Its the Hat

From: olddude

For years I have never been able to figure out how the country music folks can be so darn good on the guitar. I mean, is it in the country air, the water, the beer ... what the heck. As John Sebastain said
"every one can pick a darn site better than I will" - Tonight I figured it out. It is the cowboy hat. I never had a cowboy hat. I do have a Crocodile Dundee hat with the gator teeth that I used to keep the bugs off my bald spot while fly fishing but that is the nearest thing I ever had to a cowboy hat. Therefore since the secret has been revealed to me
what brands make great guitar players?

OK. If it's the hat what did/does it, that explains why I am a mediocre quitarist. All's I ever had was a coon skin hat.

I do have the boots, but they are fake snake skin. I could never get close enough to a snake to "skin em"

Wear an old coon skin hat and they'll come to you, olddude.

I admit to being lousy and also admit to a disdain for simpleass cowboy hats. On the other hand, so to speak, I used to enjoy having my hat blown occasionally but that never made me want to do any pickin'.......some grinnin' but no pickin'.

This is the main hat that I've been wearing for the past 5 years or so. I also partner with it to select my fantasy team every week. "Da' Hat" fares almost as well as the pros in Vegas.

But first and foremost..........

The REAL thing....The One and Only Hat, his own self, and plunderer of Little Hawk's brain waves

olddude,

The only good cowboy hat is a Stetson...all others are imitations.

Lin, who wears her hat often and still can't play guitar--but looks really cool while listening to those who do

I haven't told Lin that even Stetsons are now imitations. For at least 15 years or so, they've been made in Taiwan.

Although I don't play guitar, my original and genuine Stetson is still holding up acceptably, and I intend to continue wearing it until it begins to look shabby, or until I can find an adequate replacement. (It's only about 24 years old.) I've had a couple of newer ones, including one of the "new Stetsons." They didn't last long.

That's it then it is a Stetson !
I got my Marlboro's, got my snake skin (imitation boots)
even have my old Martin. I still play bad ... so maybe with the hat just maybe - things will sound better

No wonder you never got laid, Spaw! Doncha know how the girls will swoon for a guy in a cowboy hat? Git yerself a gen-yew-wine Stetson, no matter what JohninKs says, and, as tall as you are, the wimmin will follow you. You'll be that "tall drinka water" they always write about it novels!

"I mean, is it in the country air, the water, the beer ... what the heck."

olddude, I have just viewed Roger McGuinn's 'Guide to Home Recording on a Computer.' I believe that the reason country singers' guitars sound so good is that someone has doubled the tracks, added reverb, removed errors, etc.

In other words, they sound good because they're fake. Get a hat if you wish, but don't quit playing because you don't sound like the celebrities.

And McGuinn never wears a hat as his bobblehead problem precludes keeping the damn things on. Gossip has it that what little brains he had were just recently thought to be shaken loose entirely rendering his dumbass null and void...........

well sadly my song writing is not what it use to be, my guitar is as bad as it always was and I know where the fingers use to go but they just don't want to listen to me anymore. That is what happens when you pick up the thing, strum it and put it back in the case for a long time. Getting serious again is frustrating. But it is 1 AM and I am still at it - even without a good hat.

There is a song that Wylie and the Wild West http://www.wylieww.com/
do called All hat and no cattle
here is a song by the same name by Trace Adkins

I do not know if it is the same song.

I don't know about playing better, but Lin is right. The right hat can make you look cool listening. As a matter of fact, a good had can add a touch of dignity to what would otherwise be a rather trashy affair.

It must be a happy coincidence that our folk sessions are held at a venue called "The Mad Hatters". Following Uncle Phil's observation about adding a touch of dignity I have my eye on a nice piece of headware complete with jingly bells. What would be the most useful key to have them tuned to?

I am also trying to learn banjo. But remembering the movie Deliverance, I don't think it is a hat that makes a great banjo player :-)

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that all bassists in the folk orbit wear hats in the summer. The type of hat is immaterial.

"That is what happens when you pick up the thing, strum it and put it back in the case for a long time."

That's your problem, olddude, putting it back in the case. Put your guitar out in the open where you can see it and pick it up whenever the fancy strikes you. Take little music breaks during the day, and play for half an hour in the evening.

Just don't put the guitar in sunlight or near a heat vent. You can hang a hat on the top of the guitar stand if you wish.

I own a couple of western hats - a Stetson and an old Resistol, both US made. I also own Wrangler jeans and two pairs of boots, one of which I got while still in high school, over 50 years ago. I wear this gear, on occasion, because I still like to ride horses and I was raised on a ranch in central California where we actually herded cattle. However, I never, ever wore western attire while singing.

The late actor, Slim Pickens, was raised near my home area. I saw him around rodeos as a young boy and teenager. He said there were "hat people" and there were many others who looked ridiculous wearing them. He felt lucky to be a "hat person." I never got the connection with Nashville and the cowboy hat anyway. I think it was a marketing gimmick that got out of control. George Strait is a Texan and it might make more sense for him. I don't remember reading of any historic "cowboys" in Tennessee, Alabama or Georgia however. Truth to tell, most of their "country" music actually has its historic roots in Ireland and Scotland.

I don't know, but whatever brand you get, make sure the sides are curled up. That way you can fit three in a pickup.

Thanks for the link to the Tilleys. I see that they have round holes in the side so you can stick a pencil up there. Or maybe a tin whistle.

(I don't see how putting the guitar right to hand would involve giving up the hat. In a rational world, both are possible.)

CarolC: long ago, I was driving out to western Kansas with my husband and another engineer. It was a cold Sunday morning, and we saw a pickup coming toward us with three males (prob. one man and two boys) in it wearing huge cowboy hats. It looked like three enormous butterflies were flapping their wings in the cab. The engineer, who was a native to the area, said that they are pronounced 'k'BOY hats, not COWboy hats.' Apparently he was not much impressed by TV-derived culture.

Bailey, Resistol and I just got a nice shantung Wrangler ( made in Texas ) for hot weather and fishing. I expect my guitar playing to pick up considerably any time now.

I've figured out your problem, olddude. Like you said, it's the hat, but with a Crocodile Dundee hat (almost certainly a fake Akubra rather than a fake Stetson) you should have been trying to play fake Oz country and western. Of course, for real Oz country music you should give up Stetsons (real or fake) and get yourself a proper hat; nothing but a real Akubra will do. You can roll the sides up if you want, or you can even pin the front brim to the crown and imitate Chad Morgan, the Sheik from Scrubby Creek who really launched Queensland Opera (the cool name for Oz country music) to its present heights.

All the best!

Cheers, Rowan

Get a tea cosy and get into reggae? Or a tight knitted hat and try hip-hop? You could get a boater and do 20s music. Lots of different possibilities.
