Oh, gee whiz. I am glad I don't have any of that on the bathroom vanity.

Hmmm... I must make sure the Preparation H is a long way from the toothpaste.

I don't use Lectric Shave. It gunks up my shaver. I do gargle with Listerine, however (original "flavor," not the citris flavored stuff). If I do, I find that I spend far less time clearing my throat when I start vocal exercises. It probably does "kill the germs that cause bad breath" okay, but until it dissipates, it leaves your breath smelling like tractor exhaust. Scope may leave you smelling prettier, but it's a lousy gargle and doesn't work anywhere near as well.

I understand that before going on stage, Caruso used to gargle with a shot of good whiskey. Then he's swallow it, sing a high C, and he was ready to go.

Also, you want to keep the Ben Gay away from the Preparation H. I know a guy who got the two mixed up and took off like a rocket! And loud? Wow!

When I was 11, I learned the difference between Pepsodent and Brylcreme....and I was NOT combing my hair.

Bill's post reminded me of a boarding school gag which entailed squeezing Brylcream into someone's toothpaste tube and watching his reaction in the morning and trying not to laugh too hard at his facial contortions so as to not give yourself away as the perp.

Some years ago I wondered where my hairspray (which I seldom use which is why I hadn't noticed its disappearance) had gone.....after questioning Himself it transpired that he had thought it was underarm deodorant and had used it all up.

He had wondered why his underarm hairs were a bit stiff.....

Not exactly a "ptui" situation, but: my college roommate had been trying an experimental treatment for hemerhoids...chapstick. (Don't blame me; it wasn't my idea, and I didn't even know until later.) The kid from across the hall was bumming around in our room, picked up the chapstick,(as if that wasn't a little crass anyhow)and used it on his lips. I had no idea why my roommate was laughing so hard until he explained later.

Sounds like an urban legend, that last one. . .

Don, my dentist advised against using the mouthwash with alcohol (most of them have it). He said it dries your mouth and can cause gum damage after a while. I was using a mouthwash to soak my orthodontia retainers between cleanings, and after switching to one of the non-alcohol (and more expensive, naturally) ones my mouth felt better.

Anyone know of a good gargle to loosen up the old vocal cords (and in my case that's too true)?

OOPS. Wasn't meaning to disagree with Don. Should have said "any other gargles that don't contain alcohol".

Milk? Warm milk? And, drink a wee bit too (I prefer skim milk for drinking). The muscles need the calcium to be able to respond to flexing. It's all about the negative and positive charges in the sarcoplasmic reticulum and the mitochondria. If I drink a glass of skim milk twenty minutes before playin Hran, I can do much better for longer... I assume this would be the same for guitar... and, why not for singing, as well?

As for a gargle, I just "think" that milk with some fat content would help grease the skids.... no... ??? Just a thought.

I once got up bleary eyed and shaved one armpit, thinking that my Norelco was the Mennon stick deodorant.

Aslo, if you confuse your Listerine with mosquito repellent you will find that it works better at keeping the bugs off than OFF or that skinsosoft stuff. Rednecks down this way are swearing by it and they know their mosquitos.

Milk? Bad choice. An ear, nose and throad doctor who works a lot with singers told me that milk and milk products are mucus forming, and you might wind up singing in Phlegmish!

Hmm. I'll reassess the Listerine gargle thing, Maggie. It seems to work pretty well, but if it can do long-term damage. . . .

Which is to say, milk and milk products are fine, but not a good idea soon before singing.

"A mixture of apple cider vinegar and honey does wonders.."

Pardon me for asking, Amos. There are two, not three ingredients in that (as in you didn't omit a comma)?

I use a non-alky mouthwash that also prevents dry mouth. Can't remember off hand what it's called, but I'll check when I get home. It's a tad pricey, though.

What about plain old warm water and salt?

Website is here.

For you, Gnu, they also make veterinary products.

I dunno; I just copied the stuff on the bottle. Sounds like milk to me.

But it does work for dry mouth, and the toothpaste does help as well.

Funny--- Brylcreem and Colgate also look a lot alike. The former,
however, will send your toothbrush skidding out of control. I was
about 9 when I discovered that...my Dad thought it was funny and
wrote a jingle about it.

You can also put Lectric shave on instead of hair stickum if you're tired enough in the morning. This necessitates another shampoo.
