I disconnected the bathroom sink and toilet. There is an outhouse. There are sdishes to be washed. Another lawn to mow.... I just sold my bike (ATV)... drive that around the yard and flatten the tall grass. Not all of it, of course. It's cover for the rabbits and partridge and snakes and such. Plus, the clover brings moose and deer to feed. See that screened in porch? When the sun is on that, you can sip and ale in the leather LazyBoy recliner and the animals don't know you are there. We need toilet paper and we're miles from a store.... WHAT?!!! Swipe is on the TOP of my list. If you run out, ask gnu - he's got a shitload on hand. Buy worms... Fly fishing does not require worms. Now, if ya really NEED bait, just crank the bike up to about 80kph and smile a big grin. Then, pick the bugs outta yer teeth... bait. Clean guns... not necessary unless you take them outta the case. As for bears in the middle of the night, I find a flashlight and a golf club quite sufficient. Where did I put those canoe paddles?... the last canoe I was in was this one. This life-vest smells funny.... see "canoe" above. Although, my buddy's young fellah does fish with worms. Dunno why he put them in my ATV box, but I found them two weeks later. Even the plastic box smells like rotten worms... two years later. Gotta get the snowmobile an oil change... snowmobiling is a rich man's sport, sooooo, don't got nuthin to do with me! Aren't you breathing easier now?... yees!! Didn't know I was THAT lucky. Hehehehehe. Fireflies from the ground to the tree tops, so thick that you could sit in the porch and watch the nightlife. Buck rabbits fighting for hours. Bald eagle perched over the river on a pine crag twenty feet away. Perrigrine falcon hunting from the upper deck railing. Bear living under the camp. That fuckin Whipoorwill singing incessantly all night long. The Canada Jays eating from my hand. Swamp Donkey "Ralph II" taking sugar and carrots from my hand... all one thousand pounds of him. The ruffed grouse hen with her chicks. The six point buck white tailed deer that wanted to fight me. The night my bro and I got drunk on Alfred Lamb's Palm Breeze Amber Rum and Talked about long passed Dad until dawn. The RCMP SWAT team that were after the local members of the Kent County Grass Growers Association. Sleeping in the LazyBoy in the porch and being awakened by the high pitched whine of a billion skeeter wings with only the screen to save me from certain death. Banging pans and dishes at zero dark hundred hours and singing old trad tunes... louder and louder as the complaints grew from the lads who were up far too late the night before. I warned them. The night that Mr. Peanut arrived and the lads were laughing so hard that they had to go outside to pee and catch their breath. The fucking sunflower seeds that brought the mice. The mouse that ran from me and tried to run between Rocky's feet and... sniff... That's just a tiny snippet. I am so glad I bought it and now have those memories. Thanks for the posts and the PMs. Essentially, now, The Mudcat Café is my camp.... Max's camp, of course. I'll cook, but, I still don't do dishes. |

03 Apr 08 - 08:39 PM (#2306016) Subject: RE: BS: gnu sold the camp... sniff From: Little Hawk Gnu, the thing about using the golf club to ward off bears....I hope you weren't serious about that? I would think a bear would simply become infuriated if whacked by a golf club, and an infuriate bear is not a good thing. Seems to me that the best thing would be to beat a pot or pan with something and make a bunch of racket afore you goes out thar in the dark. The bear will hear the racket and move off a ways, because bears know that humans can sometimes be quite dangerous. Wouldn't that be a lot better way than letting the bear come to you and then hitting him with a golf club? |

And, no, firin a 12ga shotgun over a bear in the middle of the night don't bother the neighbours... it's the backwoods of Kent County. Speakin a night creatures, ever play with bats? It sounds like a good way of committing suicide to me. And I don't get the distinction between the 5 iron and the 12 iron, because I'm not a golfer. Which one is the larger of the two? And what's the point of the flashlight? Do you shine it in the bears' eyes, thus blinding him, and then whack him in the goolies with the golf club? And then what happens next? Nothing good, I expect. Have any of these bears taken legal action against you following such an incident? |
04 Apr 08 - 10:51 AM (#2306461) Subject: RE: BS: gnu sold the camp... sniff From: gnu LH... hehehehe. A 5 iron is a golf club. A 12 iron is a twelve guage shotgun. Mine IS bigger. A Russian made (the Ruskies make the best shotguns in the world) over and under, 26" vent rib, full & modified, double trigger. Light as a feather. Makes a fair bit of noise. 04 Apr 08 - 07:54 PM (#2306892) Subject: RE: BS: gnu sold the camp... sniff From: gnu Just got a couple of PMs... No. I ain't shittin ya. That's what bears do. They eat. And, if you are handy and if they don't know what a badass a human is, they will try ta eat ya. It's in their statement of duties and qualifications. That is just the way it is. And, no, black bears are not necessarily "more scared of you than you are of them". They are second on the food chain here in New Brunswick... and, if you don't know what you are doing, they are first on the food chain. Simple arithmetic. That is why people get eaten by bears. It's not news. It's just stupidity. |
04 Apr 08 - 09:29 PM (#2307026) Subject: RE: BS: gnu sold the camp... sniff From: Rapparee Out here #2 on the food chain is either a mountain lion or a grizz, with black bears at 2.5. Do something stupid and any one of the three becomes #1 and you become #10...thousand. They chased three (3) mountain lions off the University Campus earlier this week. Nobody would have been concerned except that the cats were in the dorm area. |

