A Star Is Born...

Yesterday, for the tiny sum of $10 I got to hear Gordon Bok, Michael Cooney and a host of other "greats" performing at a benefit for Utah Phillips. The crowd was WOWed (quite literally) by a new face, none other than our own Jacqui Morse who performed Miner's Lullaby and Phoebe Snow with the aid of a really cute guitar back-up. (I didn't catch his name)

Honestly, Jacqui and Kendall had the crowd in the palm of their hands. And later, while I was manning the CD bench, two different couples asked if I had any Jacqui Morse recordings.

Well done, Captain and Mrs. Morse. Really well done.

Good for the two of you ! It is often the case that the right partner can be a great help in a Performance - And Kendal seems to have been an excellent influence on Jacqui's performance !

I was as nervous as a Christan Scientist with a severed artery but she was as cool as a cucumber.

Actually, Jacqui brings out the best in Kendall. He was Kendall Morse, Storyteller and Folk Singer. I haven't seen that side of the Captain in years.

And the two of them are so obviously in love. It was a very special performance. For anyone interested, it will be podcast on Saturday. Anyone have the details?

Maeve it was up in Blue Hill - a long drive, but worth it.

I got quite apprehensive - Jay Peterson opened the show, followed by Michael Cooney and then the church pastor (sorry, his name escapes me), who was very very funny. We were on next and it really was a case of 'follow that!'. I had been practicing the songs a lot, particularly on beach walks with Seamus - helps the breath control no end, singing while walking at a reasonable pace over sand, but there was still the fear of drying up out there in front of a paying audience. I think that I was just relieved to get through both songs without incident.

Kendall was great - he got in front of the audience, the switch went on and there was the consummate performer doing his job perfectly. He gave me so much confidence that, once we were there, it was so natural, I just forgot the audience and sang for him.

I must admit that I got one hell of a kick out of it and I'm still floating. That has to rate as one of the really good days of my life.

Jay tells me that the concert will be put out on a local radio station sometime during the next month and he'll give me details once he gets them. I'll put the details here once he comes back to me.

By the way, he also tells me that they had a three inch think pile of $20, $10 notes and cheques so there should be a nice bit of cash to go the Utah. We sold a few DVDs and could have sold more if we had had them so that's all extra for Utah's pot as well.

Ah, I love Blue Hill. Used to drive there regularly for shows at The Left Bank.

I'm so very glad it went well.

Trust me, she was fantastic! As they were leaving the stage, Kendall turned around and said: "As you can probably tell, Jacqui isn't from around here. What you don't know is that this is her first public performance." He was beaming all over.

Sorry to rant on but I have given a lot of thought to Sunday and come to a very interesting conclusion.
Kendall and Jacqui have performed those songs at my home many times and it is always a pleasure. But Saturday night their goal was to get the audience as involved in the lyrics as they were. They stopped worrying about being on key or running out of breath or sneezing mid-performance and focussed out on their listeners.
That plus the audience's genuine affection for Utah phillips made magic.
Every once in a while a performance is magic. That's what Sunday was.

I wish I could have been there.

Philosophy:
Often, all you need to grab an audience and calm your nerves is the belief that you HAVE to sing the song. I did that at Rick's memorial. If it had just been me singing a song, I would have messed up, but I had to do it. I didn't want to let anyone down. Spiritual imperative can work magic, and it sounds like you had it, Jacqui.
