Trying to find lyric or TAB for this song that I first heard in 1972 on a an anthology album called the Blues Project. Contemporary folk/blues artists performing traditional and original acoustic blues tunes.

Try the song "The Cannonball". My favourite recording is by Frank Hutchison, but he may be a bit obscure for most folks. Tom Rush also did a nice job on it.

The words are in the DigiTrad Database (the DT). If you typed in [solid gone] in the search engine in the upper-right hand corner of this page, you could have found them. The brackets [ ] tell it to search for that phrase. Click here if you want to peek at them. They are credited to Bruce Phillips. I would suspect that means U. Utah "Bruce" Phillips. I don't think he wrote the song, and I am surprised he stole from the tradition that way.

Here is the tab the way I sing it, borrowed from Tom Rush.

Many UK singers learned this from Ralph Rinzler.

His version had most of the verses given above, plus

Stood on the platform as her train rolled down the line
Outside I was smiling, inside I was cryin
Cause she's gone, she's solid gone

He ended with
I'll come back in the springtime, back where I belong
If you see me coming you'll hear me sing this song
Sing it now, sing it all day long
Cause she's gone, she's solid gone
(The second last line of this verse uses the same tune as the last line. Makes a lovely resolution to the song.) Ewan

Think the name of that song is She's Gone by Cannon's Jug Stompers and Later By Mark Spoelstra in the Late 60's early 70's.

I am pretty sure that the original of this (and the source for Utah Phillips, Tom Rush and the more modern versions) is the Carter Family's Cannonball Blues. A.P. Cater learned it from Lesley Riddles, black guitar player and, as was the tradition at the time, copywrited it in his own name. Haven't heard the Gus Cannon version but it sounds like a close relative. PETE

I know that Mother Maybelle Carter and her daughters June, Helen, and Anita recorded "The Cannonball" at least three different times between 1949 and 1974. They put a little chorus to the song:

Now I'm here crying cause he's gone,
Wish that I was dying cause he's gone,
He's solid gone.

Of course it is Mother Maybelle doing all that fancy blues guitar work (taught to her by Leslie Riddle) on that original Carter Family recording. John
