01 Jun 08 - 12:22 AM (#2354130) Subject: RE: BS: Phillipines earthquake 6.4 From: M.Ted There are big earthquakes all the time, Alice--there was an even more powerful quake than this yesterday in the Indian Ocean, and one pretty close to this strength near Iceland on Friday--mercifully, most of the earth is still thinly populated, so that only a very few of them have catastrophic effects on humanity-- |

02 Jun 08 - 09:25 PM (#2355761) Subject: RE: BS: Phillipines earthquake 6.4 From: Janie I have wondered recently whether we are in a period greater seimic activity around the globe, or if the combination of greater world population and the ease of global communications is resulting in more earthquakes being widely reported. Too lazy to do the research to find out. Thanks for the link, Alice. Janie |

02 Jun 08 - 11:23 PM (#2355835) Subject: RE: BS: Phillipines earthquake 6.4 From: M.Ted There is a relatively new global seismological reporting system, with sensing stations all over the place. If you are so inclined, you can access all kinds of info through the USGS site linked above. Interested parties may elect email notifications of global seismic activity, though you have to keep on top of it, or it fills your mailbox up pretty quickly (or so I hear;-)-- There are definitely periods of greater and lesser activity(like over the past few months), but even on a slow day, there are always a couple good quakes. Vanuatu alone usually has at least a couple quakes every day--and the fishing is great there too! |
