Subject: St. Georges day-Upnor, Kent UK
From: Don(Wyziwyg)T

Wednesday 23rd April 2008

A ST. GEORGE'S DAY celebration at the KINGS ARMS, Upnor, NR. Rochester Kent.

Rob (The Landlord) and "Wysiwyg" (Don Thompson) will be pleased to see all who are interested in good music and good ale.

From 4-5pm (depending on who is there) until dropping like flies time (approx. 11.00pm.......ish)

Come along in your droves (or your cars, or on foot, we're not fussy), and enjoy an evening of drinking, and singing, and drinking, and playing, and....well, you know what I mean.

Recover on Thursday, then your presence will be greatly appreciated at the BEER FESTIVAL which takes place on Friday 25th evening), and Saturday 26th (all day from 11.00am).

How can you resist???

Don T.

TDL,

Snodland is on the Tuesday the 22nd, so yes, I'm going to knock meself out, but I COULD do with all the help I can get.

I covered the last event solo, and although it went very well, I think a little variety would be good.

So who's up for it.

The more the merrier, and the choice of ales on the last two occasions was excellent.

Nice to hear Bishop Gundulphs will be in it, Dilligaf. Look forward to seeing you there.

We don't seem to hear much from The Barden these days, but he has the Gloucester Morrismen down soon, and the Greyhound is hosting their visit, as before. Can somebody in the know please fill in details of date and time for me?

Don - The Gloucester Morris men will be with me at the session in the Greyhound, Wheeler Street, Maidstone on Friday 18th. April from about 8pm, and then all day Saturday 19th. April finishing up with a session at 'The Swan' County Road, Maidstone once again from about 8pm.

Not been around much lately as work is really hectic at the moment and I all my waking hours seem to be taken up by it. I even didn't spend Easter at The Fareham Folk Festival, and the caravan has yet to have an outing! I will however be appearing at the Orpington Folk Club on Thursday 17th. April -

And then of course Rochester Sweeps. Hope to see you soon.

Mr Grumpy - We have Don-Centric circles in this part of Kent. I bit like concentric circes, without the con. He's run some fair old clubs in his time, and writes some great songs to boot. Good man you are Don.

We got pissed on the plane, we got pissed again, at The Hotel Torresmolinos,

We ain't been bleedin' sober since the moment we came over to The Hotel Torresmolinos, etc., etc.....

I shall be back from my travels by St. George's Day. Expect an appearance or two from me, ideally with Growler.

John B, Thanks for the testimonial. Modesty forbids etc.

Growler and Melodion Boy, I was hoping for that. You will as always liven things up considerably, as well as saving me from a likely week of voicelessness.

Mr. Grumpy, You wouldn't by any chance be the same Mr G with whom I have sometimes locked horns on the F1 forum?

I have just spoken to the Shirt Murderer . He is of for a week, with the crew of U87, and is being paid to sing and play heartily, wilst eating bananas, every time a ship is sunk. He has promised to be there, on Georges Day. My advice is' Don't park your boat near Upnor Castle   ALARM!!!!!!

If you are trying to make a comment on my involvement in this event, why not just come out with it.

Maybe I'm thick, but I don't have a clue what your problem is.

The landlord asked me to try to organise some music for this event and that is what I am doing. If you have a problem with that, tell me what it is.

If you think you can do better, be my guest. I'll bow out and tell Rob to ask you in future.

Kev,

I have the greatest of respect for you, and you certaimly still feature in my list of good guys.

Richard, who was once counted among friends with whom I occasionally disagreed, seems to have a problem with my participation in the Upnor event.

As I said, Rob asked ME to arrange music. He didn't tell me what other arrangements had been made, and I can't advertise what I do not know will happen.

Instead of contact by PM, Mr. Grumpy (how apt) chose to make cryptic comments on thread, which I did not understand, since I was not party to his multiple personas (which, I believe, are frowned upon in this community).

Now that I know, I intend to inform Rob that he has the services of the GUARDIAN of the TRADITION, and therefore has no further need of my services. Much good may it do him.

I shall look forward to seeing you at Aylesford, in June.

I am grateful that you, at least, set me straight as to the identity of the grumpy one.

P.S.

I am sure the worthy Mr. Bridge will count the absence of what he disparagingly calls a "snigger/snogwriter" no loss at all.

Rob, however, may well remember that the "snigger/snogwriter" in question has featured heavily in all his events, and in the middle of the winter, performed solo for three hours outdoors, at the last one.

Don, I have no trouble with participation. No trouble with contribution.

I have a lot of trouble with self importance. With monopolisation, with empire building.

I have deleted a lot else I was going to say, but let me stick strictly to answering your question what it was that offended me, as it stood at the time it was asked.

Well, Mr. Grumpy,

In spite of the fact that I was doing what The landlord, Rob, had asked me to do, and doing so with a limited knowledge (it would now seem) of what else was going on, you choose , in your infinite wisdom to call it self importance, and monopolisation.

I wouldn't dream of interfering in YOUR little empire, so I wash my hands of it.

