BS: April 18, 1983, Beirut Embassy Bombing

Hard to believe it's been 25 years... and the State Department was going to ignore it completely, of course. My sister made them pay attention, and even got Condi to make a speech...

I am particularly impressed by the Washington Post article. Lebanese TV was there too. All in all, a very nice commemoration. We got to see people we haven't seen either since then, or at least for a long time, even Daddy's college roommate showed up.

Nonetheless... *sigh...*

Was that the attack in which your dad was killed, Mrrzy? Sorry, I remember you mentioning it a long time ago, but I thought it was somewhere else. Good for your sister. It is good you had a ceremony and someone at least paid attention.

All the best,

kat

Thanks for posting this Mrrzy. I doubt very much that the perpetrators of this terrible crime advanced their cause at all. I feel for you as I would for anybody, who had lost their father in such a terrible way.

Was it true that our soldiers were issued empty rifles?

I believe all rifles are issued empty kendall.

The man responsible for planning the attack was killed in Damascus a couple of months back.

Kendall, it is the case that there was no security, and that people had been taken off danger pay and assured that they were safe.

That was the most annoying thing about Condi's speech - she kept saying how they knew the dangers they faced and how proud we should be of them.

Thanks, all.

And it was in his response -- "Heads will roll!" -- that I lost all respect for Ronald Reagan as a leader.

Yeah, I lost it a few weeks earlier, when he declared peace and restaffed the embassy...

And when Bush Sr, then VP, came to the memorial service for the slain, and my grandmother (the mother of the dead foreign service officer) said something to him about attending, he said, and I quote, Aw, shucks, I wouldn't have missed it for the world (big grin). I kid you not.
