Don't forget that there are new people coming on, and people generally moving about. On the storytelling side there is Tim Ralphs, a young and very up-and-coming talent; like me he has been active in Whitby's story-a-rounds in the Ship Inn. There is also Annamation (hope I've spelt that correctly), a trio of young lady storytellers. I saw them at Taffy's festival in the Lake District and they were excellent. I don't know all of the new people in the song and music sections but if they are of the same standard as these young storytellers then we can expect an excellent festival. Diane |

I was aware of it, but there's nothing on the website about it - does anyone know anything? I've not emailed themselves yet but thought some on here might have some experience/knowledge... |

It sounds like the best place to start for enquiries re the hiring fair. However, I have also heard that places get booked very quickly. Failing getting onto that there are any number of good singarounds where it is helpful to go and get experience and hope that maybe you get noticed. A lot can depend on your age. There are quite a number of competitions open to performers at various festivals round the country, particularly for those who are under 25. However, for those of us who are longer in the tooth some competitions are open to all ages, such as the competition for traditional singers at Saltburn Folk Festival. Competitive performing is a really good way to move forward. I had a go at Saltburn a few years ago. Although I didn't win (I was soooo nervous that I forgot the words to one of my songs!) it was really good experience for me as it forced me to try and work my skills up to a good standard and performing in a different environment is good experience. After the competition I found that people had started to take notice of me and although it didn't lead to paid work it did lead to people inviting me to lots of singarounds and generally getting more experience. Hope I see you again, maybe at Whitby. I'm working on my Scottish material. This week I've sung "Fit can a young lassie", "My son David", and "Bonnie Glenshee" at local clubs, plus told a story. Had an operation on my left eye earlier this year, so been in the wars slightly but recovering. Had my stitches out earlier this month and my surgeon has allowed me to sing again now. It was so frustrating not being allowed to sing... I'm looking forward to Whitby. I know most of the storytellers and am looking forward to working with them. It's great seeing old friends again. I've been booked as a storyteller for Whitby and have plenty of wonderful stories ready for the week and still have time to add a few more to my repertoire. Am in the process of working on a few songs so can add a song or two to my programme where the venue is appropriate, such as the Family Club maybe. Depends on which venues the organisers place me in. I was at the Globe Folk Club in Guisborough last night. They loved my story - it went down a storm. A lovely singaround evening, very mellow. I'll be doing a spot of storytelling in Saltburn for the festival, in the library, for the youngsters. I look forward to that. Probably means I won't get to the singing competition but hopefully will see you at the festival anyway. Also in Whitby! I'll be at the folk festival in Nature's World, Middlesbrough as well, giving a workshop on storytelling. Hoping someone turns up for it!! Cheers! Diane |

Make sure you get to plenty of singarounds and get to know lots plenty of people. Offering to do free gigs can be helpful too. There's some storytelling I had originally offered to do for free for the experience - I've now heard I will be paid for it. I'm sure if you post on here nearer the time some of the Mudcat posters will point you in the right direction to the singarounds in Whitby, fringe ones as well as official, if you haven't already found your way round them. When I found out about all of these singarounds in 2006 I was like a mad thing. In the morning I would go to the Ship Inn and later I would go to some of the singarounds. Hope to see you in Whitby!
