I will miss his great job of acting on that show and remember him fondly. RIP, Mr. Kamel...well done and gone too young. 'Monk' psychiatrist actor Stanley Kamel dies at 65 The Associated Press Article Launched: 04/09/2008 02:39:24 PM PDT LOS ANGELES—Stanley Kamel, who played Adrian Monk's long-suffering psychiatrist on the TV detective show "Monk," has died. He was 65. Kamel was found dead of a heart attack in his Hollywood Hills home on Tuesday by his agents, publicist Cynthia Snyder said in a statement. Kamel, born on Jan. 1, 1943, in New Brunswick, N.J., had a nearly four-decade acting career, much of it on television. He had a recurring role as an unscrupulous psychiatrist, Dr. Graham Lester, in the 1995 television series "Murder One," and other recurring roles on "Days of Our Lives," "Melrose Place" and "Beverly Hills 90210" as well as smaller roles on many other shows. Kamel began acting off-Broadway and got his first television break playing Eric Peters on "Days of Our Lives" in the 1970s. He appeared in several movies. For several years, he portrayed Dr. Charles Kroger on the USA Network series "Monk." As Kroger, he dispensed advice during weekly therapy sessions to Monk (Tony Shalhoub), a brilliant but neurotic private detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder. "Stanley was an amazingly talented and extremely kind man, and an important member of the USA family. He will be sorely missed," the network said in a statement. Kamel is survived by his brothers, Stephen and Robert |

I wonder how they're going to treat his death on the show. Monk is very dependent on his psychiatrist; this will be devastating for the character. "Monk" has a significent folk music connection. The show's creator, Andy Breckman, sings, plays guitar, writes songs, has traveled the coffeehouse circuit and has made a couple of CDs. |

I wonder, too, how the Monk character will deal with this. As you say, he is so dependent on Kamel's character. It's just sad...he really was a wonderful actor. |

