Using Mudcat's blickifier page, put the URL in the upper of the two windows as usual and then the short text in the lower of the two windows; the short text need be only one word (eg "here") if you like. Create the link as instructed then copy&paste the entire product into your post. Use the "Preview" button (next to the "Submit Message" button) to view what it will look like when posted; then post it. Cheers, Rowan |

27 May 08 - 02:48 AM (#2349857) Subject: RE: Tech: Highlighting a very long link From: JohnInKansas The "clickie" text doesn't have to be the same as the "url." For a link to this thread, using the full form; <a href="http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=111530&messages=4">Highlighting</a> a very long link would give only the word "Highlighting" as the clickie, and the rest in plain text. e.g. (for example only) Highlighting a very long link. It really shouldn't matter if the "clickie" wraps a line though, since clicking "anywhere in the blue" will follow the link. John |

Wherever you put that marker (</a>) is where the highlighting ends. Since the clickie is for use by the reader, and you don't know whether it will wrap in the reader's browser - even if it does in your own, it's not something to worry a lot about, unless you have some particular reason for doing so. If at all possible, make a clickable link if the URL is any longer than 20 characters. But if you can't make a clickable link, paste the entire URL in place, and there's a good chance one of our trusty volunteers will turn it into a link. If I want to post a link to a search in the Roud Index, I'll end up with an URL that's very long, so I sometimes abbreviate it by just giving the main address of the Website, like this: The Library of Congress American Memory Collection can be just as bad, so I put this: |