04 Apr 08 - 09:55 PM (#2307054) Subject: RE: BS: gnu sold the camp... sniff From: Little Hawk This is the way I always figured it was with bears. So what would you recommend? |

05 Apr 08 - 07:02 AM (#2307264) Subject: RE: BS: gnu sold the camp... sniff From: gnu Allen Sherman! That guy made me laugh until I...... LH... do a search for past threads on bears. Lots of good info from 'Cats on those... the best method is to fire a shot a safe distance to the side of them and in front of them so that it clearly demonstrates that you are not just barking empty threats. If you don't have a gun (stupid idea if you are in bear country = where I go), avoidance is best. There are places where bears hang out and knowing what to look out for... well, a bit too long to type out here, but, I'll share a couple... When old lumber roads are grown up, you sometimes see a "trail" a few feet wide on them. If the trail has a lot of softwood and looks like a tunnel about 4 feet tall, get the hell away without delay on accounta you don't wanna mess with the large boar that hunts this "bear tunnel." Similarly, if you notice logs from blowdown or lumbering are moved around and there are no leaves or needles and such where the ground has been disturbed, leave the area. And remember, the bigger the log, the bigger the bear. There are more, but you get the pic. A few more random thoughts..... When you encounter a bear, knowing it's intent helps. If it runs, it's obvious. But, still vacate the area. If it moves away slowly, but not definitely away from you, wait until it is out of site and and retreat as quickly as you can without making too much noise. If it moves toward you slowly without growling and it's looking at you and your surroundings, well, hope you said nice things to your loved ones before you left. Always carry a small hatchet. Get behind a tree. Kick or throw dirt in it's face. I never did this with a bear, but it works well with moose (no dirt required) on accounta they got four legs. Four legs run faster than two, but can't side shuffle worth a shit. Also, even though black bears climb trees, I suppose it's better than being on the ground and I suppose a hatchet, dirt, sharp stick would work well from above. Never yell at a bear. Of course, never travel alone. Move apart a bit and make it look like you are hunting in a pack (never tried it... just a thought). Finally... throw the Dachshund at it! |
05 Apr 08 - 06:50 PM (#2307849) Subject: RE: BS: gnu sold the camp... sniff From: Little Hawk I think the dachshund would serve as an excellent distraction. ;-) For one thing, dachshunds often make a hell of a lot of noise when they're upset, and that would help draw the bear's attention to the dog, I shoud think, allowing the human to discreetly withdraw. On the other hand, a frightened dachshund will often run straight to its owner for protection, so that could be a problem. You have confirmed exactly what I always suspected about bears. I don't want to meet them at all, period, ever... and I want a good 30/30 in my hands loaded and ready if I'm ever in bear country and on foot. |
05 Apr 08 - 07:50 PM (#2307893) Subject: RE: BS: gnu sold the camp... sniff From: gnu Good choice. A Dirty Thirty is only 6 3/4 pounds and short enough so that, on a sling on yer back, it's no bother at all in cover or open. Just make sure yer barrel is down and yer load is against ya. Other than all that, bears are some fun ta watch. Fascinating creatures. Quite smart. Especially the old ones. (The old boars are usually docile and they don't care at all about you unless ya bother them.) Fun, unless they get in yer fruit trees. They can kill a dozen apple trees in a day. Even if ya got em shored with page wire wrap. Them bears'll rip a tree, wire n all, without breathin heavy, because they can. Oh, yeah... never panic and shoot one unless you have to. It's just tryin to eat a livin too, right, eh? |
05 Apr 08 - 08:18 PM (#2307906) Subject: RE: BS: gnu sold the camp... sniff From: Little Hawk Oh, I wouldn't shoot unless he was definitely heading my way with violent intention. Like you said, if he's looking right at you and moving slowly towards you...or charging. |