You may explain my departure from the scene to Rob in any way you wish. I'm sure your keen legal mind will come up with something that makes you seem in the right.

If my fascist boss lets me off the leash I should be there to add a bit of traditional decorum to what I can only assume will be a total debacle without me :-)

Dear Dead Horse, to refer to one,s wife as a fascist boss is I,m afraid politically incorrect, Kay is in fact a very nice person. And if she has you on a leash then I am sure you asked her to do it and what you do in your private lives should not be broadcast on Mudcat,
Rob you will all be happy to know can handle his way round a real ale barrel much better than he can a keyboard and a computor, the selection of ales is GOOD if not FANTASTIC he has gone to a lot of trouble to get patriotic beers lots of Dragons in names so even those who don,t sing or play can join me in getting pi**ed around the fire.

I shall be needin some REAL ale after suffering from frostbite of the lips drinkin Bud, Coors and other nameless and instantly forgettable frozen "mosquito wee wees" that is the staple diet this side of the Bayou Atlantique.
Nearest to palatable is imported Newky Broon, sadly also frozen so as to take the taste out of it.
I did ask the nice perty barmaid to microwave me a pint, but she just thought I was a crazy English person and wanted to know which part of Australia I was from !!!
Also, I should warn Dilligaff that ale and open fires do not mix well.
Evaporation, you know.

You'll like this open fire mate. In December, with the temperature down in single figures (centigrade) we had a cozy evening around the fire in Rob's garden. It kept the temp steady enough that my guitar didn't lose tune, but I didn't notice any reduction in beer volume, except through ingestion.

A carefully chosen position upwind of the fire, and keeping the instrument in its gigbag (which collected some fine white ash, but no burns) between songs did the trick for me, though I can foresee circumstances where there might be problems.

Fingers crossed for dry weather, at least.

It is always advisable to keep your intrument covered when not in use if outside, but if you are playing with it or have allowed someone else to play with it it is best out, to reiterate what Don said.

Regrettably, due to that continuing problem with some of my teeth that some of you know about, I am now on a course of taking both ampicillin and metronidazole.

Metronidazole is closely related to the basic components of antabuse, the drug used to prevent alcoholics from drinking (some might say there was some justice in there).

The relationship of metronidazole with alcohol can be summarised: -

"Consuming ethanol (alcohol) while using metronidazole causes a disulfiram-like reaction with effects that can include nausea, vomiting, flushing of the skin, tachycardia (accelerated heart rate), shortness of breath, and even death.[5] Consumption of alcohol should be avoided by patients during systemic metronidazole therapy and for at least 24 hours after completion of treatment.[1] However, the mechanism of this reaction in the clinical setting has recently been questioned by some authors,[6][7] and a possible central toxic seratonin reaction for the alcohol intolerance suggested.[8]"

I am therefore off alcohol - although the course will be over in time for me to drink on the 1st May and at Sweeps.

So I may well not be very jovial company on Friday or Saturday.

Richard, is that the stuff that turns your urine very bright yellow? If so do not under any circumstances drink alcohol. Hope to make it Saturday.

A tool head bush, Don? Now that sounds really rude (SNARFF, SNARFF!).

I had a great time on Wednesday (as did Growler). Thanks to all concerned. I shall try to get over again this weekend.

Yes, that's the stuff that turns your urine yellow. Speak from experience. Unfortunately it also brings me out in an itchy red rash so I don't take ant penicillin based drugs now. Richard will be ok as long as nobody even offers him a pint, so don't. Trevor has some replacement heads that are nameless, but thry look like Grovers. He's going to put one on later, and see if it works, otherwise we'll try your Schallers Richard, thanks. See you sll tomorrow, weather's going to be ace.

Sorry folks. I've just arrived home to find my wife in bed, shivering, vomiting, and all the other things you do when you connect with a nasty bug, so I will for this evening be conspicuous by my absence.

All that ARE gong, have a great evening.

I will be over tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks Richard, I've found a head off an old strat that fits, although it turns counterwise, that will do until I manage to get a replacement from Grover (anyone know what the turnaround time is postwise to Ohio?). I'm back in business and looking forward to tomorrow. hope your Hampsteads are feeling better anyway. - Len

Oh, Amoxycillin's all right. The bugger is teh metronidazole. My dentist, who is a moslem, likes to give me some before the highlights of the folk drinking season, to prevent me drinking alcohol. I think she plans to convert me in due course.

How did today go ? We were thinking of you in the rather inclement weather today. Although it rained this afternoon, we had to have the doors open at the White Hart because the landlord has still got the C. H. on full blast.

Thanks again for the tuning head Richard, have now got a replacement from Grover (2 weeks turnaround - not too shabby from the Banks of the Ohio!) I have your spare head in my guitar bag - remind me when we meet again.

"I have your spare head in my guitar bag"

Blimey, that's frightening, even by TDL's standards! I'd better make sure my doors are locked at night!

(By the way, is it any better-looking than the main one?)

The other loose end to update from that event is whether Don succeeded in getting the odd-sized ferrule onto his guitar to replace the missing one. Does anyone know?
