09 May 08 - 09:19 AM (#2336487) Subject: RE: BS: The Gong Show From: Bee-dubya-ell I remember one bit in which a young lady attempting to sing "Whispering" was gonged mercilessly. I have no idea why that particular act stuck with me, particularly since, to the best of my knowledge, I'd never heard the song before. But it did and, years later, when I heard some players at a jam session doing it, I recognized it, learned it, and added it to my own repetoire. I've not become world famous playing it or anything, but it's a fun tune. I would have never learned the tune if it hadn't been for "The Gong Show". I also remember a semi-legitimate act called The Kosher Cowboys who did their song "It's Hard to Eat Kosher on the Road'. I believe it actually became a very minor hit. The chorus, to the best of my memory: Well, it's hard to eat kosher on the road You know I have to bear a heavy load Well I told them down in Macon That I could not eat their bacon It's so hard to eat kosher on the road |

09 May 08 - 05:54 PM (#2336814) Subject: RE: BS: The Gong Show From: GUEST,Arkie Did the Unknown Comic wear a paper bag over his head? A couple of friends who lived for a time in Mountain View, AR were contestants on the Gong Show. That was before I knew them. The guy now with a new partner is a world class oldtime musician. While I am drawing blanks on the acts, I did make an effort to see the show. |

10 May 08 - 12:25 PM (#2337177) Subject: RE: BS: The Gong Show From: GUEST,Jack the Sailor I remember the "Unknown Comic" the best. The bag was a good gimmic. Dave Attell would be a great host. His merciless dry humor and love of the bizarre will do him well. |