In the "Monk" series he was an important part of the mix that creates the chemistry of the show. I hope the writers are wise enough to not just write him out and a new character in but let the audience share in the mourning for the role-character as well as the man. May he always rest in peace and may his family be consoled in part by knowing what great joy and pure entertainment he brought to millions. I loved his over-the-top rendition of "John Henry"! |
10 Apr 08 - 10:16 PM (#2312607) Subject: RE: Obit: Monk's psychiatrist(actor) Stanley Kamel From: katlaughing I'd forgotten that he was in Star Trek-The Next Generation and a slew of other shows. Here's a bit more info: Actor Stanley Kamel, who died of a heart attack Tuesday, had a special bond with his "Monk" co-star, Emmy winner Tony Shalhoub. Kamel played Dr. Kroger opposite Shalhoub as his obsessive-compulsive patient, Det. Adrian Monk. "Stanley Kamel's consumate talent and professionalism was only surpassed by his warmth, humor and generosity of spirit," Shalhoub said in a statement. "I will miss him terribly." Kamel was found dead of a heart attack in his Hollywood home Tuesday by his long time agents and friends, Donna Massetti and Marilyn Szatmary, his representatives said. He was 65 years old. Kamel and Shalhoub had many scenes together as doctor and patient that were pivotal to the development of Monk's character on the show. Kamel said once that both actors were always deeply in character in even their funniest scenes. "For the most part when we're working together - because of the fact that we're in the moment as doctor and patient - it isn't until after I look at it sometimes that I see that it's funny because we're both in there playing it for truth," Kamel said in a video interview on USA Network's Web site. Kamel was born in New Brunswick, N.J., on Jan. 1, 1943. He has appeared in numerous TV roles over the past three decades, including "The West Wing," "Six Feet Under," "Melrose Place," "The Golden Girls," "Days of Our Lives" and "Murder One." One of his favorite roles was as Mark Gilliam, an activist attorney with AIDS on five episodes of the drama "L.A. Law." It was one of the first times that a character with AIDs was depicted on television. "It was an extraordinary opportunity because as an actor I got to go to some very deep places that actors don't always get to go," Kamel said. "At that time, no one had ever seen a character have AIDS. Ultimately, my character decided to sue the insurance company because they were withholding medication that could change his life, because they were experimental." The USA Network released a statement saying that "Stanley was an amazingly talented and extremely kind man, and an important member of the USA family. He will be sorely missed." Kamel is survived by his brothers, Dr. Stephen Kamel and Robert Kamel; five nieces and nephews; and six grand-nieces and nephews. |
11 Apr 08 - 09:19 AM (#2312884) Subject: RE: Obit: Monk's psychiatrist(actor) Stanley Kamel From: Cool Beans My wife, a psychotherapist, agrees that they should write Dr. Kroger's death into the show. Monk, she says, would have to transfer his bundle of needs onto another psychiatrist--not easily accomplished but it does happen in real life. Fortunately, she says, Monk has a support system in his assistant, Natalie, and his police department friends/colleagues Leland and Randy. |
11 Apr 08 - 11:35 AM (#2313001) Subject: RE: Obit: Monk's psychiatrist(actor) Stanley Kamel From: Greg B Once in the series, Dr. Kroger made up his mind to retire. That plot is likely a foreshadowing of things to come. 'Monk' is scheduled for a summer season--- this past year was cut short by the writer's strike, I believe. I wonder if it's currently in production, or if they'll have the full hiatus to figure out what to do? The folk music connection explains Capt. Leland Stottlemeyer's flirtation with folk music, a sometimes humorous interlude, and perhaps his Lieutenant's 'garage band' pretense. Monk's scenes with Dr. Kroger were key features of the plots, being a handy way to conduct some exposition without any need to 'work it in.' They're going to have to replace him. I wonder if they'll kill him off in some dramatic fashion, to give Monk a 'case' to solve. Stanley Kamel would probably enjoy that. |
11 Apr 08 - 12:23 PM (#2313058) Subject: RE: Obit: Monk's psychiatrist(actor) Stanley Kamel From: katlaughing Yes, I think they will have to let his character die and let fans and Monk deal with it, together. There is a message board HERE on which folks have been posting condolences. There are a lot of nice quotes, poems, and pictures posted. Apparently Kamel used to post there as himself and visit with the fans. Quite a decent person from the sounds of it...much like his character in some ways. Tonight's rerun episode is titled "Monk gets a new shrink" but I don't remember it. New episodes don't start until mid-July. |

Well if anyone gets more info PLEASE post it here!!!!! |
17 Apr 08 - 03:48 AM (#2318018) Subject: RE: Obit: Monk's psychiatrist(actor) Stanley Kamel From: GUEST,Griff, Las Vegas I believe that most of the time actors who pass away in real life are simply replaced with other actors. My guess is that the producers of Monk will make a notable and conspicuous exception. Unlike a dime-a-dozen character such as a detective or DA on "Law and Order," many of whom are expected to be replaced as they climb their vocational ladders, Stanley Kamel's character development cannot be adequately replaced by another actor. While it may be slightly over-the-top to "kill off his character" and allow Monk to solve the crime, I wouldn't be surprised if he were allowed to pass away from natural causes and cause Monk serious consternation. His passing might even be a catalyst for Monk becoming more focused and ultimately solving Trudy's murder, which, sadly to say, we all know will be the ultimate conclusion to the masterful series. |
17 Apr 08 - 10:40 AM (#2318276) Subject: RE: Obit: Monk's psychiatrist(actor) Stanley Kamel From: katlaughing I agree. They couldn't replace John Ritter's character in 8 Simple Rules, either. Both actors and their characters were just irreplaceable. |

His slow, patient attitude that didn't quite work. Watching Monk drive him nuts faster than he could cure Monk was one of my favourite bits. It will be very hard to replace Stanley Kamel. |

I clicked on it and realized it was Michelle Pfeiffer, a co-star in something. When you click on his bio, he's actually one of those unusual kinds of Hollywood actors who is married to a woman about his same age and next year is 40 years. Pretty rare out there in LaLa Land. (I see that he was in two brief marriages before this one). SRS |
