Obama senses it and is making the hard choices so that he might get US into a better position down the road... He claims that Rev. Wright led him to Jesus. Just which Jesus was that? The one who looked upon the conditions of heart as truth of the man? Or some other Jesus who would jockey for political position and re-define his ethic to fit the occasion? The question still remains in my mind of "what did he know and when did he know it?" For 20 years he listened to hateful rhetoric from that pulpit but his disassociation from it came only after it came to public light in the midst of a campaign for the presidency. You could argue that at least he came to it and for that I would agree. Better late than never. Bobert, who defines what it means to a person to be black? Is that the responsibility of the DNC? The "Left" in general? You know, those that have to tell some one how downtrodden they are by some OTHER group, not them? When Mr. Obama came to the mainland he sought out this church, in part, to explain to him the black experience here in the contiguous 48 was. Was Trinity Methodist the only point of view in town? |

I think there are plenty of parishes and community groups organized along religious lines that are much more voluntary than their main organizations. Buddhism as it is practiced in some countries strikes me as another example where the authoritarian or dogmatic aspect of organized "religion" is less salient. Likewise the silent meeting days of some Friends is quite undogmatic. But the thing to notice is that the part that is religious in actuality is not the part that is organized, and the part that is organized is never the genuinely religious part of any such scene, IMHO. The understanding that religion and one';s own connection with the human spirit and the infinite, whatever that connection involves, is purely a private and personal experience, is what lies behind the brilliant and revolutionary doctrine of the separation of church and state introduced by Jefferson and his gang. I don't think we need to we-invent that wheel--we just need to educate the troglodytes who haven't figured out why some things roll better than others! A |
