Why is it that those that slag off artistes they don't care for feel they must mask their identity? If you really believe JM's no good, have the decency to stand up and be counted. It's not your (entitled) opinion I deplore, merely the cowardice. I can't make the gig personally (playing a gig myself elsewhere, same night) - would have liked to go see the man 'live' for the first time. I would also have liked to support the Colliseum (having played there last year). It's a great venue and needs more support to establish it as a regular folk venue. These are shadowy types who have never bothered to see or listen to Jim Moray (except once, maybe, by accident) yet resent his streams of new ideas about how to present trad music, his musicality and his success. Their "argument" (such as it is) is that musical training, expertise and knowledge have no place in what they call "their f*lk scene". These people were not, btw, being "told" to attend a particular concert, merely asked if they were going. Since they are not (having, doubtless, a prior appointment at some dire singaround) perhaps they could just get on with it quietly and not bore everyone else with fatuous and spiteful reasons why they won't be attending this concert. It's not compulsory. Way back then, they labelled Jim Moray "the new face of f*lk", which I think was a weak attempt to be insulting. Jeez, I know who needs the new face, not to mention something resembling a brain. Whatever happened to being supportive of someone actually working hard to raise the level and public profile of English trad music? |

If you were of a higher calibre you would have probably gone to one of the better conservatoires, (RAM, RCM, Guildhall and these days even Trinity) where the level of student expertise and tuition far outshines Birmingham's "conservatoire" Just my opinion. Take Jon Boden's shameful attempts at composition, for example - even the RSC are blinded by a, sadly, nepotistic scene which spends so much time patting itself on the back it stops listening to the shameful music actually being performed. Aside from an appearance on Mike Harding last night, he's hardly been on the radio/press/tv in the last few years, so hardly overexposed. And when he was everywhere it was because he'd released a genuinely ground-breaking album at the age of 21, and it was a good story. You can hear pretty strong echoes of that album in Rachel Unthanks stuff and the Imagined Village for example - whether you like that sound or not, it did change things a few years back. Aside from that I bet most of you have no idea what he actually does nowadays. For the last few years Jim has been playing with an acoustic trio of melodeon, fiddle and guitar/mandolin playing mostly Morris music. Give the guy a break, he's not being pushed in anyones face and the music he's making now is actually very traditional and mudcat-friendly, if only you'd get over your ridiculous predjudices. |

We saw Jim at the Sage Gateshead the night before, and as he doesn't play up North that often, we decided at the last minute to go to the Coliseum to catch him once more. Lovely venue, and we had a great excuse to fit in fish and chips beforehand too ;) Jim was as fantastic as ever. It was a very contrasting set; the first half was solo and very much what we're used to hearing from Jim in the past; some beautifully moving piano pieces, acoustic guitar, melodian etc. The second half was amazing and completely different, incorporating keyboard, xylophone, electronic, drums, electric guitar ... the sound was fantastic. It was so different I'm sure I saw the "older generation" squirming in their seats unsure what to make of it. All I can say is it was fantastic and well worth seeing. Our only disappointment was that Jamie, on violin, hadn't made it (looking at MySpace, seems he was at another festival!) We first stumbled on Jim when a friend had tickets last year but couldn't make it, so we went along save them going to waste. Since then we've been hooked. Bearing in mind we're not Folky in the traditional sense (more indie, pop, rock), I think Jim is the kind of musician that can generate new fans, people who would never have ever considered listening to Folk music, like us. So well done Jim. Really look forward to seeing you again, hopefully soon. Can't wait for the new album in July. Rich |
