From: The Fooles Troupe Yahoo Chat has a live sound 'voice chat' facility, somewhere in it, but I haven't tried it for a quite a while. I also find that the last versions that work with Win9x & Fedora somewhat lacking, and have tried playing with Trillian, etc. |

Second Life has far better sound quality, but it takes patience to figure it all out. Free version works fine. SL music is usually done in a "concert" format (shows are usually an hour) rather than "open mic" format. Another huge feature of SL is the ability to "jam" in real time with others using the voice chat feature. People also "chain" performances from one to the next allowing a mix of several musicians o be recorded. |

For one year I did pay to maintain the Pop-Up free status, then resumed free service. I don't get pop-ups, which may be due to the pop-up prevention in Norton. I like the open mike format of PalTalk. From: reggie miles PT has constantly upgraded but I've never found their system adequate for my particular connection to the web and I have DSL. While some seemed to sound wonderfully via this site, others, like me, were never been able to manage to get the combination of software settings and hardware tools together to really shine in that environment. I think that's PT's weak point. It's not functional enough for everyone to use with reasonably adequate results for all. You'd get booted offline often and the sound of some who were trying to share their music was poor no matter what combination of port settings were used. It would have been great to have a place where anyone with minimal hardware and software tools and connection speeds could have been able to both access the rooms and also be able to sound good and be heard well by others too. But, I guess that dream is somewhere ahead yet. Or perhaps it just hasn't been seized by the scene because no one can figure out how to make a profit from it yet. It was during one of my visits to PT, now years ago, that someone pointed me in the direction of Skype. He told me that the clarity was positively the best and he was right. The problem that I had was staying connected. The connection would die on me after about one minute. I don't know what kind of advances they may have made since then or if things got costly as a result of their popularity. SL was a huge piece of software to load onto my system and like PT very tenacious when I wanted to try to get rid of it. I wasn't a fan of the fantasy environment that SL offered. I wanted to share my music. I just wasn't so keen on having to develop an entire cyber alterego to do it. What bothered me most is that I couldn't use my owmn name. I had to use one of their cyber alternates. Once I got in I was offered $250 cyber dollars. I sometimes wonder what's become of my cyber cash and persona. I imagine that with the popularity of role playing games, those who enjoy them will be long be visiting SL. As for me, I've got plenty to do in this life. One interesting aside to SL is that someone locally is running an open stage at a local bar and cyber casting the event via SL. I'm not sure how all of that works but I thought that I'd check it out. I wonder if I'll have to resurrect my SL cyber alter being in order to participate or if the host of the open mic simply creates a new one for me. You need to go to Adult/music/livemusic, and you're likely to see perhaps seven or eight rooms, only one or two of which will have any significant population. The largest room may be 20 to 35 people, and some of them will have only one or two people. I haven't been very active for quite some time, but recently have resumed stopping in for an hour or two, maybe for a night or two in a week, and then perhaps not for another week or so. But in the most active rooms there's quite a continuing population, some of whom are very good, and of course some indifferent, and then a bunch of pure lurkers. I was lucky I could even talk my wife into getting the basic (slowest) DSL connection. Although now that she is using DSL for her farming business, she sees the advantages of a faster connection. Maybe I will revive my PT account and try it again. It certainly seemed easier to use for live playing than SL...but I will also keep trying with SL too. Reg, does Skype still exist? DW, what stage area do you use when you stream your gigs on SL? Have you ever tried selling an mp3 recording of your music dw on SL? ~Jeff |
