14 Apr 08 - 06:11 PM (#2315615) Subject: RE: Jackie and Bridie Song Books From: kytrad (Jean Ritchie) Jacqui and Bridie have been our friends for many years- they always had an East Coast tour each fall, and either began or finished their trip at our house and we'd get them to Kennedy Airport when their stay was over. Jacqui began her career as a singer when she was a young girl, as the "girl singer" with the Spinners, and was their star for some time. She then went on her own, and met Bridie when they were both teaching school. They began singing duets here and there, then teamed up as, "Jacqui and Bridie," and were extremely popular and successful in the beginnings and right on through the "Folk Revival" years. Their records, CDs and books are here in our shelves. Bridie died of cancer several years ago; Jacqui has continued to do solo tours until two or three years ago. Her friend Lynn travelled with her on these trips, and occasionally joined in a few songs with her. They always call us via phone at least every Thanksgiving, and their last call was an apology for not coming that year (2007), as Jacqui was in poor health. I have emailed them recently but no answer has come yet- I hope they're well. Jacqui and Bridie were I feel were important voices on the British folk scene of their musical years. They always ran a coffee house, at whatever community in which they lived through that time- gave good music, education, and fun to many, and jobs to hundreds of other singers. They knew much about English songs, folklore history, customs, folk performers and folklorists. Loved dogs, flowers, people, jokes and funny stories,travelling, and above all, loved folks, and music. |

The album title is from the Peggy Seeger song of the same name, but the version of the song isn't the one Peggy claimed to have written much later with watered-down lyrics!! The album is mid-70s, but I think Peggy lists the song as being written in 1992. Jacqui occasionally gigs with Hughie Jones - she is an ex-member of The Spinners (Liverpool, not Detroit!). Which reminds me... does anyone know how Hughie is since the removal of one of his lungs? |

For those unaware of Jacqui & Bridie, there's a a fine tribute to them from Jean Ritchie, no less, at the start of this thread 12 years ago. I have happy memories of their regular visits to the Marsden Inn folk club in the 60s- always great fun, unpretentious entertainment! Probably not up to current perceptions of folk music, but different days & great to hear her again. |

I remember playing their club in Liverpool back then; it was in some old church hall. At the end of the night they asked us back to their place for coffee. There were as many people there as had been in the club. |
