BS: Pyrates Royale Major Announcement

02:01 pm - Pyrates Royale Announce Changes.
The popular folk music group the Pyrates Royale are making two changes to the public face of the organization.
First the band name, which has been used since 1992 will now be spelled as Pirates Royal. This change reflects the fact that fans and media outlets have consistently had difficulty using the "y" and the "e". The older spelling may be still seen for a time as the head office still has a fair amount of pre-printed letterhead to go through. The use of the band's popular logo character "Crusty" will not be affected by the change.
The group has decided to augment their performances with the addition of two baton twirllers. This decision was made to try to appeal to a younger audience. The sequined outfits will also add a bit of flash.
The new members, Cindy Merkler and Bob Trample, have extensive experience with combining the beauty of baton and the shanty milieu. The duo did baton work for The Boarding Party during the last five years of their existence. They also performed a 15 minute routine on Good Morning America in 1989, to commemorate the death of Stan Hugill.( Hugill did not actually die until May of 1992, but he sent a personal note thanking them.) We are very pleased to add them to our lineup.
The band will be referred to as Pirates Royal Plus Two in all future performances that include our new twirlers.

Do the baton twirlers have wooden legs (1 each, I mean)?

well - I agree the sequins wqould theoretically add something to the performance - but theory fails since it's you and the captain wearing the sequins, Skivee!

"The duo did baton work for The Boarding Party during the last five years of their existence."

Interesting. I was the manager of The Boarding Party for the last five years of their existence -- and for quite a while before that -- and was married at the time to one of that group's members, and I never heard of these folks, nor was I ever aware of ANYONE doing "baton work" (whatever that is) for the BP.

Just thought I'd mention that.

Clearly you should take another look at those old publicity photos, Nancy. I'm sure that Cindy and Bob must be in them somewhere!

Do they use flaming batons, or just the plain old unlit kind?

I guess that would depend on if we were firing black powder. Not much point in having flame if there isn't stuff to burn.

If you can figure out how to get it through customs and things I'll send you a pound or two of black powder. I've got some in my basement.

(Five pounds of it. 2F, 3F, and 4F.)

Oughta change that name to "Iron Pyrites-Royal" if this announcement is any indication of the state of things.

I want to see Crusty in sequins.

Is that anything like the old John Wayne movie "Back To Baton"?

And Bill, "Pyrites Royale-Their Golden Hits" is rumored to be the title of their "best of" CD, as well as their official spelling for April 1st.

Crusty in proper sequins or merely in numerical order?

So, now that you have majorettes, are you opening your sets with "Pom Pom Circumstance"?

"Pom Pom Circumstance"?
We do then, but we are not allowed to do any but the 3rd and 4th march. Something about the "personal Injury" clause in the insurance waiver.
I am also writing an old traditional shanty about batoning down hatches as we go round the horn section...or something; I haven't decided yet.

I hope that whoever you have working the majorettes knows how to operate them. There's nothing will kill a show faster than something going wrong with majorettes' strings.

I'm also interested in this baton work that was done by the Boarding Party. It's the 1st I've ever heard of it too & knowing Nancy, if it's about the BP & it's something she doesn't know about, I'm thinking it's somehing that didn't happen.
Anyway, this Baton thing, I'm curious & can't quite wrap my brain around it (I perform in a shanty duo). How does this tie into a Pirate or Shanty theme? I can better see a duo tossing/juggling knives at each other.

Barry-

Once you've seen Pyrates Royale perform, it all becomes clear. Almost anything is possible with this group.

I have several of their CD's that I picked up in Baltimore. They appeared to be handsomely attired from the very best Renaissance catalogs. The vast majority of songs were actually traditional style shanties and forebitters, with only a few "pirate" songs. But, then, I don't suppose real pirates actually sang "pirate" songs. However, Stuart Frank did manage to assemble quite a collection, most of them broadside based but a few romantic Victorian songs as well, in his fine book.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Seems to me I traveled down from Philly to the DC Navy Yard some years ago to see a performance of The Boarding Party related to the replica ship The Dove. Weren't the baton people part of that show? In fact, didn't one of the flaming batons nearly set fire to Bob Hitchcock's hair?

You should ask Bob. I'm SURE he'll remember!

That must have been the only time I went to see them. I was held up in traffic and missed the fuss. A friend gave me some photos, but they were lost when a water heater collapsed on them.
Bob was supposed to have been pretty chuffed about it at the time.
Now he refuses to speak of it, denying that anything happened at all.
