18 May 99 - 02:27 AM (#79372) Subject: Lyr Add: ROLLIN' A-ROLLIN' (sung by Golden Ring) From: Sandy Paton ROLLIN' A-ROLLIN' (Child #10 - The Twa Sisters) There lived an old lord by the Northern Sea, Rollin', a-rollin', And he had daughters, one, two, and three, Down by the waters a-rollin'.
Similarly:
Two little sisters, side by side,
Now, Johnny brought the old one a beaver hat,
Then Johnny brought the young one a gay gold ring;
"Oh, sister, oh, sister, let's walk the seashore,
Two little sisters walking downstream;
Down she sank and away she swam;
The miller he took her by the hand,
The miller took off her gay gold ring,
The miller was hung on the gallows so high;
Thus endeth my tale of the North Countrie;
Recorded by the Golden Ring - CD-16 - Folk-Legacy Records.

Did you see Bassen's painstaking contribution of a long Norwegian version - in this thread: a' bhean eudach, Horpa, the Two Sisters ? |

There was no way that I wanted to type all that if the text was already nestled there in some obscurely titled oblivion. I saw the version (pretty close, anyway) that I collected from Horton Barker many years ago, contributed by Greenhaus himself. Now there's a guy with excellent taste in ballad texts! His taste in parodies, however... (are you reading this, Dick?) That's the "Two Sisters" that Horton sings on the Folkways album I produced the year before Folk-Legacy got started, thirty-eight years ago. Time flies when you're having fun! Sandy |
