Series which finds out what happened to people featured in past BBC documentaries. In 1973 the BBC made a film about Global Village Trucking Co., a rock group living in a Norfolk commune, with the aim be successful without a record label. This programme revisits the original film and finds out what has become of the groups members, and join the band as they reunite for their first gig in 30 years. Anyone remember the Globs? I do - & with great affection - their side on Greasy Truckers Live at Dingwalls is the stuff of legend, and I even saw them once, supporting Gong in 1975. They seemed to be on at every free gig in the Oxford area, mid-70s (I saw them support Gong, too). I still play their LP and that wonderful 'Greasy Truckers' set. A band with true soul. |

Hadn't given them a second thought for years then I followed John McKensie's link from Man's myspace site and there they were, but try as I might, I can't track down my copies of GTLAD or the GVTC album - I did turn up Don Cherry's Homeboy in the search though, likewise Felix Doran's The Last of the Travelling Pipers... Roll on Tuesday! |

Preview from London Night In: There's something not right about old hippies isn't there? Like old pigeons, they're one of life's mysteries: where DO they go to die? Tonight's doc does a good job of answering this by following up a previous 1973 BBC effort on hippie band Global Village Trucking Co. They lived together on a Norfolk commune, made their own music and bread; roamed hairy, free and naked; rebelled against "the man"; and generally did it all their own way with minimal use of deodorant. Now, there are two main pleasures to come from this. The first is the childish glory of revisiting a documentary from 1973, as it feels JUST like a wildlife documentary. Even the sonorous voiceover is now solely reserved for the bit where the lion kills a gazelle. But best is the contrast between the people then and now. Some – such as former manager Jeremy, now CEO of Chrysalis Music – are the definition of "selling out", looking back on it as youthful folly. But most look back with fondness. Some – such as driver George, now a trucker – for understandable reasons.But for others, it's the simple sad knowledge that they'll never feel so alive again, despite what most now see as hackneyed hippie guff. Interestingly, most haven't "sold out". I just don't understand what they are selling. Lead singer Jon Owen makes "musical documentaries" (why? how? who for?). Guitarist Mike uses a 1980s Acorn computer to create holograms for pretty-yet-unknown reasons, while prize for Most Perplexing Job goes to roadie "Kanga", who lives at a school for "intensive esoteric education", where they study reality itself, which must require a lot of notes. Still, at least we now know what happens to old hippies –they do jobs that no one understands. |

Isn't doing more important -or would that not fit with this reviewer's elusively witty play on words. Incidently if he read learned scientific journals instead of watching telly for a living or indeed visited the New York Museum of Holography he would discover Mr Medora at the cutting edge; but then that might be a little sharp for him. still it is fascinating that so there is so much media interest.. I don't understand today's Guardian at all.. could someone have a go at explaining it? Time is a great teacher albeit one that kills its pupils are we not still smiling and revolting? rock on |

Whilst this doesn't appear to be available on CD, its forerunner Greasy Truckers Party (featuring legendary sets from Man, Hawkwind & Brinsley Swarz) has just been reissued in a much expanded triple CD edition. Might they do the same for Dingwalls? One can only hope, although the Gong side was made up of severely edited extracts from the concerts which have now turned up on Live in Sheffield & Live in Bataclan, and the Henry Cow side has been grafted on to the CD release of Concerts, and I believe Camel's God of Light is available elsewhere too. The real treasure though, would be the sessions they recorded for John Peel which I've never heard, and can't find any mention of on-line. Hopefully all will be revealed, but right now, I'm without any Globs music, saving that on Myspace - and I just love the November 2007 video of Look Into Me - so if anyone's put their Globs vinyl (and Peel Sessions?) onto CDR and would like to share it I'd be one very happy little bunny indeed! |

I also contacted James Lascelles (keys & piano) long before the reunion was intended, but to no avail. Now, living in Norway it's out of the question getting signals from British 4 but are there any of you how might have a copy of the programme on video or (even better) dvd?? Nice to hear they got back together Used to play at Ronnie Scotts embarrassing moment when scraped down side of new Merc in Frith Street I was supposed to be guiding Kanga reversing down Frith Street obviously didn`t make a good job of it Oh and forgot to tie down the Leslie in Juji (the bus) that cost a few bob to fix |
