I've just done a forum search, and there seems to be a dearth of discussion about this talented artist. Seven or eight years ago, you couldn't go to an open mic and not hear some Kate Wolf song. Now, I hardly ever hear her work. There are only four of her songs in the DT. I suspect there has been some Kate Wolf overkill as well. Some people have heard "Give Yourself to Love" one too many times at song circles. Does every new female singer feel required to sing "The Trumpet Vine"? As I have said elsewhere, I think Kate wrote some songs that will endure. Others, like "Shining" are mostly romantic fluff. From: Mudjack I was so very fortunate to catch Kate in concert, she was just finishing a long tour and appeared to be tired and later we found she had her second bout with leukemia. She asked Utah Phillips to come out of retirement to finish her tour on the west coast. It was the same tour she taped her Austin City Limits appearance. I'm here to tell all that her performance was a most memorable concert and I'll cherish the memories for the rest of my life. Anyone who has had the special priviledge to see her in concert will miss her even though she left a legacy of songs. I felt like she was a magnet pulling her audience in and intimately singing her songs with personal conviction. Mj |

Also, Eyes of a Painter, and Like a River. I have one tape of about 10 songs from a friend, and some of the songs are definitely forgettable, but the ones that work, *really* work. Roger--as a neophyte songwriter, I'm trying to figure out what makes powerful, memorable, and accessible songs. I don't particularly care about getting rich, what I want is to know that people will be singing the songs I wrote a hundred years from now. Your comment on this thread indicates to me that you have given some consideration to what makes an effective song, so I'd like to know what your criteria are. Just discovered her this year, though, and am very happy to have done so. I've learned "Two-Way Waltz," and "Telluride Sawmill," "Cornflower Blue," "Lilac Bush and the Apple Tree," and "Give Yourself to Love." I'm singing "Give Yourself to Love" and "Two-Way Waltz" in March at my son's wedding, with his Dad and step-mom. (Sorry, Rog, but they're lovely and fit the occasion. besides, the kids haven't heard her to death yet, so it'll be new to this next generation as well.) Her keys are my keys and I can play most of the chords she liked (the Bm is a bit of a stretch for my guitar-playing talents, but I learned F#m and C# so I could do "Two-Way Waltz," so I'm certain I'll master the Bm as well.) I bought the songbook from the website and have enjoyed it hugely. ww |

When he finally came home from the hospital, he was quite fussy, what with the oxygen, heart monitor and all. (My daughter, Annie, was living with us at that time). When he was otherwise inconsolable, putting on a Kate Wolf tape calmed him EVERY SINGLE TIME! Never failed. Didn't matter which tape, or which song. It was amazing. Something about that woman's voice and music reaches many people's heartstrings, mine included. Worked for my grandson, and it works for me. No one has mentioned Carolina Pines, Cryin' Shame, or Muddy Roads, a few of my favorites. Poet's Heart, IMHO, stands as one of those "stranded on an island" must have albums. Devon is now five, and recovered quite nicely. Built like a halfback, he now goes to pre-school with my daughter, (his aunt), who is a few months younger than him. I don't think he recognizes the Kate Wolf songs, as he's generally too busy trying to find a screwdriver or something. But he's being raised in a very musical home, so I predict the circle will come around again. Sorry to ramble so, this is a dear subject to me. How do we know as we're writing a song when it sucks and when it sings? As a non-performer, I can only say I just gravitate to some songs easier than others. Is it the tune or words or the combination of both? There are many good songwriters/performers I love,but can't think of anyone that I like every song they've done. Joni, Jackson Browne,Dylan and Kate wolf-I like most of their stuff but not everything. Funny how certain songs seem to touch more people than others. Kate's Two Way Waltz is an example. |

She made even the shallow songs sound wonderful. "An Unfinished Life" has to be one of the most stunning songs I've EVER heard. Only Jo Stafford's voice grabbed me the way Kate's did. From: John Hardly It was Tony Rice's guitar and Kate Wolf's songs, especially "These Times We're Living In"(bad grammar and all), that got me back into "folk" music in a big way. I'm still waiting for a tribute cd that makes sense. Gerber worked with her for so long and should know better than I, but the tribute cd she produced was short on performers with a history of knowing KW, and therefore embarrasingly short on meaningful tribute tales to share in the liner notes. Gorka and Williams were the highlight of the cd and had almost no connection. Conspicuous by absence were those who shared recording credits with her (like Tony Rice). JH |
