first time in Mudcat, but I've tried most things! If anyone can help that would be great! I play the harp and sing, living down under and would like to find more of lyrics and chords to my fav music - Womens Heart 1 & 2, Celtic Women,Celtic Love Songs Loreena McKinnett, Connie Dover, Deloris Keane, Mary Black etc. So if anyone can help that would be great

Cheers... Jacqui

The address for her official site is, www.quinlanroad.com.
I have been a fan or 6 yrs. now. She is one of the most generous and non commercial talents ever. She has everything on her site.
Enjoy!

Hi Jacqui,
The Roman numerals in Becky's posting relate to the number of the chord in a key. A I chord is the first chord, like a C in the key of C; a IV would be an F, and a V would be a G. A ii would be a D, but because it is in lower case letters, she means a Dminor. If you know the key you want to play it in, you just slot the relevant chords in. Bonny Portmore is:
I-V-ii-IV
I-V-IV-V
ii-I-ii-IV
ii-I-IV-V.

If you were playing it in D, it would be:
D-A-Em-G
D-A-G-A
Em-D-Em-G
Em-D-G-A.

It is pretty easy to hear the places in each line where the chords change.
yours, Peter T.

Bonny Portmore, by Loreena can also be heard on the compilation album "The Sound of Stone" which was issued as a fundraiser by The Burren Action Group, a band of people who sucessfully opposed Irish Government plans to build an "interpretive centre" on the beautiful Burren in Co. Clare. It's a beautiful album, featuring the cream of Irish musicians and Loreena McKennitt, of course.Worth seeking out

PJ - a tip of the hat from an environmentalist over the seas. It was a great project. How did it all turn out?
yours, Peter T.
P.S. Jacqui, you might try varying the IV and V chord with each other occasionally -- the version I did above occasionally sounds not quite right (but there are variations).

By way of background, in an interview George Lyon and I did with Paddy Tutty (published in the Canadian Folk Music Bulletin, vol. 33, no. 2 (June 1999)), Paddy told us that Loreena learned the song from Eileen McGann, Eileen learned it from Paddy, and Paddy got it from a book that she bought while travelling in Ireland.

I'm curious whether anyone learned the song from any other source, and whether anyone else has recorded it (especially having learned it otherwise than from the McKennitt/McGann/Tutty trail).
